Charities wanting secondhand clothes, furniture, kitchen appliances etc.

I am about to leave Beijing, and since i've been living here over two years I have a number of things not worth me sending home, but things i do not wish to simply thrown away. I also dont have a car, so would need the heavier things to be picked up. Anyone know who i should call, charities etc. Also, does anyone know of any clothes collections going on for the homeless over the winter months?

thanks!

oooh i need this too. Tis the season and all and I've got lots of stuff that probably isn't worth selling but also too nice for a landfill.

There are lots of places you can donate things to.

http://bca.org.cn/

Blue Sky Healing Home, which is a small medical foster home helping orphans and children receive medical care and surgeries needed. Call 8450 7449 or visit www.blueskyhealinghome.org.

Hope Foster Home, which cares for medicaly needed abandoned Chinese infants. Email joyce@hopefosterhome.com.

www.thedonationcenter.org. Just checked their site and at the moment they don't accept any clothes donations but they do need other things.

Information from a friend:

Quote:
CBN (700 Club) will receive used clothing and misc. items. They will also arrange to pick up used items, I understand. I took several bags a couple of weeks ago and they warmly received them. Their office is near the 21st Century Hotel and their number is 6466 9296. The receptionists speak some English also.

Mr. Justin Fong at the donation center has kindly been helping me out with donations. His email is jfong@thedonationcenter.org

And here are some suggestions from a great user Freakyqi:

Quote:
I'll tell you what I did with mine and maybe you can get some ideas if you can't find a charity.

I put an ad on this site in the classifieds with a few pictures and descriptions, and got a response of 3 people actually coming to my home to buy a few things (bigger items, and not for much money, but it was something).

As for the rest:
all books in English - gave to a chinese friend who works in an English school to do with as she pleases

decent clothes - gave to the elevator lady I've been friendly with the past year

dumbbells, small tools- to the doorguard I've been friendly with

old tv, good computer speakers, household items, dishes - gave to a chinese friend's sister who just moved into her apartment and barely had anything; she was really happy

older clothes, shoes, food items (not gross; a bottle of cooking wine I used once, unopened or barely opened stuff) - a random chinese guy who lives nearby thankfully took a whole big bag of it all. I apologized that some things were open and that he may want to throw some out but I bet he didn't.

It was sort of like "charity" - I mean most of it went to real human beings who needed it, even though it wasn't a formal charity - it was people from my own backyard.

Even if I'd thrown them in the garbage, the local garbage pickers would've gotten them within the hour. Depending on where you live you could literally leave the stuff on a street and poor people will come out of the woodwork and take it.

And if you want to do more, there is a charity event at the end of this month. Nov. 29th.

See our event page later.

The cover feature in the Dec issue of the Beijinger is related to this topic too ---but you better find out by yourself~

The above saying doesn't represent my opinion...
