How much for a week in Beijing?
First I just want to apologize if this is in the wrong section of the forums. I looked around at all of them and this seemed to be the one that fit the most.
Anyway, I need a little bit of help. I've asked around multiple other sites but no one has really given me much of an answer. I plan on going to Beijing for a week during March 2009 (my spring break from college) to visit some friends who were here in America as exchange students. I'm wondering what a ball park figure would be for 6 or 7 days? I just want to know for spending money. This has nothing to do with the flight or hotel.
My main goal is to spend time with my friends but I also want to do some shopping for clothes and things like that. However, I don't plan on going crazy blowing cash at every shopping center I see. Of course I'll probably be eating out everyday (cheap food is fine with me, although I don't mind a semi-expensive meal or two) and taking public transportation. Also, I want to visit some of the typical tourist places like the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, etc. I'm not sure about night clubs; maybe I'll visit one or two but they aren't really on my agenda.
So with all that being said, what is a general estimate for a week in Beijing? I'm thinking $1000? $1500? By the way, if knowing helps you to answer the question better, I'm a girl and the two friends I'll be visiting are girls. Thanks!

Re: How much for a week in Beijing?
I doubt you'll be able to spend 1500 dollars in Beijing in a week if you've already paid for accomodation. A friend of mine just came back after 2 weeks in Beijing, eating at cheap restaurents, using taxis, buying loads of clothes (he followed the eternal advice of bringing an empty suitcase) and going to nightclub areas 2-3 times. He brought 6000 yuan with him to Beijing and had 2000 left when he flew out. 8-900 $ for 2 weeks as spending money.
Guesstimates: (1 us$= 6.8 Yuan)
Dinner at a cheap restaurent: 15-30 yuan. (hutong)
Dinner at a better restaurent: 30-60 yuan.
Nightclub: Entrance 0-50 yuan, 150-200 yuan for 3-4 beers and a drink or 2. Being white and all you should have no problem getting free bevereges
Daytrip to the Wall: 120-140 yuan all inclusive.
Entrance fees around the city: 10-80 yuan.
Taxi: 15-25 yuan most places inside the 3rd ring.
Subway: 2 yuan.
Half a liter of water or coke: 2-3 yuan. Icecream 1-3 yuan.
You can have yourself a nice week in Beijing for 3-400 $.

Fancier restaurant - 100-200 kuai.
I'd say 50 USD a day (roughly RMB 350), 50x7 days - 350 dollars. You should have money for food and cash to shop and for entrance tickets, taxis, etc.

That's a delicatessen dinner for four!
A couple of years back when I first came here, my friend took me to a really cheap and shitty place, just for the hell of it. 1.5 kuai for a basket of xiaolongbao, 3 mao for a zhou, 1 kuai for 6 jiaozi. Well, I spent about 200 kuai on meds afterwards, but totally worth the experience!

Re: How much for a week in Beijing?
haha,, well that must have been a fews years back. I like to order one meat dish, one vegetable dish a bowl of rice and a beer,, usually that will cost me 20-30 kuai,, but hey, you can buy a gong bao ji ding and bring your own bottle of softdrink for 7-12 kuai. I can't remember ever being sick from hutong food and I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

Yeah, the times have gotten crazy, with the meat prices reaching new heights. We have to be careful though. High meat prices are a perfect breeding ground for vegetarians. Once fully developed, this abomination can't be stopped anymore! This country is the last line of defense.
So you're telling me, you never got sick on hutong food, huh? You must have the bacteria resistance of a local.

Baijiu my friend,, it kills everything,, cleans your digestive system like no other. Come to think of it I might have fallen ill once or twice but not so many times I would avoid those restaurents completely. I could eat a batch of baozi right now,, cya.

it's pretty cool with so many details! 1500 dollars would be reasonable I suppose.
