Bookworm gone bad??!

For those of us that have been in Beijing long enough, there are some places you consistently go because you know you'll have a great experience. Bars like the Rickshaw and the new Saddle consistently provides good food and friendly service (even when they mess up an order). Nanjie has some of the most efficient bartenders in Beijing. The Vineyard is also great and their staff members often go out of their way to make sure customers are happy. Up until recently, I included the Bookworm on that "always a sure thing" list. After all, the place is a Beijing institution. It has a great atmosphere, decent menu, and cool events happening all the time. However, even with all the goods it has going, the staff members there have become such a turn-off that its ruined the whole place for me. In a very recent experience there, the staff and service was so appalling it made the worst beijing taxi drivers look good.

First I asked the waitress to help me plug in my power cord, to which she responded with a huffy "do it yourself". In almost every other place with Wifi, I've had staff help bring me a connector or plug in my cord when I couldn't find the power plug. It's not strange or difficult request. If the crappy service ended there, I would have let it go but it only got worse...

After getting my sandwich order, I looked to find that all but one of the ingredients in it wrong. They also added eggplant in the sandwich, to replace it with something they didn't have, when it wasn't suppose to even be in there. Well I just happen to be highly allergic to eggplant! What really angered me though was that at no point in the 30 minutes between my placing the order and getting the sandwich, did a staff member come to tell me that the sandwich may not be exactly what I ordered. So when I opened my sandwich to discover eggplant, I asked the waitress to correct my order. She came back in 2 seconds with the missing stuff (but cold stuff when my sandwich is suppose to be warm) AND left the eggplant in there. When I told her about my allergy, she was just like... mei ban fa. No apologies, no offer of the menu for something else.

Its really sad that such a great place like the Bookworm has gotten so comfortable with itself, it stopped caring about its customers. As a place of business, is it ever ok for just assume that people will go there so you can just treat your customers like crap? I can't imagine any other restaurant, bar or cafe that would let their staff members get away with behaviour like that- not even the small, hole-in-the-wall restaurants. Even with all the things I like about the Bookworm, it has definitely become the last place I'd go in Beijing.

Just FYI, after leaving the Bookworm after that experience, I went to a different cafe. Within 10 minutes, a staff member helped me find a power plug and I got the exact sandwich I ordered.

Re: Bookworm gone bad??!

from what i've heard, the bookworm has never been known great food or service ... but it doesn't bother me because it's still a great place ... for books.

Re: Bookworm gone bad??!

who ever went to the bookworm for the food/service? its just a place for rookie laowais who want to show off their new PBs and look for "language partners", isnt it?

拉皮条不容易!

Re: Bookworm gone bad??!

The food is alright. The service use to be ok too. I think they just got really pretentious, like...deal with it since we're the only place with books sort of attitude. Places like the Passby Bar have a growing book collection now so the Bookworm is not the only place to go for books anymore. Beijing changes every day and with all businesses here, if its a good idea, its going to be copied. If you can't keep up, eventually something will replace you.

Chris: Meg, you are so full of crap. You're like those people who sit in Starbucks and publicly write on their laptops. (Scene with two guys typing on their laptops in Starbucks.)
Guy #2: Hey, getting some writing done there buddy?
Guy #1: Yeah, setting up in public so everybody can watch me type my big screenplay.
Guy #2: Me too. All real writers need to be seen writing otherwise what's the point, right?
Guy #1: You should totally write that down!
Guy #2: Okay, will you watch me?

There's a Starbucks about 100 yards down the street from the front gate of the Sony Pictures (Columbia/TriStar) lot in Culver City, on the west side of Los Angeles. The place is literally packed with every wannabe douchebag screenwriter in the city, all of them feverishly writing the "next great film" on their Powerbooks.

Truly a pathetic sight.

Re: Bookworm gone bad??!

yes yes yes! I knew there were fellow revolutionists out there! This waitress has obviously decided to take a stand against you and your anti-social laptopping!

it is time to take up arms!!

Re: Bookworm gone bad??!

I was just in the bookworm today and was washing my hands after using the bathroom when the person who had just finished in the stall came out and walked past without stopping to wash his hands. Didn't think much of it at first (this is China after all) until I followed the fellow back into the side room where he turned right and went back into the kitchen (presumably to continue preparing meals). This probably happens all over China, but I expected better from a western owned restaurant where they should know better! Be warned!

Re: Bookworm gone bad??!

Concerning books only.. this place is better than ever.
Maybe not in Dinning Out section.

Re: Bookworm gone bad??!

I used to like the Bookworm, even up to a year ago, but I agree things have gone downhill. While the food has never been a draw I think it actually got worse. The staff are not the most helpful certainly and not really interested in doing their job. My final rant is that the last time I went there, on Tuesday, the place was very hot with only their two fans to try and cool it down.

Enough said!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Palestine...Oh Israel...!!!????

One Word: Poppy Laughing

I got nothing remotely intelligent or witty to say.

Re: Bookworm gone bad??!

I always hoped it would have a more snooty vibe.

Yes, the "Look at me! I can afford a laptop AND a latte!" types are sad little publicity whores...
