XinJiang Food

What's your favorite XinJiang restaurant and what dishes would you recommend? I'm a chuanr addict so I'm hoping the rest of the cuisine is just as yummy.

Cheers,

Re: XinJiang Food

Red Rose, close to Alfa and the one I do not know the name of, it is at the entrance of Superbar Street....

Re: XinJiang Food

agreed.
Its a great place....but consequently its always packed, and of course it happens to be out in BLCU.

There is a great one near my place, I'll try and find out the name and come back.

XINJIANG CRESCENT MOON UIGUR MUSLIM RESTAURANT
16 DONSI LIUTIAO - DONG CHENG

Everything!!

The Chuarn is huge, Chicken wings are the best....and you gotta try the noodle dish, with cucumber and lamb - rockin!

Re: XinJiang Food

Dunno the name, but there's a great place on Chunxiu lu, opposite the Red House. No frills, just great food, and the chuan'rs are wicked.

Go north at the crossroads on Gongti Xilu and it's about 200m down there on the left.

Re: XinJiang Food

Did you ask this question some where already, dear V?

Re: XinJiang Food

Are香辣土豆丝 and 大盘鸡 Xinjiang dishes?

Re: XinJiang Food

Xinjiang Red Rose is one of the worst restaurant I have ever been to. Loud tacky dancing and music, loud tacky decor, below average food, and below everage service.

I have not had Xinjiang food over half a year, and my favorite one closed down. But, my favorite dish is shou zhuan fan.

There is a shady Xinjiang restaurant in Nanluoguxiang. I don't know the name, and I have only been once, but the food was great.

Re: XinJiang Food

Red Rose IS tacky but the dapaiji is really good. Lots and lots of juicy chicken.

The best latiaozi I have ever had is this small place on dahuisi lu, near the ethnic minorities University. I kind of regret moving from that street.

They used to do great kao baozi but stopped serving them. Anyone know where to get good kao baozi?

Shou zhua fan IS good done properly. Perhaps nothing to write home about but that's what xinjiang food is like. It's not gourmet cuisine but somehow you find yourself going back four or five nights a week...

I had a dish at my local cheap-and-cheerful recently which I think was called shucai kao mianbao - that's probably wrong. I know it was "shucai" something or other although it basically comprised fried bread and onions. Damn if you wanted to have a night of beer drinking and something salty to get a thirst going then that would be a winner.

I also love the kao yangtui - barbecued sheep leg. I think it's the thigh... Everywhere seems to do this well enough. It's a good chunk of sweet, sweet close-to-the-bone meat. I don't know why it's purple in colour but I don't ask.

There is a fancy-looking xinjiang place on that road that heads north from the workers stadium north gate. It's about 40% more expensive than other places but not worth it as far as I can tell.

Re: XinJiang Food

personally, I'd avoid all Xinjiang restaurants with English names (and table dancing).

one of the best and most authentic places for Xinjiang food in BJ is the Urumqi Banshichu, located southwest of Xizhimen Qiao. my mate was married to a Xinjiang woman and she insisted that the Urumqi Banshichu was loads better than the Xinjiang Banshichu (located in the same part of town).

The Urumqi Banshichu is located in a narrow hutong but the area was under development last time I was there so it might be easier to find these days.

Re: XinJiang Food

best place I have been is Ma Hua La Mian 马华拉面, (mind you not the much more common Ma Lan La Mian 马兰拉面)

they are mainly a la mian 拉面 place, but they got lots of awesome XinJiang stuff

- chao mian pian 抄面片
- chuanr 串
- la tiaozi 拉条子
- the bread with soupy stuff on it
- the mutton leg thing

also got nice gai fan 盖饭 (i know, not really XinJiang-ish, but whatever)

there are a few around:
one is within (perhaps drunken) stumbling distance of SanLiTun,
- on BaiJiaZhuang Lu 百家庄路,
between South SanLiTun Street and the 3rd Ring Road
(right near No. 80 Junior High School)
on the south side of the street
- another one is nearby at a street parallel to ChaoYang Lu, on its south side, between DaDongQiao and the 3rd Ring Road
- and another is near the UBC(?) Movie theatre place near SiTongQiao, on the NW 3rd Ring Road

I;ve been there a few times,
I think I've had better for less money,
but still not bad,

that thing (the big pic making this thread window huge) does not look like XinJiang food
I think it's from SiChuan?

Rule #1: the bigger th Xinjiang restaurant, the worse the food is.

Rule #2: the smaller the lamb chunks on the kebab, the more delicious they are.

Any roadside kebab with tiny chunks of meat on their skewers for 1 kuai are far more delicious and tender than the big 5-kuai-a-shot jobs at places like Red Rose and Afanti.

I don't think I've asked this before. Is there a better forum to ask? So far, the answers seem pretty awesome. Think I'll try one of the places tonight.

Thanks everyone!

You'd better go to Xinjiang at least once to taste the real fresh xinjiang food! They are definitely not the same as here in beijing!

Re: XinJiang Food

I love XinJiang food - it's my favorite kind of Chinese food.

Here's what I like:

Shou Zhua Fan - hand tossed rice with some mild spices and raisins occasionally.

Da Pan Ji - As the name suggests, it's a big plate of Chicken mixed with giant chunks of potato, carrot, and other veggies. It's sauteed in some kind of tomato sauce and a large noodle is placed under the chicken. It's really large, and includes large pieces of both meat and veggies.

Nang Bao Rou - I've sometimes heard this called "Muslim Pizza". It's comprised of a large Kao Nang (the pizza-shaped flat bread) topped with green bell peppers, potatoes, assorted veggies, and pork ribs.

Ding Ding Chao Mian - This is the closest thing in China I've had to spaghetti O's themselves. Inch-long pieces of noodle mixed with a few veggies. Has almost a mild Italian flavor, relatively speaking.

-----

Generally speaking, admin is correct that the larger the restaurant, the worse the food/service. Smaller, more local XinJiang restaurants are where you're going to find the best stuff.

Ah, you're right. I'd forgotten about that. You're right. Smile

Now I just need to dig out that old message and add it to the suggestions here and I've got a lot of homework to do for a few weeks. Smile

pork ribs in muslim food? I'm sure you mean good ole yangrou, dont you?

I dont know if its been mentioned yet or not, a good alternative to chao mianpian is ban mian: thick, pulled noodles in a tomato sauce with veggies and beef/yangrou.

Re: XinJiang Food

There's a fantastic small Xinjiang restaurant off one of the hutongs on Chaoyangmen bei xiao jie, its appeal diminished slightly when our beloved 'thatsbj' magazine nominated it as there 'find of the month' or some such award a couple of years ago and a stream of laowai developed an irritating habit of occuping the best tables.

Neverthless their yang rou chuan is far and away the best I've ever had (5 kuai for one but when you see it first-hand it you'll understand why), the other dishes pack a punch too and the atmosphere is great.

Not a speck of dirt in sight either which can't be said for too many hu tong restaurants.

Re: XinJiang Food

That restaurant near Chaoyangmen is good. I have been meaning to go there again.
