Personally,
I've been to Chingari, Indian Kitchen, and Mirch Masala, and I liked them..
but see what everyone else has to say
Chingari (and somewhere else too, i think) has a 39 kuai buffet every day til 2, pretty nice..
What China really needs:
- Bill Nye, "the Science Guy", to come teach them basic Science.
- Jared Diamond, Dan Brown, and Spencer Wells to teach them about world/human history.
- MLK and Gandhi and Einstein to teach them about what being human means.
If you need a good Indian Food go to Chingari but dont take the buffet just go for alacarte their samosas are nice order beef or lamb bhuna palak paneer chicken tika masala garlic naan .the most fantastic naan in beijing is from chingari.
If you leave in haidian or go to hiadiaqn try the Kamats mumbai Indian restaurant wonderfull .these 2 Indian restaurants are nice .
Taj and Tandoor are on expensive side but they give you a ambience & service.
rest all Indian restaurants are cheap indian restaurants with no quality control and taste different every time
I know an Indian Restaurant near Houhai, it's in a small Hutong where there a some bars on 2 side. i forgot the name, been there only once.
the owner is an Indian guy and chefs are i think Indian, too.
I think that one is good.
I had a nice dinner in there with ma girl.

Indian Kitchen is just awesome and reasonable, which makes it more awesome. Didn't the Beijinger magazine mention that as well?
Mirch Masala is another good option. I think there is a review in Agenda magazine.
Also I saw an advertisement of a newly opened Indian restaurant in Zhongguancun in Agenda(I know...), the advertisement says their daily(including weekends) lunch buffet only costs 38 kuai, haven't gone down there yet because of the distance. But hey, 38 kuai on weekend!!
tandoor! some of the best indian food i have eaten anywhere in the orient actually. super succulent chicken tikka, lamb vindaloo flavourful though not quite spicy enough, moist biryani, and loaded raita. whole place was full of indians, not a single foreigner or chinese in the place.. though that could have been some kind of olympics freak incident. not that cheap though... but won't be going back to mirch masala anytime soon!

Indian Kitchen - The food quality is below average. The presentation is very good but the taste is below average.
I ordered some very simple dishes like Palak Paneer , Dal Fry and Novratan Korma .We were 3 indians each from different province but none liked the food, though from the net we had collected the responses and were anticipating great food.
Totally dissatisfied.
Mirch Masala: Better than Indian Kitchen . Prices are bit lesser than most but highly inconvenient to find .we paid a huge taxi bill to get there and found the place too simple and not even 3 star or 2 star . Street corner simple restaurant types.
It did not seem the restaurant had quality people in kitchen.
In some food the oil was too much , in another flavour was just missing. The baingan bartha was a flop.Dal Makhani had too much cream.
The owner spoke to us in hindi but was not sweet/welcoming to us dont know why.
Too average to go there by taxi all the way and below average.
But better than indian kitchen surely.
Taj Pavillion: Good decor. The manager was there to place the order for us .The starter arrived in time but the main course got delayed .We had too much expectations as we had heard this is the best restaurant.
The Navratna korma was bland -just no taste.
Dal fry was good.
Palak Paneer and Baingan Bartha was fine.
The butter chicken was just okay.
Our bill was fantastic ,
Overall average but quite overpriced .
Also one manager may be is not enough , as we had to deal with the chinese waiters and break our head to get extra Roti and water.
Out of 5 dishes ordered-2 good, 1 bland,1-very good, 1 average.
Overall did not meet our expectations for the money we paid.
Tandoor:
Great Tomato soup and Veg Barbeque . The manager recommended the veg barbeque and it was fantastic.
The Yellow Dal fry and Butter chicken was very good.Saffron rice was also delicious.
The jalfrezy was also excellent.
Roti /Nan was perfect.
We avoided the dessert as the the restaurant is too too expensive.
But food quality is good (4 out 5 dishes were really good).
The service was butler service-UK Style. We liked it.
Only problem was the bill-too expensive . We had to pay about
270 rmb per person including some drinks and house wine.
May be we visit here once in a year for birthdays ! or some exclusive events-not for saturday dinner as its a rip off.
We will go to some other restaurants next week/weeend and will rreport the current status.
i have been to a couple of them mentioned here.
Indian kitchen -buffet starters are good -but curries are absolutely tasteless- i was talking with some chinese watiers about them and they mentioned they make it this way otherwise guys will eat up all the food.I felt deeply insulted by this remark
So i went for alacarte and the taste was no different but curries were bit thicker than buffet.
overall i could eat some snacks and nan -the curries are poor .I have been to many gr8 indian restaurants in NY and can understand whats a great curry !
Avoid Indian Kitchen at all times.
Kamats-Just went once and asked for Butter chicken and Nan and some Spinach cheese curry. The Nan was stinking .We were the only ones at the restaurant at 730pm and were wondering if the food was stale. My favourite spinach curry was so poorly made.
The restaurant looks is new but food sucks
After eating we went found a mcdonald to stuff with some decent meal as we couldnt eat up our balance meal was it was so bland and tastless.
Punjabi-Have been here once .The service is hopeless. The turban waiter always gives a grump face when you ask him for more beer (its free and rightful on our part) but for him he thinks he needs to pay from his pocket or something.
Whenever the curries are over he is too lazy to fill it up.
Food too is too oily .Just palatable to fill your tummy for a cheap indian food.
Once I have had great food -sometime last year here, but this experience recently has made me write off this restaurant forever.I would prefer to go to any restaurant in the nearby Solana now.
Ganges Haidian- Because last year we were students at Peking University,we frequented this place quite often. There is no buffet here but the prices are quite moderate. Food is fantastic here. The manager-indian nepali guy is extra pleasing and lovely guy .
He has fed me several meals in the last year.
At lunch we ask for the 38rmb set lunch and thats a steal meal.
A full bowl of chicken curry,Starter-samaosa,Lentils,Salad,Nan and you can ask him the extras of any of these gets over.
Dinner time my favourite used to be Lambroganjosh (its a lamb curry) with Garlic Nan and Saffron Rice.
I have not visited both of their lido and The Place branches, where food is also fine but still I love the Haidian one .
Tandoor-This is very good and stylish and food is very good but expensive place. Per person average eater -rmb 300.If 3 of us we normally spend 800-900 atleast.
This is very good for taking out your girlfriend or a senior business associate for impressing and having a quite conversation and enjoy food.
Mirch Masala- This restaurant we went about 2 months ago and the food was just not upto the mark.
We asked for Butter Chicken ,Chicken Tikkas and Samsosas and some Nan bread.None of these were upto the mark or had any vow factor!
The restaurant wasnt kept clean as i had some mosquitos biting me on my legs.
The prices are on lower side though.
My friend had recommended me but i did not find any taste in the food.
Taj Pavillion: The management is excellent here.Food sometimes could be great or could be just average. However service is fine.
I have had couple of great meals here last year but not so good meals recently.
We went to a new Indian restaurant near Wudaoku metro station in U Mall called "Bindiya" ( the name is not clearly legible on the restaurant door...)
seems there is a everyday a unlimited buffet for 48 rmb. service was better than Punjabi but food was so -so...But the Chef cooked some special dish for my vegtarian friend (the chicken version of the same was there on the buffet) at no extra cost..!
This was a pleasant surprise especially when some Indian restaurants charge 15% etc when service actually sucks.
This restuarant for me is a bit out of the way but is a good option if someone has a good appetite for curry on a weekend
We tried here food once we were on a Project with Beijing University. This was about 2 weeks ago.
Our experience was just not upto the mark at all.
yes the 48 rmb tag was attractive, but the food was quite bland,no taste.
Then I ordered my favourite chana Masala so that I dont go hungry as I had to work till 7pm that day. This was also not tasty enough. Then I ordered a Biryani assuming however one goofs up ,still it would be fine. But even that was not made well and when tried to complain ,nobody was there to listen except some waiters and cahier.
This was my worst indian restaurant experience in Beijing so far.
My choice of Indian is
Ganges/Tandoor/Taj -food at all these 3 locations is quite fine.Tandoor and Ganges are more consistent on the taste. One experience of Taj was that the Indian Sardar owner was so bussy and all the time we had to deal with chinese waiters which I hate.
I guess these are the top 3 restaurants -Taj and Tandoor being bit expensive.
