local registrations database

I just had an interesting experience that in my opinion confirms that the rumors of a national database to keep track of all foreigners and their local registrations is true...

I have a friend who has used my phone number for some things since he cannot speak Chinese... he just took a trip to HK for a few days. I just today got a call from his local PSB station. They wanted to know if he still lives at his address used on his registration. I said yes. They then asked why has he not registered since his last entry record. I said he is traveling and I don't think he is back in town, then I asked when is the entry record they have for him? They said- April 25- TWO days ago!!! He has not even made it home yet, he is traveling with friends and they are trying to find him since he missed the register within 24 hrs window! Ha!

Holy sh*t! They've got a database? If they've cracked Windows we're all f*cked!!

Re: local registrations database

i came back from thailand three weeks ago, didn't go to the police for registration so far.
Should i do that ?

Re: local registrations database

They do enter it into a computer when you register

It's just whether they can be f***ed checking it up

Re: local registrations database

I had a friend from back home visiting last week so like the upstanding foreigner that i am (!) I took her to the police station to register. No problems , 3 or 4 min job.

Then I told them I would be down to HK for two days and asked if i need to go in and tell them when i was back.. just got a smile and told it was not necessary.

This was the police station by the east third ring, just on the other side to jing guang da sha, any one else been told the same thing there?

Re: local registrations database

I think even the police don't really know what the rules are since they are changed so often and seemingly on a whim. The police woman who processed my registration a few months ago told me that it wasn't necessary to come back until my visa expired and I got a new one. However, I think I'll just do it anyway. Such a waste of time....

Cheers,

I checked with my local PSB and was told the same thing. I only need to register when I get a new residence permit or passport, not when I re-enter the country.

Hi @ all,

my experience with the police ? well, my visa is already expired some weeks and I travelled to many cities, stayed at hotels...

last week I was at the police office, dealing with a case of stolen things ( I reported to the police last year )

I wasn t at a small police office, I was a beijing headquarter.

They asked me of current address.... I just told them the truth....no address right now, living here and there.

They also found out, my visa expired...I told them, I am sorry for this take car of this next days..

I was wondering why they do not care about, I know other foreigners where pushed...

after talking to my girlfriend 's parents..I got the answer....connection.

Today I got a Z Visa 3 years..... heureka..

maybe not fair...but i am very very happy

of course they've got a new database. They bought it from Sun for $1.8 million to run their 2G ID card program and also control expats.

You do not have to register every time you exit and enter the country on a multi-entry visa. Just when you register for residence here.

Re: local registrations database

@OP when he initially registered and they asked him for a contact number, he might have given yours if he doesn't speak Chinese.
