doesn't Goose and Duck have a pie menu? Maybe not in the new place, but they definitely did at the old one a while back. Their take-away menu doesnt have any.
I, on the other hand, get a freshly baked steak and ale pie cooked for sole consumption on a regular basis, and a chicken and veg pie also.
good pastry... tasty fillings but still nothing like a real meat pie..
not like the ones you have at the footy on the weekends that come in cellophane bags... and you stick the nozzle of the tomato sauce bottle under the pastry and squeeze... random meat parts ground up and swimming in brown "gravy" yum!
all i wanted for my birthday was a meat pie...was able to still get them from kiwi pie...but the shop is actually closed now. one of the girls who used to work there got a job in the shop next door, and was nice enough to sell us some of the stock in the fridge.
the pies were the closest i've eaten in beijing to a good ol' aussie meat pie...perhaps if we can generate enough interest, they can open again
their website is still working....www.mykiwipie.com
I found one in some Swiss Bakery Grams in the carrefour in Wangjing.Only 3 kind Beef,Curry chicken and another chicken i forgot what.
Is not like at home but have a good taste
There's a coffee shop in Tianjin run by a couple of Aussies that's starting to make them, if you're really desperate. I don't think they're quite ready yet, though.
This is probably some kind of sacriledge, but they have them at Pacific Coffee... I've never eaten one, but they seem to get ordered a lot.
Yes Pacific do have Pies. Not your real pie - and they nuke them so the pastry is a bit blah. They also do a humungous sausage roll which is also nuked, but its bearable with a a lavish dose of tomato sauce.
You might want to give the Russian restaurant White Nights ( in Dongzhimen) a try.
It does a quite good "meat pie" - looks a bit like a pasty. but close your eyes and cover it with sauce and you are almost there. Without the gravy of course. They also do a potato pie filled with mash in the same format.
Hey, I have a chinese friend who has just opened a tiny pie place in a hutong just north of nan luo gu xiang.
The pies are like a cross between a pasty and a pie. The pastry is damn good and they have a selection of different pies (from pork to beef) and even a seafood pie. It's the closest thing I've had to a real traditional meat pie in Beijing. AND they're only 3 RMB per pie.
The address is Bao Chao Hutong, no 86. So, if you come out the north end of nan luo gu xiang, head west and the entrance to Bao Chao Hutong is on the north side. His shop is a little hole in the wall - basically just a window - on the right hand side. No English. But my friend speaks some English so can direct you to the pie of your preference!
I've just been to that pie place in Baochao Hutong but there was no sign of anyone there. Actually, as soon as read your thread this morning, I decided to go there to have a couple of tasty pies for lunch and when I got there, there was no-one serving. It looked like the ovens were on and I had a quick peek round the back but nada.
I had to go to Lido for a bit and I decided to go back and give it another go, but once again, nada.
Good way to do business.
Anyway, if you have the opening times that would be great, so next time, I won't be disappointed. Twice.
My friend says he is there all afternoon. I will contact him about more specific times, and ask if it is ok to put his phone number up here - that way if the ovens are on but it appears noone is home, u can text him and he can come hand over a pie!
I was in Paddy O'Shea's Irish pub yesterday, and I saw a few meat pie/brodie looking things in a warm case thing on the bar..
well, I can't say any more,
...but they were there...

What China really needs:
- Bill Nye, "the Science Guy", to come teach them basic Science.
- Jared Diamond, Dan Brown, and Spencer Wells to teach them about world/human history.
- MLK and Gandhi and Einstein to teach them about what being human means.
OK, so my friend who has the pie shop near nan luo gu xiang is called Wesker, phone number13311393973. If you go to the shop and noone's at the window, text him or call him and he'll come get you a pie out of the oven. NB. they're not exactly your average steak and kidney pie, but they're a pretty good alternative.
Had a friend proposing to open an outlet for pies in China a couple of years ago. I thought the locals wouldn't like it enough and didn't go forward with the project.

It is not viable if you're only relying on some foreigners to purchase your pie, as sales volume need to be quite high for the return to be worthwhile. I haven't seen much to pursuade me that the Chinese people would take a good fancy to the pie. You do realise there's been a break of about a year before the thread was revived?

Re: Meat Pie in Beijing?
Yeah, please do. I'd kill my own mother for a decent steak n kidney pie, or a flaky sausage roll.
Even a service station Ginster's would do. God, I can't wait to get home and rape Greggs.

Don't lie!
G n D pies are horrible. Too dry, no gravy or blood inside.
First thing I'll do when I get back is get a steak n stilton pasty in King's Cross station before heading back up north. Maybe 2 or 3.
You tried the Square Pie Company pies in Spitalfield's? Best pies ever. Mash, gravy and mushy peas.
I'm off to book a flight.

There is a shop inside the Lido that sells meat pies.
No steak and kidney, but a decent steak and ale. Tried a variety of the others and the quality seems pretty solid.

Sequoia Cafe does a decent pasty. I'm a Canuck, but they were recommended by a British friend and seem to sell out. 12 rmb, beef or chicken.
