youve met two? there are hundreds of americans studying here. let alone working/other stuff. you must have zero social life
i would say around 1000 live here. of those i would say half or more are here on a year to year basis.
Zero because I don't feel a strange need to surround myself with expats to feel secure in a strange land? Actually I live far away from the expat community among my Chinese friends, eating Chinese food, buying Chinese goods ... not in an insular world trying to maintain a Western lifestyle in an Eastern country. I'm also a little too old to be running around in a drunken haze all weekend with the expat college crowd.
As I said, most foreigners I meet are from Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
There are no hard feelings toward us regarding that little incident of defending the south from the monstrous north in the 50s. Of course they think they won that one. Is Kim still kicking?
"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."
Going from the make up of my school (international school), I would say that American's make up 10 to 20% of the total expat population here. (talking about the working community-not students)
I would also say that without doubt they are the most represented Western group here.
Enough for what? teaching ppl how to speak English American? getting screwed by walking skeleton amercian wannabe teen chinese gals? taking over the country n' free all the innocent netizens??
ps u got my vote on the last issue

I am American, live in Beijing and seeking Employment.
I have been a Manager, Quaility Control inspector, Sales person, I do not have a teachers certificate, but have taught English to countless immigrants!
I speak Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Fluent/Native English, and learning Chinese!
Any job leads would be appreciated!
How many Americans are there in Beijing? Where do they work and live? Anybody know of a survey with this info.?
D.C. resident here. I know Moma is a place where a lot of foreigners live, esp. Russian speaking people. I'm also interested in finding out where the community is; I've only dealt with my alums and co-workers so far.
Americans are great, the most loved outsiders here. I have seen Chinese talk about many people but they all love the great Americans. They never mention the dirty Brits, the ugly French, the stupid Germans, or even the pussy hide behind everyone Canadians. Chinese worship one place, it is a little land called the USA! You can argue against this, you can fight the tide, you can whine and whine, the force will not be with you.

Here's one American.
The Chinese love us (or is it our fast food?).

A thousand? That many you reckon? I would say more around 4 or 5 hundred.

Re: Americans in Beijing
Most recent The Beijinger reader breakdown:
31% North America
24% Europe
23% China
5% Central/South America
4% Australia/New Zealand
3% Southeast Asia
3% Africa
6% Other
Presuming a North American split of 80% American/20% Canadian/Mexican, that means about 25% of our readers are American
We print 44,000 copies and they are all gone by the end of the month
so that means at least 10,000 Americans pick up the mag each month
and there are a lot of people who don't pick up the mag
so I'd say 10,000 is a minimum
