Temporary residence permit at hotel

I'm going to China on a business trip and upon arrival will be staying in a hotel.

After my trip is done, I will be staying in China (on a 6-month F Visa) and will be renting an apartment.

My question is for staying longer in China and extending my F Visa in the future, I'm aware I need a temporary residence permit. Does the hotel give this to one upon check-in or is this something one needs to request?

Re: Temporary residence permit at hotel

The hotels (hostels) are obligated to register you within 24 hours of your arrival. After you check out, they will mark that change, too.

If you happen to stay in a hotel (hostel) when extending your visa, you can require a print-out copy of the registration form (ask them to chop it).

If you stay in an apartment, you have to go to the local police station to register yourself. After registration, the policeman will give you a registration form of temporary residence. http://www.cn-visa.com/image/Registration_Form_of_temporary_residence.jp...

When I tried this while staying at a friend's apartment, the police said my landlord needed to provide:

1. Contract
2. Landlord's identity card
3. Proof of landlord ownership

The landlord had no inclination for providing such documents so I ended up having to rent a hotel room (although I didn't actually stay in it) to obtain the temporary registration form.

So, in my experience, it's not simply a matter of dropping into the police station to register yourself. You need the accompanying paperwork from the landlord (and preferably, the landlord should go with you to the police station).

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Thanks.

Re: Temporary residence permit at hotel

When renting an apartment as a foreigner you definitely need to make sure that the landlord will go to the police station with you and take the deeds of the apartment and his ID. They may or may not want to see a contract.

Be sure and ask about this before you agree to rent a place. I had one landlord who was traveling and it took us a month to get hold of him. The police wagged their fingers at us for most of an afternoon and threatened to fine us, then changed their minds and made us write confessions etc. But that's another story.

Question : 6 Month F visa - what is duration of stay ( days )?

Re: Temporary residence permit at hotel

6months F vis you got in Beijing has no limitation on each stay. But F visa you got in HK normally is 30/60days each stay.

Feel free to let me know if you have more questions.
