Why Wal-Mart is better than Carrefour?
First of all, let me clarify that I went to Carrefour because it’s about 50 meter away from my home, and not because it was a place I would prefer to go shopping for groceries. Carrefour, because of its lack of shopping carts, makes it very difficult for customers to shop conveniently. I believe it is the worst way to attract more cash into your store. Making it convenient for customers to shop, should indeed be at the top of the list for business strategies.
As a matter of a fact, I have seen it on several basis; customers wait at the end of the cashier’s line to get the shopping carts of the customers who just finished shopping. On another note, it needs to be notified, that most of the stores in China are full at almost any time of the day. The domestic demand in China is unparalleled to any country that I have heard of. Therefore, the lack of shopping carts still brings customers in China, but that is not the point, at least not for China. Customers will be plenty in China, but for each customers you want to make sure that they take a load of things, a cart full of it.
Carrefour, however, you either find those very small baskets that will make a customer think twice about shopping or lack of shopping carts which will have a customer frustrated before their shopping has even begun.
Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club in China, on the other hand, has shopping carts that are about the size of Costco’s carts. For the foreigners that have no idea about Costco, I will just tell you it’s twice the size of your average shopping cart. Surely enough, for most of the customers, they fill their shopping cart to the top.
By eye-balling, I can tell you that the amount of customers in Carrefour, on a regular weekend, is roughly the same as that of Wal-Mart. But at the end of the day, Wal-Mart is most likely the one that bring more revenue than Carrefour. The reason, as I have stated before is simply that Wal-Mart, because of its huge shopping carts has customers buying more, which in turn means higher revenue.
I would like to hear your comments on why you believe Carrefour will not fix, on what seems to be a very simple problem?

Re: Why Wal-Mart is better than Carrefour?
the shuangjing carrefour always has scads of shopping carts.
not that that's a good thing though, as they've constructed the aisles to be about exactly 2.00001 shopping carts wide, and the place is crowded to the max with people pushing shopping carts filled with exactly one pair of ankle socks in them.
Attempting to navigate through the store with a cart is like crossing chang'an blvd at rush hour on the back of an elephant.

is it??
before the Wanda Wal-Mart, i always headed for the Shuangjing Carrefour.
I found Carrefour has more choices for goods than Wal-Mart does. Well, sometime who need that many choices...complicate mylife...
I often go small community grocery for simple stuffs too.

Re: Why Wal-Mart is better than Carrefour?
After my experience today at Carrefour I would definitely say that Walmart is better because it has better service.
I went to Carrefour today and purchased RMB 300 worth of goods, but the staff probably don't really care about increasing sales and RMB 300 sales per customer is probably nothing to them.
I used to think that Jingkelong service is lousy as lousy can be, aka 'China', sorry to say. But now they have really upped their service and changed quite many staff, at least at the newly renovated branch at Tianshuiyuan near Chao Yang Park South Gate. Now it seems that Carrefour is not that far off, and for an international company it certainly is comparatively lousy.
First off, I asked the girl (whom I would not call her a lady cause her attitude aint one of a lady) about the name of the tea she was selling, she mentioned some chinese name, then I asked which is QuHuaCha (Chrysanthemun tea), and she responded with a bad attitude. Given that, of course I'm not gonna buy any tea from her.
Next is the price checker, I couldnt find one and no one could direct me to one, while one staff told me to go to the cashier to check which I did. Guess what, the cashier said she is unable to check, so I asked her if the item is for free then.
Next is the service counter. Cause I could not check the price for an item and later found out it was too high price so I decided to exchange it for a smaller size item.
I went to the exchange service counter, the girl there told me that since I was paying with Accor card therefore I needed to fill out a form and go to Accor office to get the funds credited back. I asked if Carrefour could write me an acknowledgment slip or any thing at all that will alow me to come back in a few days time to exchange the item with some thing of similar value. She said I could come back in a few days time to exchange, but she will not be there and she will tell the person who will work that day.
I asked her what's the name of the girl who will be at the exchange counter to attend to my case in 4 days' time. But she refused to give out the name and also refused to give out her own name. I find it all very stupid, and very troublesome and time-wasting for me to have to explain my case all over again to the next person who may or may not want to hear me out.
So, over such a small issue as asking the name of the staff who attended to me, Carrefour has gained itself an angry customer who demanded to speak to the manager.
The manager came, I explained to her the purpose of my asking for a name to make it easy for me when I come back in 4 days' time to explain my case, and also easy for the staff to settle my case. The manager, as expected, did not want to give me her name either. She did not attend to me rudely, but she did not solve the issue either.
I asked for the company's main Beijing office phone number, the manager said there is none and she doesn't know any phone number of the company
)
I asked here if it's true that an international company such as Carrefour does not have its phone number registered, and she said that's right it doesn't. I then took a picture of her and left.
Perhaps a representative of Carrefour would be interested in knowing that their company does not have a registered phone number and that its service counter manager does not know Carrefour's phone number.
The act of not making a choice is a choice in itself.

Re: Why Wal-Mart is better than Carrefour?
wal-mart's market cap is 212.12 billion USD at %53.69 per share, [of course, which fluctuates all the time, just a picture]
carrefour's market cap is 18.89139 billion Euro at 26.8 Euro per share.
euro vs. usd is roughly $1.3419, 18 billion x 1.34 = 24.12 billion. appx
hence, wal-mart is roughly 10fold than carrefour in terms of market value. And factoring in wal-mart stocks one year return stands at 18.559%, outperforms carrefour's -44.131% 1 yr return with 62.69%.
and there has to be a reason and/or reasons why wal-mart bests carrefour, given plausible or not.
end of the story.
fyi, there is usually a positive ratio of market cap against annual sales [or vice mo-fu versa, couldn't remember and dunt give a shyte about it], which usually stands at 1.2 to 1.5 for a consumer goods company, suo yi... u du da math, homie
fmi, i enjoy writing semi-trolling posts that make yes-sense.

Re: Why Wal-Mart is better than Carrefour?
To be honest, I never use a cart when I go to carrefour, simply because I never buy that much. Why? Because I have to carry that sh*t home. Taxi, I live too close to the carrfour mart, a Taxi driver would probably flick me off. I'm okay with the service at carrefour, but I didn't have to exchange anything yet and most likely never will.

Re: Why Wal-Mart is better than Carrefour?
Both Carrefour and Wal-Mart are cheaply made, low-priced, meant to have a high turnover with absolutely no perceived value beyond the price. Most products at both stores are produced here in China with no beneficial quality attached to them. It's not in their interest in forging relationships with customers only because there are so many of them and people plan on shopping there anyways.
I've never stepped foot into a Wal-Mart here or elsewhere and I never will. Carrefour is a horrendous mad house almost at anytime of day without anyone giving a S*@t to your concerns. That's why I never I go back. It's like the roads throughout this city.
So you're asking yourself without caring, where do I shop then?
I shop at Wan Hui, JingKeLong, ShingGuan, Bonjour, and Lion Mart.

Re: Why Wal-Mart is better than Carrefour?
Metro ftw! Friendly, never crowded, has more western goods than Ive found anywhere else, from Planter's crunchy peanutbutter over Danish cheese to British ale..and plenty of shopping carts. And ofc, since theyre meant for retailers, they have an obligation to also be cheaper than retailers

Re: Why Wal-Mart is better than Carrefour?
I am in a rantish mood today.
[rant]
All large supermarkets are killing the local ones.
Can't you see that?
In some areas there are malls with whole floors closed that the landlords cannot rent. There is not enough people shopping and buying there. I even heard of a supermarket in a mall closing recently, which is almost unheard of.
The more we use all these superstores, the more we will have to drive to them in the future because there are no local ones. It will become just like the ones back home. Oh... missing home are we?
It is only that you want 'bargains' and cheap stuff but you are selling your soul and the souls of others to the big supermarket devils.
We should all vote with their feet and our money. Boycott I say.
[/end of rant]

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
