Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

Why not? You can't be friends with your students and hang out with them? Or you just don't want to date those girls in your class?

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

My two cents are when in China follow the culture. I will stress I am not a teacher but a factory owner. In my business guanxi means everything. Why not let the young girls get guanxi by inviting their teacher out. One thing if you are teaching high school students, quite another if they are college age even if their maturity level is about 6 years younger than their age. As the Nike slogan says"......"

Oh Palestine...Oh Israel...!!!????

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

Any kind of romantic contact with a student is highly unethical and it's probably best to avoid any situation that could be misunderstood,,, that said I am still not sure if that is what OP is referring to.

If he means being invited out for dinner with several or all of his students at the same time I assume its ok as long as you are aware that you might end up in a guanxi trap. I would probably decline an invitation unless it was some kinda of end-of-term gettogether. I wouldn't like being in a position where students expect special treatment or better grades based on anything else than their academic skills and commitment.

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

I would be inclined to agree if Danmairen if teachers were treated with the respect or pay that they should receive. However, this is China and the rules that rule the west in work ethics are not applicable here. Let each teacher decide for himself or herself and let their own morals guide them. I certainly do not want to see any lonely teachers walking the streets of Beijing they might do something like see the inequities in Chinese society and be compelled to protest or complain. We cannot have that let them date their over 18 students, relax, have fun...life is too short...

Oh Palestine...Oh Israel...!!!????

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

well,, its a valid point. I don't think I would judge people when it comes to over-18 students but still I think a teacher would be on shaky ground. From a morally pow society and parents should feel comfortable handing their offspring over to a school / teacher and since you are in a position of power while being a teacher I can only foresee trouble. Still,, an 18 year old is legally a grownup and I assume the rules in China are the same as most other places when it comes to students who are 18 or older: Legal but ethically questionable. Anyway,, below 18 is hands off always.

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

Well put and I agree. Have never been a teacher but I have a factory that employs about 200 18 to 22 year old girls. Most of them are not educated and are country girls but I enforce a rule of no dating in the same departments just to avoid conflicts and aggravation.

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

yeah OP, you need to explain what you mean more...

What China really needs:
- Bill Nye, "the Science Guy", to come teach them basic Science.
- Jared Diamond, Dan Brown, and Spencer Wells to teach them about world/human history.
- MLK and Gandhi and Einstein to teach them about what being human means.

No freaky to start correcting the grammatical mistakes? Tongue

Teacher meeting students in groups is ok. Teacher meeting student in romantic way is probably not ok (ethics).

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

i go out with my students every couple weeks and they buy me dinner. It a good way to build up that guanxi. If you have dinner with students you tend to be able to push them more and they will never say anything bad about you to the staff. In general they will tell everyone they love you.

Going out to dinner with you students every day could be a problem but having dinner and a couple beers every once in a while is no problem.

My students are between 19-26 years old.

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

I see no reason to not meet your students except that it might look bad to people who think you shouldn't but who cares what they think? I'm not talking about romantic relationships just general meeting and chatting/dinner.

Plus you can help students a lot more outside of class as you can give them more specialized help with their English. In my classes I have way too many damn students and I only see them every two weeks for two hours, not enough time and too many students sucks for them.

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the classroom?

Invite the whole class to a public venue, and pay for the refreshments yourself. (Or teach them about going dutch.) That avoids favoritism traps, and you can still utilize the setting for informal instruction.

No dating students who are currently enrolled in your class. Bad idea.

Re: Should foreign teachers meet students outside the ...

It is completely normal and helpful for teachers and students to meet after school except for dating purpose.

Teachers and students actually share the same goal--a better development of the student. So we can say the are actully cooperating. Spending more time together will help one side to understand the other better and thus to coperate better.

Even regardless of the whole teaching thing, just hanging out together as friends is not a bad idea. At least you got soemthing to talk about(the sschool, etc.) when running out of topics.

Why should it be forbidden then? Smile

If you feel like meeting the students after the class, you do it. If you don't, just say no. Its not that a big deal unless there's something special inside your mind, its another case Thinking
