Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

Given the recent upheaval and turmoil in the whole visa process, many folks are considering getting more legal. For those who have the option of getting sponsored as an employee by a local company and such, OR those who will now get hired by small to mid-sized companies as expats, you may find yourselves in the predicament of having to walk through the entire Work Visa process yourself. Having joined a local start-up as a consultant, and then as an employee, I had the distinct “pleasure” of going through the process this past year and now seems a good time to share what I know and put together a step by step manual. Please be advised that everything is subject to change here so contact the relevant authorities to confirm. This will be a guideline of sorts, and based [on the newest info I have as of April 2008, it seems to still be accurate.

All the real work is done by the employer.

The reason people do not want to go through the process is because they can't go through the process.

Your welcome. I prefer the real thing.

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

Great post.

I have to go to HK next week. My employer gave me the invitation letter(which says the HK visa office) for a Z visa and also the working permit issued by the state administration of foreign expert affairs.

I asked my employer several times could I definitely get it done in HK and they said yes, that they also double-checked.

It seems that I have everything in order.

Does anyone have any idea why some people were being turned away in HK?

Also, do I need to bring a health certificate to HK too?

The HK Visa Office does have a notice up on their Website stating that they will only attend to those with HK ID cards, but they are allowing anybody with the proper paperwork to apply for Z visas.

However, a lot depends on what passport you hold. Those from Nigeria, the Philippines, Indonesia and other poorer countries will be refused in HK.

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

Thanks for that gdbill.

So is there any point in calling the HK visa office or is it all a matter of which person or which cubicle I go to in the visa office on the day?

I'm Irish b.t.w

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

Good to know, thanks Catfish & gdbill.

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

According to posts in different forums they still do Z Visas, for UK and german citizens in HK, even if the invitation letter says they have to do this in their home country.

But I strongly recommend to do some phone calls before you get stuck in Hong Kong.

e.g. call Sunrise and Forever Bridge Trading. They still deal with Z Visas

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

Not that someone gets me wrong, I am talking about legal Z visas meaning you have done all the paper work before.

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

Cheers Catfish,

I just had a look at a few other forums too. It seems that it's possible to get the Z with all the necessary documents in HK.

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

@ C
When you have your Z-Visa let us know. Good luck.

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

I just got my Z-visa approved.
My school will send me to HK next week.
If it wouldnt be possible to get my Z-visa in HK, then the school would have been informed?

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

chubbylaowai, what is your nationality?

So it sounds like some folks are having success getting Z visas in HK with legitimate paperwork, etc. What about student visas? Are they issuing X or F visas to *students* with legitimate paperwork from a major university? (I know that businesspeople seeking F visas have been reporting major problems, but I haven't seen a lot of info about students...)

With money and right connections you can get Z here inside the country if you want it badly enough. 想办法吧!在中国没有没有办法的事!只是你没想到办法而已!In China nothing is impossible, you just have not yet figured out the way to do it! Figure it out is my motto...........

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

can anyone supply the relevant information for the Beijing offices of the various government offices to visit? Do they carry the same names in Beijing as they do in ShangHai?

I'm British. There have been a few posts about Z visa applications in Hong Kong. I think the consensus is that legitimate paperwork results in no problems although I'm not sure if that applies to passport holders of the 33 countries on the banned list...

Many of those onthat list have never been able to get Z visas in HK for years now. As far back as 6 years I'd see Filipinos at the HK Visa office who were told they could only get visas back in Manila.

Can you post a link for that website please?

Thank you

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

i've got a job from another school, legally this time. They are applying for my Z visa but i have to go back Italy. It'll be ready in a month or so, or, in the worst case, around August 15th.

Problem solved for me.

After September i'll work and live in Yanjiao. I think I wouldn't go to Beijing anymore. That city became too crazy, expensive, controlled... it's no more like 5 years ago. I am sorry, but BJ is out to me.. However, I am glad i can return to China soon.

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

Let us know when you get your residence permit. Where is Yanjiao?

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

The school is sending me to Hong Kong tomorrow to get my Z-visa. Will tell how it went.

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

As with so many I'm also in the visa twilight zone. My biggest concern is that if something we're to go wrong I can't afford to get stuck in HK. I would literally be on skid row in about a week or so. I will have the required paperwork in order for a Z visa but after many years in China I've learned that common sense isn't so common here and you should always try to anticipate the unexpected. For this reason I'm thinking of trying my luck in Vietnam. At least if the worst happens I can still afford to buy myself a beer and there seems to be good teaching opportunities at decent pay, unlike Thailand. Has anybody heard anything about visa issues in Vietnam?

Seriously, I would still try to do this in HK - 1st, they are just more used to the procedure, 2nd, if anything is missing, I guess you can Fedex it quicker there then to Vietnam!

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

Hi, I'm on a working Visa Z here in China and my residence permit VISA is about to expire soon on June 30, 2008. The University that I've been working for started processing the renewal of my working visa/resedence permit since last week. I'm from the Philippines and what kinda confuse me is do I still need to go back to my country to get a Z Visa, based on the info that I've been checking my country is included on the list of countries wherein citizens need to go back to their country to apply for a VISA? Is this only applicable for L and F Visa? How about the Z VISA/residence permit renewal, do I still need to go back to Philippines just to renew my Zvisa/residence permit? Thanks.

This forum is really informative. More power ^-^

Usually you do not.

How many threads will you post the same question on?

in Hebei Province, the big university area 30 km north east of Beijing. Anyway,, i have been told by the school and the chinese embassy in Italy (i phoned them) that i can not get my Z visa until August 25th

Re: Getting a Z Visa and a residence permit

yes, i am tired of China me too. Suddenly they messed up everything. It's no longer like before, and honestly speaking, instead of making things easier, they make even more complicated. If i can get my Z visa i'll return here and work until july 2009, then, i'll go to Vietnam.
