Service at Foreign Restaurants
Do you ever detect that the Chinese staff at some of the foreigner restaurants have HUGE attitudes? In the past week I've had dreadful experiences at Mexican Wave and TGIFriday's. Despite my best attempts to be friendly, it seemed as though the wait staff wanted to kill me. Why does the attitude exist?

You are an epitome of obese American. Try to eat healthy for god's sake.

Yeah I've noticed this at a certain Subway. When it first opened it was staffed by a bunch of really friendly guys, but they're no longer there and the service has really declined. One time the girl even dropped my sub onto the floor - fortunately (or unfortunately) it was already wrapped up so I didn't ask them to make me a new one. And another time I showed up 40 minutes prior to closing, and they had already put away all of the ingredients and were only willing to make me a salad. If they wanted to close up early, I have no problem with that - but then why keep the doors open?

And in answer to the OP's question, I guess the people working at those foreign restaurants deal with foreigners everyday and have gotten sick of them (us) for whatever reason. Whereas the clientele at other foreign restaurants such as McDonald's, KFC, and Pizza Hut is mostly Chinese and the workers there have not yet developed these attitudes.

Yes.
The reason they treat you poorly is you're a disgusting fatbody.

nope.
haven't really noticed.
Thats a management problem specific to each restaurant.
There is a subway near my office, staff there have always been lovely.

Re: Service at Foreign Restaurants
People really have to have some sort of incentive to be polite when working at that kind of job, I think.
In general, the pay sucks and they are not treated well. They are not getting tips. They probably don't even get to eat the restaurant's food.
I don't like bad service either, but relaistically, what can we expect in these conditions? I am not sure the Chinese workers at Westerns restaurants are treated much better than those at Chinese restaruants.

The best service I've found at Western restaurants in Beijing is at Annie's (for professionalism) and at Tim's Texas BBQ (for friendliness).
I just don't want people to give me the evil eye for wanting to eat! It's a business after all.
