Dongjiao Market - huge market, sells everything
I finally went to Dong Jiao Market... and wow, they sell everything!
It is known for the kitchen/hotel/restaurant wholesale items, but
they have sooo much more. You need a few hours to see it all, and I
do not suggest bringing children, although older teenagers who love
discovering great finds at markets would have a blast. Patience is a
must as it is soooo huuuge!
Also, the stall owners did not approach me or bother me at all, the
no-smoking inside seemed to be taken seriously. It is absolutely not
a tourist market, although expect some bargaining.

朝阳区西大望路甲12号
Chaoyang Qu Xi Da Wang Lu Jia 12 Hao
ChaoYang District
Near Guomao
It is just of the 4th ring road, where you turn right to go to GuoMao - sorry, not good directions I know.
You can see a review here

I think most drivers will know it.
It is HUGE HUGE HUGE, sections I managed to see a bit of are below,
... each section has it's own huge building (or section within the building) or outdoor area, and you can walk from one building to the other very easily. It is actually well
organised. There is also a section with cooked foods, so you can
easily have a snack or eat lunch.
Kitchen supplies - huge sinks, huge rice cookers, funky looking
coffee machines, great dishes (white in a variety of nice shapes and
some stalls with creative coloured dishes that were beautiful),
forks, spoons, chopsticks, etc... glasses, cooking utensils, meat
cutters (like what you see in a deli!), anything a restaurant or hotel kitchen would need...
Bags - suitcases, purses, other
Home Stuff - bins, buckets, mops, containers for the
bathroom/kitchen, cleaning brushes, etc...
Office supplies - pens, desk lights for home or office,
Decorations - christmas, chinese, beaded hanging things for doorways, other
Fabric - sheets, fabric, towels, floor mats, car carpets, car seat
covers, etc... didn't look closely
Clothing - didn't look, but saw some kids, mens, womens
Shoes - lots and lots of shoes in the back of one building, but I
didn't look closely.
Chinese Tea - didn't look at this section
Fish - didn't look
Fruit and Vegetables - didn't look
Flower market - apparently further down there is a section with
flowers, but I didn't even get close enough to see it!
And there were whole other sections I didn't even see from the
outside...
Anyway, if you like markets, and seeing that everything really is
made in China, then you'll have fun here.

True true true. Can't stress that enough ad still barely anybody knows Dongjiao. I just got a fully functioning chocolate fountain from there which helped a friend's childhood dream come true for only 300 RMB.
Visitors love it a lot, too, and it's a great place for taking "real China pictures" for them.
Most taxi drivers understand "dongjiao pifa shichang".
Oh and crj, you missed the buidling materials section which sells everything from paint to doors and loos and marble and 5 meter high stone lions.

Interesting. Now that I live near Dawanglu, I think I may just have time to visit this. Thanks for sharing.

Sad news - half of Dongjiao market has been torn down to make space for what will surely be another luxury apartment-shopping-hotel complex.
Only the food section is affected so far but seen the strategic location near Dawang Lu, I'm afraid the rest won't last long either.

Re: Dongjiao Market - huge market, sells everything
I visited this yesterday - it is indeed an experience (or at least the half that's left of it). Kitchen supplies are great - I toyed with the idea of getting a chef's uniform before settling for a couple of hot pot burners and pots (90 RMB the pair) - you could happily fit out an entire kitchen with gadgets, cutlery, crockery etc. for bobbins. staff don't hassle you; very chilled.
one thing was: for such a huge place it was oddly hard to find - for some reason i was expecting a huge 10 storey building, rather than an enormous series of stalls with a few 1-2 level halls. if you're not coming by taxi, you need to walk south down Xidawang lu from Dawanglu station. the entrance is on your left, less than 5 mins walk, just before you get to the coach station. it looks like a moderately-bigger-than-average market street until you've walked up it a bit...

ditto to what Merv said... had a dinner at home on sunday so needed to stock up on wine glasses plus other thingys.. no hassle or whatsoever and the prices were quite decent.. no hard bargaining required.

Re: Dongjiao Market - huge market, sells everything
there was huge tea section as well - row upon row of small shops....I was going to have a go, but I'm not too sure of the protocols of tea shops, and was a little worried about suddenly being expected to pay thousands of RMB for a sachet of brown leaves....
am I just too cautious, forum? am I? am I?

This is a fantastic market in Beijing, something I would highly recommend at least visiting.
If you somehow cannot find what you're looking for here, perhaps you may want to buy directly from an official US online retailer of your favorite brands.
Most online retailers do not deliver to China nor accept RMB payments, so Dong-Xi.com is here to help.
