Beijing duck places

Okay, I'm looking for a good restaurant (for tonight) that serves Beijing duck. It's for a visitor. Now, I happen to think BJ duck is pretty over-rated, and I'll be ordering something else, so the restaurant has to serve other things as well. Don't want to go to Liqun. Dadong and Made In China are both booked out. I live in Guomao and don't want to travel too far. Any ideas?

Re: Beijing duck places

xiao wangfu

Re: Beijing duck places

I like Xiao Wang Fu, but for duck: Quan Ju De

Re: Beijing duck places

That's two votes for Xiao Wangfu - good enough for me! Cheers

Re: Beijing duck places

Xiang Man Lou

Re: Beijing duck places

Ya Wang is slightly better than Quan Ju De in my opinion.

拉皮条不容易!

wow, you are an expert. I used to live near that restaurant, which is indeed a great one that has delicious peking duck!

Quan Ju De sucks and it's overprised!!!

Re: Beijing duck places

speaking of overpriced, Da Dong is now 198 per duck plus more money for the fixins (bings, sauce, scallions, etc).

Da Dong's good but that's pushing it on the price, in my opinion

ps not sure what they're feeding the staff in the Tuanjiehu location -- never seen such a collection of plumped-up waitresses

Re: Beijing duck places

Wow, that's a bit pricey.

Re: Beijing duck places

If you've got a fat wallet, there is a pretty good duck place inside the Grand Hyatt in Oriental Plaza too. I can't remember the name, but it's on the 2nd floor if you walk up the staircase in the lobby. They've also got a fairly well stocked wine cellar.

Cheers,

Re: Beijing duck places

There's a good duck restaurant at the hidden city in Sanlitun. Ambiance is nice and the price is almost the same as Da Dong. The name is Duck De Chine

The kind of person who likes REALLY good BJ duck and who has a company expense account. I'd rank the quality right up there with DaDong, but it is crazy expensive and very convenient if you're staying at the GH.

Re: Beijing duck places

Re: Beijing duck places

Heard a lot about Xiang Man Lou, so I went there yesterday. The original price for the duck was 98 but now they have tags over the prices, changing it to 128.
The duck was very good, but I didn't like the place. It's very simple, the furniture is old, dirty and beaten, not really what I was expecting, specially after being to the other ones. My guests didn't speak any chinese and i couldn't get them any waiter who speaks english to explain things out.

Also, the rest of the menu didn't really catch my attention. Nothing really special and a lil pricey.

So, for all these, I'd still rather paying the extra 60 bucks for the duck in other places like Quanjude and having all the 'glamour' they offer, specially if you have guests coming to Beijing

Re: Beijing duck places

I've tried a couple of places, Xiang Man Lou, Quan Ju De, Da Dong, Liqun..

Here're my thoughts on each:

Xiang Man Lou: Didn't impress me, only saving grace was the 98RMB price tag, which seems to have gone up in price to 128RMB, further discouraging me from going again. Duck was unflavorful and the environment resembled a typical noisy chinese restaurant with bad service. Only go there if on a budget.

Quan Ju De: Has branches all over the city with differing standards of duck and service at each branch. I've heard good things about the original first branch near Tiananmen, and have eaten there but was not impressed by being served COLD duck on styrofoam.

Da Dong: Very decent duck, a little pricy but nice environment especially at their new branch near Dongzhimen. Nice variety of dishes available, their menu is HUGE and I mean literally, it's almost as thick as an encyclopedia. Fancy, nice place to bring guests and visitors. Book in advance though as there's always a long queue.

Liqun: Can be hard to find in a back alley amongst all the old hutongs, but recent construction/demolition have made it significantly easier. Food is good, duck is very well done, roasted with 'fruit-tree wood'. Price is very affordable, but the restaurant (which is located inside a old and poorly maintained hutong house) looks pretty dirty and isn't suitable for everyone. Lotsa foreigners and foreign dignitaries have eaten here, judging from the faded photos on the wall. Heard it's gonna be demolished but it's still there a year later.

Ya Wang (duck king): Decent duck, decent price. Place where the local tourists go to, not really known to foreigners unless you've lived here awhile and seen one of their branches. They have 'rest areas' where they lay out free cigarettes and lighters with the Ya Wang logo and address.

Re: Beijing duck places

Me has something to add...

Bian Yi Fang was the truely best best one in the old time. Still one of the best nowadays. Cheaper than Quan JD and DD.

The problem I have with DD is its other great selection of great dishes make it really difficult to concerntrate on the duck.

-thanks
