Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

I was perusing the latest issue of The Beijinger when I stumbled upon a readable artice about the Super Bar Street Market.

It's actually classified as a "secondhand electronics market", but from the article it seems there's a lot more there.

I like crazy second-hand shops where you can buy weird old stuff.

Has anyone been there? Is it cool?

I'm thinking of heading over there this afternoon.

Any stories/opinions from people in the know would be appreciated.

Thank you.

And thank you, That's Beijing, for being a part of my morning bowel evacuation.

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

We had lunch last week at BiteAPita and went to the market just very briefly... but saw enough to want to go back. So make an afternoon of it, there are loads of places to get some food, then walk around the market too.
Did not have the feel of the silk market, much more interesting variety of stuff and more friendly too. But we didn't see loads (had to get the kids home for their nap!)

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

been there a few times,

I think the 1st floor is still all furniture;
the market is all on the 2nd floor:

a lot of it is musical instruments and recording/audio equip.

there's a big rowdy second-hand cell phone market at one end

some clothes,
some DVDs, CDs (including originals from the West), Records,

some other old house stuff like antiques....

worth a trip..

What China really needs:
- Bill Nye, "the Science Guy", to come teach them basic Science.
- Jared Diamond, Dan Brown, and Spencer Wells to teach them about world/human history.
- MLK and Gandhi and Einstein to teach them about what being human means.

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

according to a chinese friend a lot of the computers and phones etc are allegedly stolen, just in case you care

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

was around there today (looking for 'huge fiive-floor second hand electricals market' allegedly in area, which I completely failed to find). It is indeed a remarkable market - particularly noticed quite a few interesting 'antique' electrical goods (some especially fine looking old cameras, if that's your thing) in amongst newer models in the stalls. mad mix of stuff, displayed in an engagingly interesting range of ways (I for one have never seen a glass display case full of angle grinders before). and stall holders pleasingly blase about people looking at their stuff (don't know if it's a common experience, but I've had stallholders attempt to physically drag me to their counter in other markets).

so yes: I'll be back and I'd definitely recommend.

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

worth mentioning that game consoles can also be bought here.

And worth mentioning BiteAPita again, just cause I like it.

Actually that IS my thing, when I'm in the mood, thanks for mentioning it. Although if I were to buy something, I'd need to ship it home someday. Hmm. I'd better not go. Sad

I don't know much about cameras...but these were beautiful. I'm planning to go back and get one to keep on my desk whether it works or not.

...I'm guessing you're the kind of person who can resist anything but temptation, freakqi?

That last line is cute... yeah when it comes to some things, especially chocolate.

If the cameras were beautiful, they were probably expensive. Sad

In the words of David Dickenson, "a great conversation piece"

I picked one up a few years back for about 70 RMB, bought the film (f***in expensive) and found out the internal spools were bust. No pictures.

The leather case alone was worth 70RMB.

Nevertheless, pictures or no pictures, a pretty thing it is.

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

I should have asked about the prices of the cameras - sadly me and gf were in a low cash monthly cycle - so we were just looking... and really - I don't know how much antique cameras go for - but they were displayed so casually that I can't believe they would be overpriced wildly.

there was a forum post a while back about old BBC and ITV equipment that had ended up here at a market just outside BJ - I have a friend who's a film director who suggested that the equipment was worth picking up.

all I need to do is wait 10 years and the bashed up laptop i need will be mine...

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

went to this market today. Awesome.

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

Since admin just referred someone to this thread from another thread, I'm wondering: Has this market moved now that the area's been demolished?

Re: Super Bar Street Market. Worth going?

Yep, the whole thing is gone.

But there is a van outside what used to be that street, directing people (in English) to the market that now houses a lot of the previous streets stall holders.

Went there a few days ago. Basically same thing, same prices. Just smaller.
