Hi, My name is Steven He, I am a Chinese lawyer in CBD who can do this job. I helped foreigners to have their documents notarized before. Also, as a lawyer, I can do the certification for you. My phone number is 13661398420. If you want to have your documents be certified by lawyer, the charge will be RMB 1,000.00 and it will just take a few hours. However, if you want to have the documents be notarized by the notary public, generally it will take one week, and the costs may be varied in different notary office, ranging from RMB 1,000.00 to several thousands, plus the translation fees.

Babo, do you need a Chinese lawyer or can it be a foreign lawyer? If you need a chinese lawyer, you may have to go to the gong zheng ju to have them notarize it (pain in the ass and takes like a week or so). If it can be done by a foreign lawyer, then I'd suggest asking one of your friends or a friend of a friend - any US lawyer can certify documents as far as I know but cannot notarize them - one needs to be a notary.

Hi, don’t listen to them what they ask u to give is tooooooooo expensive. There is an office named “Shuang Xiong” specialized in doing notarization, police criminal certificates and other important documents for foreigners and for the location u just need to walk 100m from Yong He Gong visa office.
If u comes at Yong He Gong visa office gate u just need to continue your way and after 100m just behind the bus station is the location of the company. If u can’t found the place u can ask the security for help. I went there several times and their prices is quite cheap and sure.
For more information u can call their Tel number: 64027596

For some purposes you need a Chinese notary (gong zheng ju), for other purposes you need a foreign notary, so you need to find out which is required.
As a UK citizen, if I need a foreign notary I go to the British consulate, who will notarize documents for a fee, I don't remember how much it is but I think it's about 400 RMB. I imagine other foreign consulates can do it also.

If i need my marriage certificate notarised so i can use it as evidence of marriage in China do i have to send it to uk to be done by british and notarised in the Chinese Embassy in London? Is anything else acceptable by PSB or bank as evidence of relationship between me and my Chinese wife? Chinese notary offices are rubbish

Re: looking for a lawyer, notary to certify a document
It would probably depend on whether the marriage took place in China or the UK. The Chinese Embassy in London don't notarise things, they "certify" documents, in the case of a passport the process is quite complex, you must first get a UK notary to notarise a copy of the passport (i.e. certify it as genuine), you then get the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to certify that this genuine copy is an actual UK passport, which they do by attaching a coupon to it called an apostille, then you take the whole lot to the Chinese Embassy where they certify that the documents are genuine. A marriage certificate would probable be a lot simpler because you could get an agent in London to do it, try one of the visa companies like "Chinese Visa Direct", they might be able to advise.

where did you get your marriage certificate?
if it's issued here, you may have to go to a chinese notary office.it's kinda of "Mafan" but no choice. you could go to the UK embassy for authentication once you got the notarization. authentication isn't always necessary cause it depends on what you want it for or who asks for the notarization, check with relevant authorities or maybe the embassy could tell you what to do.

Re: looking for a lawyer, notary to certify a document
OP's question is pretty simple, i was with one of our clients at the notary office when he needed to notarize his signature. so u don't need a lawyer to do that, just ask one of your chinese friends to go with u, price is different at different notary offices, there is a standard price i can't remember how much, but definitely less than 1000, if your friends knows the notary then it can be cheapter.

i got a document to prove that my travel insurance was my primary insurance certified at the US embassy, it cost RMB300 or so. maybe it's not formal enough to be accepted in your case though, call them and see. a lot cheaper than RMB1000..
Trust me, it's so danger.

I think Babo is long gone.
She married a fashion photographer, or was it a lawyer, no hang on it was a famous rugby player...
