someone told me Modern Sky had about 10,000 people there on the peak day. I also heard there was a 3-hour line to get in

Modern Sky
Modern Sky was a huge disappointment.
I waited 75 minutes to get in the door, my friend had to wait 3 hours when he arrived later in the afternoon.
After purchasing the ticket you had to go directly in the festival. This meant that you couldn't buy tickets for friends who were arriving later in the day. Also, no re-entry to festival grounds.
Last year you could buy a 3-day pass for 120 kuai. This meant that you had to wait in line the first day (i think I waited half hour), but you could go directly inside without waiting in line for day 2 and day 3. No 3-day passes this year. Also could only buy day-of tickets, so couldn't make advanced purchase and avoid waiting in that huge line.
With only 2 stages of live music there really wasn't an opportunity to pick-and-choose the acts you wanted to see. This should be the specialty of a live music festival, the ability to stroll from stage to stage, taking in a little bit of a bunch of new acts.
The majority of the bands and musicians playing at the festival play all the time in Beijing, so they weren't novel or unknown. Why would it be special to see Joyside, Re-TROS, Subs, New Pants, etc. etc. if you can see these bands on most any weekend at D-22, 13 club, Mao Live, 2 Kolegas, What Bar?
No major international acts (the Yeah Yeah Yeahs killed last year).
On the first day by 4pm the festival had completely run out of water/juice/ice tea/beer all beverages for at least 2 hours.
No vegetarian food options.
Massively long lines for restrooms.
Electronic stage and ROCKR stages were too close together and their sounds mixed together...bad.
The festival was good for those who wanted to get their drink on. I liked the idea of the bar in the electronic stage area. 10 kuai well drinks that were poured fairly strong. Also 5 kuai for a large bottle of Yanjing.

I suppose Modern sky ruled the musical festival thing this year. MIDI lost the battle before the holiday even started.
Went to their crude small MIDI school during the holiday. It was so difficult to find the location, MIDI school is in the middle of nowhere. I bet there were no more than 500 ppl went to the festival that day, no decent public toilet, only several giant boxes out of the campus.
Only two stages in their school. And the stages are too close to each other, can't blame anyone tho coz the campus is too small. Didn't have to wait in line in any case. 5 RMB for a beer of course. Good bands played at the first two days, like Monokino, Liquid Architecture, Noopinion, Useless ID....I only watched CMCB which is the Iconic Hip-hop band in Beijing's underground bands. Wasn't disappointing at all.
Great street food were everywhere out of the school. Everyone was surprised and ordered loads of Chuars, beers, ma la tang and popcorn. Me and my friends all agreed that there should be lots of street food in Olympic area during that time.
I have to agree with lomsaku, most of bands can be seen at D22. Organizers of MIDI sucked so much this year. But still felt very different to watch rock'n roll shows in a poor school, and enjoy their local chuars. Styled changed, but more closed to the hardcore.
