London's 8 minutes - did you like?
Did people (Brits and non-Brits) enjoy the eight minute London interlude during the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games?
Personally most of it had me thinking "What the **** is that?" It was kinda, er...quirky. But afterwards, it was the only part of the closing ceremony I actually wanted to see again. The Chinese put on an epic, anti-septic, over managed and grandoise spectacle of garishness once again, just like the opening ceremony. Just because you have 1,000 people behaving like they are in a North Korea military parade does not make it interesting.
Yes the London segment was a little scrappy with Leona and Jimmy Page finding it hard to gel at the start, and the sound quality of sound was terrible. But what a breath of fresh air that was. London will not be bland, that's for sure.

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
I think the 8 mins was a nice little feature. I gotta admit I was wow'ed out of my chair during the whole closing ceremony but those 8 mins kinda stuck out in a nice way. I like that London was taking the mickey on itself with all the stiff upper lip, doubledecker, umbrellas and stuff,, humour like that was missing from the visually impressive opening and closing ceremony. Boris made a royal fool out of himself as usual,, unbuttoned jacket,, hands in his pockets and looking completely out of place,, very much lol.
I was hugely impressed by the whole show although a couple of the songs could have been left out. Can't belive that only 1 of the fullwheel bicycles crashed (into 3-4 of the dancing girls in the yellow suits,, kinda funny). I have tried a bike like that myself,, it's incredibly hard since you have to tilt your body from side to side to change direction,, all I want right now is one of those bikes though,, so funnylooking
Congratulations Beijing,, now Samaranch is retired I don't mind taking over to say that those were the best games ever.

At least it was better than watching Jacques Rogge. That dude says the same thing over all the time, is so rehearsed and so bland without any emotion.

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
I thought it was simplistic and banal - very little thought and resources gone into it and about as inspiring as Boris Johnson's cameo appearance! He is scary!
Regardless of ones thoughts on the merits of Beijing or London - they are both in their own great cities - the common denominator they will share is being 'locked down' for Olympics.
The Beijing Olympics will always be remembered for being a great event - mostly for being a safe event with no major terrorist incident. This is THE major task that London faces and I wish them luck in addressing it.
So can a great/crazy international city like London - that has suffered terribly from terrorism in recent years - be so open in 2012?

i thought the brits' little show was human in scale and provided a nice contrast to the Chinese grandeur. It was kind of a "warts and all" approach.

To be honest I was not too keen on the 8 min show GB put on, but hey they only had 8 minutes- what did everyone expect??
Everyone keeps saying "Will London be better than Beijing Olympics??" It doesn't have to be- you don't need to spend countless money to have a good games. The people of London are awesome and its a different culture, where bigger is not always better. Quality over quantity.
Personally I did not like the closing ceremony- too much pop idol singing by people in AWFUL clothing, which is typical in Beijing. People going nuts
PLUS- WTF why did they not show any people from Team GB, USA or Russia???? There are other people at the Olympics other than Chinese people!
Whatever

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
I was getting ready to cringe, but it was ok. The truth is, Britain is at a stage where it's quite difficult to project an image. Old style marches of guards and horses are linked to its imperialist past and the images would not be not well received. So it is doing the "we're a multi-ethnic and fun country" which is a little naff but a fair effort at a time when the nation is trying to find its identity and place in a world which has changed (and the empire has completely shrunk in size). Also it doesn't have so much to prove as China, so I agree that a relaxed theme and approach to the Olympics is the right one.

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
London's 8 minutes...hmmm...let's just say I was glad that Status Quo didn't get a look in...but it was pretty close with Jimmy Page (yawn). I don't think many would have known who the old man (Page) or the girl (Leona) singing were...the cheers really came on when Beckham who is really known around the world came on...I just thought it was very average, not because I wanted a spectacle like the Beijing opening/closing ceremony, but I just expected something other than banging out an old hit.
I just hope the opening ceremony is not just going to be about whipping out Paul McCartney and singing 'Hey Jude' or 'All you need is love'.
The London games will be different and that could mean better or it could mean worse. I just hope there is more creativity that goes into things than relying on hits that were played a generation (or more) ago that the whole world can relate to.
Come on London! You can do it!

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
Brainfox I like your comments and have wondered the same thing myself, after seeing China showcase aspects of its long history in the opening ceremony. I thought, what will London do? Tea and crumpets?
As for the 8 minutes, who knows how much of that style will actually characterize 2012. But as China communicated (mostly) elegance and class in their ceremonies (opening more than closing), GBR added a touch of brash 21st century mishmash during their performance. 2008 was the kind of Games your wealthy, opera-attending aunt would put on. 2012 may be those of your 20-year-old, pink-haired rocker cousin.

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
I personally loved it.
China has been going for grandiose displays, thousands of people moving in unison saying "We're many, we're harmonious, we have 5000 year of history, we're glorious"
London puts Jimmy Page on a bus playing "whole lotta love" and says " Yeah, you go with that - We're just cool".
Two things couldnt have been more removed - Sure a lot of chinese people wouldnt know who he was, but a hell of a lot of people do.
I wonder if we might see Led Zep Cd's in the dvd shops if/when they open again?

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
i m seeing totally differently
these 8 london minutes were one grandiose moment of 5000y of chinese history like never seen before
realize that jiang zenmin, hu jintao, wen jiabao and the rest of the chinese top officials, this franquist money-driven samaranch and his puppet of rogge had to listen and watch the rendition of "whole lotta love", electric guitar, sexual tension and the hand on the crotch included
doesn t happen much around these days, especially in china
i lmfao for 10 mins
kudos to london

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
Yes, perhaps London should deliberately do the opposite of Beijing. Afterall, being self-deprecating, ironic and understated are what make Britain cool. To celebrate modern Britain, let's parade the footballers wives, exiled Russian and Thai billionaires and thousands of apathetic youth! Go London!

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
London's 8 minutes was such a relief to the horrid of what we already know China can do with thousands of people moving in unison. I got so tired of watching people float through the air in lighted football helmets, singers lip syncing, children with fake expression on, Rogge looking so corrupt, and NOT one view of American athletes. That proves China is a lot of things. I laughed at the bike helmets the guys had on which were tremendously tacky, then the bright red "working girl" outfits the Chinese girls had on and then hearing Jiang Zinmens mistress sing. London should not try to copy Beijing in any fashion because London is better in many ways and that's why the 8 minutes was different and very London(ish). Beijing is amazing in its self, but that's why London needs to do it differently.

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
Can't remember anything about London's 8 minute street show except Beckham. he is cute anyway. Its wise to choose him as the London's ambassador, even though he did nothing standing on the bus.
its also interesting to see the big difference between the East and the West. The opening/closing ceremony shows Chinese Confucianism: harmony, grandeur, collectivism, and the London's show emphasizes individualism, fun and ease. You can't judge which culture is better over one another. We are just different. Next time when you are going to criticize China from your perspective, please remember we are from different cultures and we can't think exactly like you. most time we are very happy to live this way and we don't appreciate someone who is trying to change us all the time.

copy China? I don't think they could even if they wanted to. well, they won't be that stupid to copy different culture. They have their own style and they are smart about it. I also believe that the whole world pretty much enjoys all beautiful differences except some people who are only familiar with 'working girl' stuff. well, Sorry for Chinese style having brought you so much pain.

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
I think all the theatrics with thousand of people reminds me of the depression era musicals. That kind of thing went out of style a long time ago.Plus it takes no real talent in many ways. The movements are simple and not intricate most of the time.I would rather see less people performing more difficult moves and thousands doing and the same simplistic things.

Re: London's 8 minutes - did you like?
I agree with Beijingcat that there is no such thing as a 'better' culture, only a different culture.
Unified movements of the crowd may be reminiscient of China's empiricist past; cultural bias speaks an empiricist mindset that is poorly disguised behind all the 'love' themes.

Not sure what to think of that comment,, my then gf used that route to work usualy about that time the bombs went off and I was out of the country that week. Spent 8 hours trying to get a hold of her while the phonelines were overloaded. Some of the most horrifying hours of my life.

You know what to think. It was a despicable comment. Some things may sound clever in theory but just show up the lack of humanity of some people.

just seemed to me that the city had developed a sense of humour about the whole thing... turning it into the basis for a musical number...
at least they were being honest about all that london has to offer olympic visitors...
