Delete/deactivate account?

Hi,

didn't know where to put this, but is there no option of deleting/deactivating your own account and posts that goes with it? Maybe I'm just blind, but I can't find it.

Anywho, I'm asking for mercy from some of you mods to do it for me if I can't do it myself.

Cheers,
Hanna

Re: Delete/deactivate account?

your account can be deactivated but any posts you've put on the board that have responses to them cannot be deleted.

Ok... may I ask why? And again, how can I deactivate it myself? Can't seem to find that magic button.

Thanks V!

And also I can't change my username? I do not want to have anything associated with niennah anymore online, can one of you change it then so it appears on those posts that are not to be deleted? Just something random, like well, 'random' or 'nemo'

Re: Delete/deactivate account?

we do not allow removal of previously posted threads or user name changes for 2 reasons:

1. To maintain the logic/integrity of threads. Deleting messages that have already been replied to means that online conversations become disrupted. While the comments are "yours", by posting them in a public space they become part of the public conversation on the board. Changing user names has the same effect -- in essence, conversations people have been following and/or participating in become retroactively changed if the names of the people involved are changed.

2. To foster a sense of responsibility among posters. If participants in this public bbs think "hey, i can say whatever i want and not worry about whether it reflects poorly on myself" (*i'm not saying you fit this category), then I'm free to flame, trash, or otherwise clutter the place with my comments and in the end I'll just remove them and my account.

On the deactivating account, I will ask our IT guy but he's on vacation until next week.

Re: Delete/deactivate account?

Son of Niennah?

Re: Delete/deactivate account?

There isn't really any technical reason why her request cannot be honored. It is trivial in Drupal to change the name of a user and the account could then be "deactivated" by simply changing the password. It would also be trivial to change the ownership of her posts to "guest" or "gone fishing" which would effectively make her anonymous.

Would it be a little confusing for someone trying to follow a year old conversation in the forum? Maybe (if they already "knew" Niennah)...but I suspect there aren't too many folks wading through ancient messages in the forums who would be bothered by something like that. I don't see the big deal, but it's not my site/call.

Cheers,

Re: Delete/deactivate account?

^ agreed, this person is not the problem.

it would be the example that it set -- I've received numerous requests from people who have acted like an a-hole on the board and then a few months later when they got respectable jobs/girlfriends/whatever have sheepishly returned to ask their identity to be concealed as now they are afraid that someone will identify them.

If I were to honor these requests, I believe it would make people more reckless than they already are, something I don't wish to encourage.

Let's just get the cards on the table here. Son of Blitzer is Bobby Liu. Bobby is embarrassed by this and wants to cover it up.

I'm sorry, I couldn't keep this secret any longer.

Re: Delete/deactivate account?

I can do that.

You really want to deactivate your account?

Please send an email to webmaster@thebeijinger.com

And tell me your username and related email add.

Why do I get the feeling this will set off a deluge of requests for account deletions or deactivations.

Why not just leave all well alone. Some threads are confusing enough to follow as is. Eventually, her/his posts will simply get buried as time passes. Admin's right, posters should be held accountable for the sh*t they post, especially the ones with threats of physical violence .

Sounds perfect, but Admin, don't you think that you are infringing the right to free speech protected by the basic law?!

If we had known that we could never be able to cancel our tbj membership, we would never have joined in!

GIVE BACK OUR FREEDOM!!!

Re: Delete/deactivate account?

Free speech is preventing someone from saying something, not preventing them from taking it back.

Once you post on a public forum, your comments become public. If you don't want something to be out there in public, don't say it. It's really quite a simple idea.

Re: Delete/deactivate account?

Deactivate my account.

Thebeijinger has done nothing in controlling the vulgar population. In fact, most of the improper/rude/dirty posts are written by its own emolpyees.
