Tailored suits - best place to buy?

I'm soon to return to London and before I do I'd like to buy a couple of tailored suits. At home I work in the city and am sick of buying off the peg suits for £100+ that either don't fit or fall apart.

Can anyone recommend somewhere I can get some quality suits knocked up for cheap? I'll probably be buying two suits and my girlfriend will get one so we need to find the best place.

I've heard that LaoSho Market offer a good service, anyone confirm?

Also, should I take photos with me of the type of suits I like or is it like in Thailand where they have books full of different styles for you to choose from?

Cheers

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

I normally using Susan Tailor in the corner of 3rd Fl Ya Show, made over 10 suits now, everyone is perfect Smile they have many magazines with styles...

I have also taken along some FHM mags with some cool new styles in them and they knocked them up for me, prices depend on quality of fabric and you're size, if your like my mate a f*cking giant haystacks c*nt, expect to pay more but if you're a regular c*nt then about 800>1200 rmb per suit, of course you can find cheaper but usually comes with the hassle…for suits at Susan tailor you need about 3>4 days for fitting and final touches…

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

I was wondering the same thing...do they fall apart often? Recently found a tailor down pearl market/yonganli way (adjoined to a hotel nearby) who were asking 1200 RMB for a cashmere number. I thought that was quite reasonable, and thought the shop should be ok if it is aligned to the hotel, but I haven't been back to try it yet.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

There are a lot of threads talking about tailors here. I suggest you go through them.

I have used My Tailor at Yashow and Lisa Tailor at 3.3. I will not go back to Lisa cause they have a bad attitude and have not given me the service expected. The tailoring is not that great either. This is the experience a lot of my friends also are sharing.

You maybe need to pay 800 RMB for suit, of course you can get that down depending how good you are on haggeling. I would recommend that you bring a suite for them to copy for best reslut.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

In my experience it isn't so much the quality of the tailoring, but the quality of the fabric used. The "Cashmere" quote above is probably crap, what % is cashmere? and do you really know. Of course the labels on the fabric are of no help because it will all say "fine Italian blah blah" but it is all made in China at those prices. I can't stand polyester in my suits, so it's tough(impossible) to find good quality 100% wool for those prices.

you may want to look here for good quality fabric and tailoring:

Ya Show probably the best place. Good service, and I'm very satisfied with the quality.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

I have used Carol and Luc Tailor Shop in Jianguomen. Have purchased from Carol at least 3 times with no problems. If anything is wrong they will fix with no problem and Carol has good english skills if you do not have mandarin ability. You can bring in a style that you want and she can probably match it. Quality of the suit will of course depend on the fabric you choose. If you choose a lesser quality fabric, of course your price is going to be cheaper. She can do both men and women and they have a very basic website that can u can look at http://thebeijingtailor.com/english/top.html

Can you give us some price examples?

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

Last items purchased was a tuxedo with a vest, custom shirt and a tie, along with some other dress slacks and I don't remember the exact price but it was under 1,000 RMB and much cheaper if I had rented something similar in the USA for the wedding I attended. I am a repeat customer and worked with the "Luc" part of the shop a few years ago, so maybe I can get a better deal than most.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

my boyfriend always goes to Yashow; reasonable prices and good quality. I heard about Carol and Luc, they seem to be pretty good too.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

Note that you can get a suit for as cheap as 450 rmb in yashow.... but the material is crap.
They'll tell you it's pure wool, they'll swear on their mothers' lives that THEIR stall uses high quality material unlike all the other stalls, but every single one of them uses the same fake polyester-blend crap.

Now look, you can still get a decent suit, and god knows it's cheap. But you will notice a difference from a real, quality suit. It's not always obvious, but when you put your suit on, it just looks cheap or tacky somehow .
The tailoring is usually pretty good though, so don't expect it will fall apart (assuming you treat it like you would any other suit).

If you just want a few convenient suits to wear casually, then you will be very happy with what you get from yashow for the price.
If you want a suit that LOOKS GREAT and one that you could wear to a job interview and feel proud... there is no alternative: you need material imported from the UK or Italy.

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

I use Senli for overcoats and the occasional jacket because he´s amazing. Trained craftsman who does everything himself..Horn buttons etc etc. But he just quoted me 4500Y for a linen suit which is a bit stiff, so now I´m taking his stuff to Sunny at Yashao and have it copied at 600Y `cashmere`(just Chinese produced wool) herringbone coat
and 400Y per linnen jacket, 150for pants. Never used Sunny for suits after the first few times because every time I forgot some detail (colour of lining, buttons etc) it came out bad. Shirts are always great though and, at 90Y per shirt a hell of a lot better than any of the rack.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

York tailor will come to you and actually listen to what you say! Cant speak better of them, and have tried many others will various degrees of disaster.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

I think luc and carol does the best job out of 4 tailors tried
just one fitting and bam - perfect suit w/o the need for more alteration. Price is priced a little higher than yahow and etc and have less materials to work w/ but will get you something done right on first try.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

how much are the prices in luc and carol?

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

I think Thailand's cheaper than this place, but again you get the material you pay for. They're usually Indians in charge over there though they farm their orders out to common factories (so it is said).

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

around 700-1000 per suit
he would not go under 1k for the wool suit
I know for sure i could get it 700 easy in 3.3; but had to deal w/ a load of adjustment before getting it right.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

Dont know a good place, but i can tell you where not to go: Jim's tailor!!! this guy (and his staff) is a huckster...
just look how he dress... and then run away
ask him for a slim pant, he will make a parachute!

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

Tailors aren't a problem, getting good fabric is.

totally agree with you. gotten a shirt made and the worksmenship is really good but the fabric sucks big time.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

Don't go to Yashow or silk street, both markets sell bad quality fabrics, and horrible quality tailoring. You have to go to another one like Luc, D and J, Daves, etc.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

Bump. Any recent info would be really useful. Going on a biz trip to Europe in a few weeks and want to be looking sharp.

Does anybody have a recent good experience with a specific shop? I want to get a suit made that will stand up to international style and quality standards while, of course, spending as litte as possible. Is it possible to get away with 2000-3000 kuai or does one need to go toward the 4000+ range?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

no dude, if you want to get something that stand up to international quality standards, 4000 is the bare minimum.
If you can buy in Europe you will get more for your money. Theres just a few shops you can go here, like Daves, and maybe senli.
You can get a real good quality one for 10,000 RMB if you go to the big english chain stores in guomao. I don't remember the names but they are popular.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

Goodwill. 10 a suit, 10-15 for shoes(USD), 4 for ties. Dang newbies.
3 weeks of looking = 4 suits ,3 blazers, 4 pairs of shoes, 5 ties. Hart shaftner marx X2, dior, burrberry, etc. suits; allen edmond shoes (used), new cole haan loafers. I also got a new suit (never used) that was given to goodwill because it had a few holes in it (looks like moths). The suit still had its tags (365.00).
Get a suit and have it altered/repaired in China (if it doesnt fit). At least you know the quality of the fabric.

Re: Tailored suits - best place to buy?

Wait, what? "You can get a real good quality one for 10,000 RMB", well yeah, you can... even in the US. But that's not the point I think. The idea is that it should be less expensive. When I was there last (granted it was about 3 years ago), I paid less than 600 for a serviceable, custom tailored suit. I would imagine that 1,000 would get you a very nice suit, well tailored in nice fabric.

thats the point. In america for 1200 you can get a pretty good tailored suit. But that same one for 1200 would cost you 5000 in china. the only thing cheaper is the tailoring itself, everything else is way over priced. Just like if you try to buy a luxury brand here, it will be 2x the price for exactly the same sh*t.
