So I am in the early process of coming over on a Z Visa to teach. My question: I have recently tested positive for Herpes, and I am afraid to put it on the required medical exam. Will Herpes prevent me from obtaining a visa?
Thanks.
Thanks for your reassurance.
But I have to get a med check here in the states first, and I'm worried that my doctor will indicate it on my records, since there's a box marked 'venereal disease.' Is he allowed to...omit it?
I am getting a similar health check done in Denmark right now for Z visa. As usual the Chinese embassy in Denmark is impossible to get in contact with by phone or mail (5 mails over 2 weeks and still noone can be bothered to answer me). I have questions to the health exam form, like what can be omitted if any. In Denmark you can't get a bloodtype test unless you are a pregnant woman or in dire need of a bloodtransfusion. Sadly I am neither.
I also need a chest x-ray done and apply it to the health form. What the f*ck is that about? My doctor refuses to let me get that done since it is dangerous and she sees no signs that I need it. I have to go to a private hospital and pay 2.5 months worth of my wage in China if I want it. Ridiculous. I am getting a HIV test done but syphilis is not something they usualy test for unless you show any symptomes. And that's for going to the most HIV ridden province in China (Yunnan).
Amongst other things my doctor needs to examine me for is bubonic plague, if I am overweight ("Sorry, you are 3 kilos too fat to teach English here buddy!") and if my spine is not crooked.
So basically if I want to go to China to teach legally on a Z-visa I need to throw myself infront of a car (hopefully make it run over my torso), get syphilis and get pregnant (not easy since I am a man).
I can see myself in a couple of weeks getting a Denied on my z visa application and sometime in 2009 finally getting my 5 emails answered. It's bullsh*t.

At the time my Z visa was being issued I was in the Philippines visiting my wife's family. I needed my medical so I went to the local hospital in Lipa City and asked for a occupational screening and gave them the med form from the Chinese embassy. They did not omit anything, just simply tested for what was requested ... that did include the drop your pants, turn your head and cough. So if you have anything active down below it may be noticed during the hernia check. I am not sure how strict they are, but if your home country health care system will not provide, go visit your neighbor to get it done ... They did not seem to care that the American had a Philippine health screening and it was much cheaper than getting it done at home.
I've been in China for five years, never had a problem with a Z visa.
If you are coming as a teacher, or someone in the education field, as long as you have the proper documents, China welcomes you here. China needs people who will benefit the country....
But its understandable that they don't want people here spreading disease. Herpes is a virus and unless you are having an active flare up, nobody will know that you have it. Most companies will do your Z visa for you...
If they can't do it, they probably don't have the proper license to hire foreigners and are illegal in the first place....
Don't worry, as long as you are reasonably healthy, they will issue your visa. Little problems won't keep you out.
a couple of advices about doing the health check abroad.
I did it in Europe about three years ago and also had some troubles with the form. In the end...
- I provided a complete blood count and I think you won't get around this, but a blood type test was not required on the form.
- I had to pay an extra fee for the syphilis test for the same reasons you quote but if I remember well there are two types of tests and taking the cheaper and less secure one was ok.
- I did not provide ECG printouts and X-ray pictures but had my doctor write "ok" in these fields (the X-ray is for TBC). You'll be doing another ECG and X-ray when you get here anyway.
- also, for all the fields where it says "status of..." spine, neck, etc, I had my doctor just write "ok".
What is really important though is that
- you have your doctor chop (in red! and preferably round) and sign each page
- you need a chop over your picture on the first page (they had me do it again because it was NEXT to the picture).
For the medical things they're really not so picky because as I said before you'll be doing a full health check again once you get here.
So even though I had the entire test done at home in June and submitted the form (ignored) with my Z visa request (granted) to the consulate in Washington DC as requested on the website, am I going to have to do the whole medical thing again here next week? I'll bring the form, of course, and a Chinese-speaking student (I'm an educator).
And the answer is...an apparent compromise. The Quarantine folks (who, we discovered after arriving at the advertised place near Heping Li subway station had moved a 70 kuai cab ride away to Haidian) wanted to see detailed lab test results despite the completed form. So they had me do the blood test and an x-ray, but none of the other stuff.

Thanks for pointing this out, I had already announced it on my blog but I'll make it a new thread here, too. The new place is like 10km northwest of the summer palace... what a mafan.

But of course the health document I got on Friday declaring me officially alive still has the No. 20 Hepingli Beijie address. All I know about the new place is that it's somewhere on the 333 bus line. The map handed out at the old place is entirely in Chinese, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense for newly-arrived foreigners (or to the taxi driver, for that matter). The health documents themselves are conveniently bilingual (he said selfishly).
If it's so much work for people going to China from relatively safe diseasefree countries I'd love to see the stuff that Chinese people have to go through to get a visa to Europe. I am still waiting for my new school to send me the stamped invitation letter,, 7 weeks and counting,,,

Good to know that someone is trying to follow the footsteps of Peter, an older Danish gentleman who lived and worked in Beijing for many years. He was even on TV, co-hosting an English teaching programme on BTV. As I said, he was a gentleman, which apparantly you are not.
If the whole process of getting your medical is too difficult/costly/tedious in Denmark (why do they need English teachers from Denmark? Do they also require Danish teachers from England???), then I suggest you quit the process and stay where you are. There are simply too many people here who experience f***ing this and bull**it that, nobody forces you to come here.
Consider this, you aren't allowed to bring food to Australia, at least they let anybody bring their herpes to China.

It's not unusual. I mean the whole STD thing kinda is, but the chest x-ray actually is a standard procedure with every country. Had to do it when I went to Canada for a year as well es Japan. It's no biggie.
About the herpes, I thought it was only about genital herpes, so if you have normal herpes it shouldn't be much of a problem to begin with.
I think the information you have to provide to get a long term visa for China is reasonable and not much of a hassle.

It's May 2011, I've been teaching in China for 10 months, and passed the pan-STD test needed to get my Z visa, back in August of 2010.
Since arriving in China, I acquired Syphilis, which is now at the secondary stage. I got 3 separate penicillin shots here, my symptoms vanished, I waited a month, took a blood test and tested positive-- again.
I will return to the USA for the summer in a month, so I will wait get my second treatment for it there, as I don't want to go through the nightmare of dealing with Chinese hospitals again.
My question is this: I will be changing jobs and cities when I return to China in late August of 2011. They have told me that I will have to take all the medical tests again to renew my Z visa.
What if my Syphilis is not gone by the time I take the medical tests in August? I will only be in the USA for 2 months, and if the treatment there does not work by August, I will test positive again.
Could my Z visa be denied if I test positive for Syphilis, or will they just make me get treatment and approve it once I do test negative?

Re: Z Visa Health Reqs re STDs
Don't worry about it...
Don't put herpes on the list..
They don't do a herpes check and if you are not breaking out with sores right now, nobody will ever know.
The do a VDRL screen which tests for Syphilis....and HIV, but not herpes.

If the Z visa has been issued to you, then you should not need to do the medical exam here. Unless, of course, this is one of those new rules...

I had to do the health check again to get my residence permit when I first came 4 years ago, and I'm pretty confident this is still the case.
