How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
Thanks for sharing this valuable information, autumn_sun!
Just did the trip to Erlian to get the exit stamp, here's a quick braindump.1) Getting there: there are daily sleeper buses. Several from a bus station that is on the south 3rd ring rd. There is also a bus from a station near north 3rd ring road and Deshengmen Wai avenue. That bus leaves daily around 4:30, and the owner can be reached for reservation 8783 0592. All buses cost 180yuan and take about 12 hours. Going there, the bus was late (because of some snow halfway), so we departed Beijing around 7:15 and arrived in Erlian at 6:15.
There are also trains as discussed.2) On arrival. Erlian is a small and not very useful city, but it has ample facilities to make the wait for the return bus bearable. Taxis around town cost 5yuan, taxis to the border cost 10 yuan. There are several internet bars in the vicinity (with your back to the train station, turn left, then right at the first intersection, i saw at least 3 internet bars on that street). The Pacific hotel has what seems to be the only public Western-style toilet in town. There is a "dinosaur" museum which I didn't have time to check. There are two buses - route #1 goes to bus and train stations, and also almost to the border. Bus #2 goes to the dinosaur museum. For those who find themselves really attached to the place, hotels can be had for 50 per night (or cheaper for crappy ones). There is a market with the usual beads and such about 2 blocks away from the bus station. Nothing special there, except perhaps stuffed birds.
3) The border crossing. The guards at both Chinese and Mongolian side are quite adamant that you cannot cross on foot. There are jeeps that will take you to Mongolia and back for 40-50 yuan each way. Or if you are a cheap bastard like me, you can try to swing it for free. I hitched a ride through the first gate to the Chinese border (about 200 meters) then once i got my exit stamp, I tried to go right back through the other door. Unfortunately, someone with big stars on his epaulets had nothing to do so he checked my passport for mongolian stamp and sent me to Mongolia. I think this can be worth a try because on my second visit (with a stamp from Mongolia) the bored guy was not there, and the regular people in the booth didn't even look at anything except the visa. Moving on, hitch another ride (perhaps on a truck) through the second gate, walk about half-way to the Mongolian border. Lines here are bigger but people don't mind foreigners queuing Chinese-style (jumping to the front of everyone). At both borders, there are at least some people who speak English and/or Russian. Get out, go through the hole in the fence, and come back. Duty-free prices are comparable to Beijing retail. Hitch another ride to China, there are trucks and buses going through. On the chinese side, you can just walk out of the building and walk the 200 meters to the border gate. There is a money collection going on as you enter the arrival hall, but I didn't pay nor was asked to. Arrival forms are available.
Overall, quite a painless experience. I was at the border at around 8:40 and was back in China at about 10:20, keeping in mind that I argued every step of the way and waited to hitch a ride, so your crossing will probably be faster. Also I just needed an exit stamp and not a new visa.
I heard that the border is open from 8:30 in the morning until 6pm, but no official info to corroborate.
China Mobile signal is available all the way to Mongolia.4) Getting back.
There are some trains, but very few and far in between. I made a photo of the train schedule if anyone is interested. The only daily train is at 8am to Jining. There are sleeper buses departing at 2:30, 3, 3:30 and 4pm, also 180rmb. I took the 2:30 one and was in Beijing about 12 hours later - there was a lhuge traffic jam and we took some weird detour. These buses go to the far-away station to the south 3rd ring rd.Summary.
Time: bus to bus, about 31 hours, door-to-door about 34 hours.
Money: round trip bus 360, 2 taxis in Erlian 20, total 380 not counting food.
Impression: Not the most comfortable way to travel, but quite bearable. And considering a trip to anywhere else would be about 2000 or more, quite cheap.

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
Some nationalities don't need visas for Mongolia so if you just need an exit stamp it is much cheaper to make the trip to Mongolia than extending your visa with that company. The trip is quite painless and the people are quite nice in Nei Mongul even at the border the police were nice and helpful.

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
I am tempted to go there again. It was nice to breathe fresh air, too. Speaking a little Chinese at the border and the police were so friendly. If you can't get a train ticket there are sleeper buses and regular buses that leave from the bus station at Liuliqiao bus station. At that time there wasn't a direct bus to Erlian hot so we went to Hoh hot and spent one night and then continued on the next morning. If memory serves me correctly there was a bus to Er lian not the evening we had gotten there. We opted to spend the night in Hoh hot.

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
Yes end of September is close to October holiday madness, so I'm figuring less madness going the Mongolia route than the Luohu one.
Since mine expires October 2, tickets south possibly tight (especially since I'll probably purchase them last minute)due to holiday.
Ideally I'd leave closer to my expiration date, but then again, leaving a few days earlier would bypass the holiday hordes.
Or hoping that by then some magical visa service will appear offering F 6 months for around 3000 rmb!!! Multiple entry?

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
There are not going to let you out with an expired visa - you need to get a new exit visa. It's not that difficult, but they do take it seriously and depending on how long it has been expired for might get you in a little bit more difficulties than you were hoping for: an expired visa = illegal immigrant, and that is anywhere in the world!
The fine is 500 RMB a day with a maximum of 5000. Go to the main PSB / Visa place at Andingmen to get it fixed. Do it now!

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
Here's come information that I can ascertain from those grainy photos:
It seems like the K3 Beijing-Moscow or the K23 Beijing-Ulan Bator will both due. From what I can make out, the K3 only leaves once per week on Wednesday morning. I can't make out when the K23 leaves.
Does anybody have any information on the days that return trains operate from UB-Beijing?

Thanks to autumn_sun, coeurdelion and jeff for all this valuable information !
I need to exit China so that I can stay another 4 months in China. But I'm French so I have to ask for a visa for Mongolia, right ? I should leave on Wednesday but don't think I'll get my visa for Mongolia on time.
I thought about taking the Beijing-HK train but that takes forever...
Are there any other options to getting an exit stamp ??
Any advice will be highly appretiated ! thanks !

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
you can get an express visa to mongolia within two days. you can apply for it on monday and get it on tuesday. you need two passport size photos.. and the embassy is only opened from 9-11 so be sure you are there at 9 cuz there is quite a long queue sometimes.

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
Neonstar10, thanks so much for your quick reply and your advice.
I'll go to the Embassy first thing tomorrow morning!
I've printed the application form and have 3 more questions :
- Should I get an "entry & exit" visa or a "transit" visa ?
- What should I specify in the "purpose of stay" part and the "address & phone during your stay" part ?
- What about the invitation letter ? Do I really need one ? if so, where can I have it done ?
Thanks again for your help !

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
Does anyone have any recent experience with this? I'm wondering if it's different in winter. Also, an up-to-date the phone number for the bus reservation?... no one picked up.
I'm thinking of going next Monday, on Feb. 9th... let me know if you need to go then too.
Disappointed
Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
No difference between Summer and Winter!
Same buses, same procedure.....now, after Chinese Holidays, the traffic will increase....but everything normal!

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
I went to the Mongolian Embassy today at 9am sharp and here's some useful info for the application form :
- Request a "single entry & exit" visa ("transit" visas are only for passing through Mongolia and going to Russia)
- For "purpose of stay", specify "travel"
- For "duration of stay", write 1-2 days
- For "reference details", as long as you don't leave it blank, that's all that matters. I had no idea where I was going to stay and don't know anybody there so I just made up a hotel name and apparently that was enough !
- I didn't need to provide a letter of invitation
- They only ask for 1 photo and a copy of your passport
This visa costs 495rmb (express fee - 1 day - I'll pick it up tomorrow afternoon). Normal fee is 270rmb (5 working days).
The Embassy gives you a pink slip attached to a white slip and tells you to go to the nearby Bank of China to pay for your visa (they will charge 10 kuai for that -- there's no other way to pay anyways). After paying, keep the white slip to prove you paid for your visa when you pick it up.
As for transportation, I'm leaving on Wednesday on the 7:45am train from Beijing Zhan and should arrive in Erlian around midnight. I got a hard sleeper (low bed) for 148rmb.
I'll let you guys know how things went at the border on my way back !

right about the "prices" not being accurate. Seoul is about 640 PLUS 1200-1300 taxes and chargers and...
Total about 2100 or $300 US.

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
I did this back in September '08. Took the evening sleeper bus (called the # in coeurdelion's message) at 5:30p, got into Erlian at 4:30pm. The sleeper bus is cold at night but provides thick blankets. A little smelly. Stop at midnight a large crowded canteen. In the morning it was quite cold but you can take one of the pick up tricks waiting for travelers to take you to a hotel lobby (still cold), or there's a surprisingly very nice and semi-western cafe (opens at 7a?) near the town square where people are doing calisthenics. You can get a bite to eat there. If American, do not need visa to get into Mongolia. If not, there is a mongolian consulate in Erlian where you can go, though i do not know how quickly they will process it. Then took a cab to border where found an SUV loaded with people to cross. When I went, the computers were down so waited in there for 5 hours to cross. I took the 4:30p bus back, getting back to BJ around 5am. It stops in two places, so make sure you ask the driver which are the stops. Not fun, but did the job.

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
I've done it twice, and I don't recommend it. Even though cheaper you have to suffer the indignity of being at the mercy of monkeys, this includes getting the visa from the mongol embassy and then the trip itself.
Embassy... one outside window, no forms available, people line up to get forms, some push up to window to get them, some line up for long time. Everyone is confused. Finally get to window "you need copy of passport". No mention of copy on board. You work out some how that copies can be made inside and you get one. She's told you to come back Monday but there's still an hour to go, so you line up again. They close early. So you come back Monday for the sake of 1 photo copy. They take your passport anyway and 500 CNY, WHY NOT MAKE THEIR OWN F'ING COPY INSIDE THE OFFICE!! She mumble to you blah blah 4 o'clock. What she meant was come back today at 4 o'clock. It was never made clear that mine was 1 day processing. I did query about the price but she said just for chinese. That isn't the whole story. I made 3 trips and had to go the opposite end of town from where I would like to be at that time. (I know US don't need it, and others).
Upon arrival at about 3am you can get a bed for 20 CNY (plus lift 10), don't bother with a hotel, stay where the mongols stay. Those places are near the center of town, shared dorm maybe but it's just a few hours. Try and communicate to the driver you want that, shui jiao, pianyi...
There's an area in town where all the mongol border cross vehicles start from, and your accom. house will know what you want. It all just kind of works out that you get into a car for 80, perhaps with someones fat wife on your lap (twice), but don't expect to be taken up and back. This time I had 3 different drivers!
It's painful but if you do it somehow it all just works out.
I don't recommend it.
Approaching and leaving the town there are dinosaurs on display because near this town real dinosaurs have been excavated. Dinosaurs are this town's claim to fame, kind of like what bananas are to Coff's Harbor (aussies only), you get the drift...

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
Another Beijing - Erlian trip report here
Finding the jeep to cross the border is a tricky - apparently the jeeps meet daily 9am in front of a random convenience store near the 蒙古酒吧 (Meng Gu Jiu Ba - "Mongolian Bar"). Or perhaps you could just hop on a jeep at the border like someone else suggested. You defintely need to be able to converse in Chinese to make this trip - and note that lots of people there (Mongolians) don't even speak Chinese, or English.

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
I just did this trip a week or so ago. It all went well except for a few minor problems. First, not many of the drivers that go to Mongolia can speak Chinese. A Chinese man found me, he could also speak Mongolian, he helped me set up a ride to the other side. I ended up in a Russian type land cruiser, with a driver and bunch of really really nice Mongolians guys. We got to know eachother pretty well as we sat on eachother's laps for a bumpy ride. They could speak English, but the driver could not. They helped me, when we dropped them off at a hotel on the Mongolian side, they made sure the driver knew to take me back to the border, and help me catch a ride with someone crossing. He did, thankfully, and he did it for free. If you cannot do it like this, when you get out of the Mongolian exit to China side, go to the right and flag someone down on the road. If they can fit you they will take you, if they can't fit you, they'll still probably take you. They will know what you want whether they can speak Chinese/English or not. I paid fifty rmb each way. I know this is more than others, but it seemed like a fair price to me, and they did help me more than they had to.
You cannot just go through the Chinese side and re-enter, or at least you are not supposed to. I don't know if it would be possible. If you are that far, to the building for entry-extit, you've already paid for your ride, it only takes another 10 minutes to the Mongolian town, might as well just go, I wouldn't mess with people that could deny me entrance, or postpone my entrance into a country anyway. By the way, I had to pay my driver up front, but he was honest, no problems.
The Mongolian side of the border is very poor and nothing in Chinese, or English, seems like an unlikely place to find enjoyment, I was gone in 1/2 an hour. However, everyone I met was from Ulan Batur, that sounds like a neat place. Modern, safe, fun, but a little more expensive than China
Erlian is nice, at least I like it. Population 60,000, it reminded me of my hometown so I may be biased. It too is a poor place, every resident (maybe 5) I talked to really hated it, felt trapped is the impression I got. But, the people were really nice. And, having spent my time in Beijing it was kind of neat to be somewhere with a different personality. The people in Erlian were more than helpful, helping me find places/ directions etc. just friendly in general.
Lodging: I stayed at the motel on the right (100meters or so) when you get out of the train station, it is on the opposite side of the street. It was clean nice and comfortable. One night 100rmb. There are less epensive ones on the left, but they are dirty, you don't get a key to your room, I was worried someone could take my stuff, the floor seeped water, the toilet had no seat, the TV didn't work etc. I opted for the one on the right. Take a look around the rooms before you get one.
Trains: I took a train on saturday morning, got to Erlian that evening, the next train left the Monday at 12:50AM Hard slepper 145rmb or so each way. It is cheaper than the bus.
Visa: I'm American, so I don't need a visa for Mongolia, only a passport with a page free for the stamps. Americans, you don't have to prepare anything just fill out the card they give you at the border, and have your passport. There is no application process.
All in all, I wish I had more time in Erlian, get to know people and see what it's like. Ok trip though.

Re: How to get your visa exit stamp in Mongolia
Also, the train leaves form Beijing Zhan, not Xi Zhan and you can buy a ticket at the station.
