Why are most male fashion designers gay?

curiosity from a straight man.

"To be beautiful, all a woman needs is a black pullover and a black skirt and to be arm in arm with a man she loves." - Yves Saint Laurent (August 1, 1936 – June 1, 2008)

as YSL once said, "fashion fade, style is eternal"... may he rest in peace.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

Umm, I think it's pretty self explanatory.

I love China! 一切反动派都是纸北京猫!!!

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

Why are most fashion designers women and gay men? Because they're all basically women.
Now, the real question is, why are most bodybuilders men?!

It's better to be nice, kind, generous, friendly, helpful, sexy and rich than to be obnoxious, scary, stinky, stingy, lonely and poor.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

Is the self-explanatory answer that they can work around beautiful women without being overly distracted? It may not be that simple. There are some straight male designers, but they are clearly not the norm. It would be interesting to compare the ration of gay designers in interior design or other fields involving much taste and aesthetic sense as opposed design that is more technology-heavy such as architecture and graphic design.

Anyway, Yves Saint Laurent was a genius - even a revolutionary - and a very stylish fellow himself. May he rest in peace.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

I just mean, at least the average straight guy, is generally not concerned about things like this.

I love China! 一切反动派都是纸北京猫!!!

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

it's because of gender roles in society. when boys are growing up, they play with trucks and guns, and girls play with barbies and sometimes pedophiles' private parts.

there is nothing inherently feminine about a gay guy's flamboyant social behavior, he is just mimicking what he perceives to be the standard of "feminine" behavior. since fashion conceptually revolves around beauty and self-maintenance, and caring about these traits is generally expressed more in the feminine role in society, gay men and fashion go hand in hand.

besides, men are basically better than women at everything, except child-bearing and seduction. let me rephrase that... men are better at almost everything that requires skill. this probably explains why gay men excel in the fashion industry.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

With respect to getting tail, fashion has to be a niche market. I'm sure there are some genius straight guys out there who recognised that they could work in an industry that can not only pay well, but will mean that they are surrounded by beutiful women 24/7, and there only competition against getting action are lesbians or homosexuals. Damn you hindsight!

oh, come on, beijing rob... let's put away our predisposition to be politically correct on the issue of gender equality... and call it like it is. you can point to many factors, but even in societies where the gender gap is practically closed in terms of academic and economic opportunity, men are still the ones doing the high-skilled labor and innovation. and we outnumber them 10 to 1 in many of these "math and science" fields.

Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren are straight

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

Actually there *ARE* or could be talented straight male fashion designers, but most of them just screwed up their fashion career right at the beginning by messing with beaties and couldn’t continue and change their career to something else, so the success left to gays.

It's not a case of political correctness so much as inaccuracy I think. Whilst it is true men still dominate many fields of employment, that is often because there is still an issue with women being able to get into these fields. Also, there are fields that some women may not be interested to get into. The fact is though, in somewhere like the UK, girls have been outperforming boys in almost every subject area at school for the last decade at least, and the gap is widening. As a guy myself I have no problem acknowledging that women can certainly be as skilled in almost every aspect of work and study, sometimes more skilled.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

so, kkpc2206, you mean to say that there is a global male conspiracy to keep women out of the important fields of science?

i can attest that in my engineering, math and science classes in university, we always outnumbered women. sometimes in a class of 60 there would be but 3 women. my uni is known as top research and engineering school in the states, and the overall ratio of women enrolled to men enrolled was 4 to 6 i believe. and i'm sure that in math, sciences, and engineering majors the gap was much bigger.

and, your statistic is interesting, because i just read an article yesterday that stated that in western countries where opportunity for women is the closest to being equal, that these countries have the largest gender gaps in the work force. i'll try to dig it up in the mean time...

obviously women are capable, but here we are seeing no drive and no output from women in the societies where they are given the freedom to do what they want. that desire is half of the recipe of what makes someone good at what they do. conversely, it is also hard to like doing something you are not good at. so, in the end, is it appropriate to blame external forces for the fact that women don't excel as men do in these areas?

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

It's a natural fact that women interested in science not as much as men do. But there are some exceptions.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

so, if they're not interested in these fields... then why do women always complain that they can't excel in these fields??

i mean, it's easy for a feminist author to tear apart our patriarchal society, but when do you see a woman complaining that she, herself, wanted to be a scientist but couldn't because the hill was too high to climb.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

Another reason why gay fashion designers are very successful than straight men is because gay men can get along with women and very much understand their feelings and know what do women want better than straight men.

I guess maybe they need some excuse.

why do women always complain?
Well, they just complain, God knows why. get up in the morning and start complaining until they sleep. not sure if they complain in their dreams as well. but I'm pretty much get used to it.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

Your origional post, polezit, didn't mention "science" but "skills".

Women are fairly competitive in skilled fields these days, you might want to take a look outside sometime and get a view for yourself.

Women excel in medicine, play 9-ball and golf on the level of men, and are more and more involved in aeronautics and piloting than ever before. And while I don't believe there's a "global conspiracy" against women, in many countries where PC is becoming more popular, it's still considered OK to pidgeon-hole women into stereotypical gender roles.

The fact is, things have changed and the paradigm is in mid-shift.

So when I shrug and sigh at comments of yours like this:

Quote:

it's not because I'm trying to be PC. It's because this opinion is misinformed and out of touch with reality these days.

Not to mention that there's a lot more women who excel at fashion design than men. Although male fashion designers probably do well selling to men because as a rule straight men don't want to walk around in shirts and pants that have a woman's name embroidered on them. Women don't seem to have this hangup.

I disagree. I don't think it has anything to do with gay men understanding women's feelings better than straight men.

It does have to do with gay men being non-threatening to women, not trying to get in their pants (even potentially), and the fact that romance doesn't get involved between gay men and straight women to complicate matters and confuse things.

Straight men are quite capable of understanding womens' feelings, they just usually choose not to.

I'm desperately hoping to take advantage of this 'role-reversal' thing and get myself a rich wife who will let me stay home, clean the house, watch the pups, and play GTA4.

I'm not ashamed to say that, yes, I will f**k for soup.

You better ask women have gay friends first.
Gays like at least half woman, so they definitely understand women better than men.
Women and gay always can get along better than women & women because there is no jealousy between them, better than men & women because there is no sex involved.

If your GF tell you that you understand her batter than a gay it’s just because she loves you and doesn’t want to hurt your feelings, that’s all.

Re: Why are most male fashion designers gay?

That's your opinion.

I have mine.

There's absolutely no evidence to support either one of our opinions.

Thus, we are equally right and wrong.

Welcome to an exercise in futility.

Yes, and they can't be mentioned in the same sentence with Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, Cristobal Balenciaga, Valentino, Hedi Slimane or even Armani.

TH and RL are really more skilled marketers than fashion designers. That, of course, might be more a function of their being American than their being straight.

I do think that Ralph Lauren has created a brilliant aesthetic and fashion empire, but he's hardly a genius of design. He doesn't create any haute couture. Let's not even mention Tommy Hilfiger. Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen come to mind as very good American male designers, and they are not too straight.

Actually, it is interesting that one straight Italian fashion designer that comes to mind is Roberto Cavalli, and his clothes support the notion that straight men are not good designers.
