Re: French or spainish

Hard to say really, it depends on where in the world you would like to work and who you will be dealing with. If you're going to be dealing with South America mainly then Spannish is definitely the right language. Or alternatively, if you will be dealing with Europe or Africa, then French will probably be more useful.

Go for Spanish,,,

I am guessing we are talking about a Chinese national whos already fairly good at English. I think Spanish would be the better choice then. Although the French still seem to think it's a world language that train left a long time ago. So unless you are planning to work in France, Quebec or a few African countries go for Spanish instead. It is a little bit easier to learn Spanish than French if you know English already,, the relationship to Latin is more obvious in many cases than French so you will likely be able to remember or guess the meaning of more words. Even if you are considering working in Africa at some point French is not as obvious a choice as you may think. English is more widely spoken than French in Africa with portuguese a close 3rd. If you speak Spanish well you will pick up portuguese at a reasonable level and with a little specialized training you will have no problem handling yourself in portuguese also. Btw,, don't go to Paris ,, it might be a romantic dream in American movies but its an expensive, dirty, crimeridden cesspool of human waste for those of us whos been there for more than a week. Yeah,, I'm in a bad mood today.

Stewie: Let's keep it that way.

Re: Go for Spanish,,,

Unfortunately, I picked French as my 2nd foreign language, coz I lived in Quebec for 3 years.

If we only talk about the language in business, English is certainly the most useful language. I travel a lot on my job. Speaking English basically gets me through in almost any country. At this moment, I'm away from the Beijing Olympics , having a business trip in Buenos Aires - Watching the chicas latinas on street, I really wish Spanish could replace the French in my head;) But...too late, I think I have lost the passion to learn the 3rd foreign tongue.

Re: French or spainish

Really thank you all !
I dont want to go ohter place. Just stay in Beijing , what I want to know is which one is more useful here in one electronic products company. French companys is more than Spainish companys in Beijing? and the salary price? Yeah ,I know English is the No.1 foreign language in China, and I work in one electronic products company's foreign trade department think about changing a job.

Re: French or spainish

IMHO more French companies than Spanish ones in BJ, although if they've opened a company/subsidiary/office here, it means the decision makers/leaders can speak some English. Therefore no real need to strive for the 2nd foreign language.

French companies do not pay as much as US companies according to my very limited experience. No idea how it is between Spanish and French companies.

Re: French or spainish

I can't offer you any business related advice, but I can tell you that learning Spanish will be a whole lot easier for you than French. Spanish is rather easy to learn, you will make progress rather fast, while French might take you a while. I don't know how much time you have at your hands, considering the fact that you have to work and obviously study English, too. If I were you, I'd opt for the easier one.

Re: French or spainish

Spanish is the first or second most widely spoken native language in the world depending on how you count dialects (Chinese is the 2nd or 1st)
Spanish is a phonetic language. It has rules which determine spelling and is spelled perfectly according to those rules. There are no exceptions.
Spanish is very similar to Portuguese and Italian meaning that fluent speakers can sometimes hold a conversation and can read each others witting.
Latin culture is rich and vibrant in South America.

French is not a phonetic language, the only way to learn to spell french is to memorize each word.
French is dissimilar to other romance languages enough that it is mutually unintelligible.
French culture is withering away in Africa.

I learned French, I speak French, I am very very sorry I spent 5 years of my life studying a language as complicated and as French when I could have learned the much more useful Spanish.

Re: French or spainish

Most of South America speaks Portugese actually and not Spanish....and those two languages couldn't be further apart. To a European, portugese sounds like some form of Eastern European language from a country that no longer exists.
With English as my first foreign language and having learned both French and Spanish, I would always advise to go for Spanish......I can't even remember the French for ' una cerveca por favor...."
Since zan is looking to change jobs anyhow, why be worried about the electronics industry? With chinese as your mother tongue and two foreign languages under your belt, the world is yours...

Re: French or spainish

As someone said, an excellent command of english (and by excellent I mean EXCELLENT, like having a real communication skill in any kind of situation, not just being able to ask people where they come from...) will give you more opportunities in Beijing that just being able to chit-chat in 2 languages. I meet a lot of students who think they have to learn a "second" foreign language to be more competitive, when their english is actually very limited at best. Focus on completely mastering one first.

Are u drunk, or did you stop going to school when you were 6 and never made it to geography class ?

Re: French or spainish

Between french and spanish choose less from 2 evils? Spanish is the best choice for you!
Otherwise you have to know asian people are not welcome in France. Because we have much arabs and africans. Now the foreigner quota is full because of them. Then don't waste your time. Thanks in advance.

Re: French or spainish

I agree with the opinion of the mayority of the people. Spanish is more widely spoken than French, it is true that the grammar is a little bit complicate but you will see that there are many similarities between Spanish and English, like:

- Future - Futuro
- Information - Información
- Reception - Recepción
- Bar - Bar
- Sofa - Sofá
- Telephone - Teléfono
- Cafeteria - Cafetería
- Microphone - Micrófono
- Grammar - Gramática
- Divide - Dividir
- Intelligent - Inteligente
- Menu - Menú
- Television - Televisión
- America - América
- China - China
- Adjetive - Adjetivo
- Verb - Verbo
- Adverb - Adverbio
- And many more...

If you master English grammar (if you know what an adjetive, an adverb is and so on) it will help you a lot when you start learning Spanish. The easiest part of that language is reading, you will be able to read very quick.

I hope you enjoy learning Spanish and meet Spanish or South American people.

I wish you all the best!

English and French are also very similar... I mean maybe as much as English and Spanish.. :\

So if i take the same list:

- Future - Futur
- Information - Information ( same spelling !)
- Reception - Réception (almost the same spelling!)
- Bar - Bar (same spelling)
- Sofa - ( ok, we don't really use this word in French but any French would understand it )
- Telephone - Téléphone
- Cafeteria - Cafétéria
- Microphone - Microphone
- Grammar - Grammaire
- Divide - Diviser
- Intelligent - Intelligent
- Menu - Menu
- Television - Télévision
- America - Amérique
- China - Chine
- Adjective - Adjectif
- Verb - Verbe
- Adverb - Adverbe
- And many more...

Choose the language you prefer, the one you think sounds better. Or read books, watch movies about countries where these languages are spoken ...
