Feeling ashamed to be an Australian
As reported on NEWS.com today. This sort of thing gets me really angry and makes me feel ashamed to be Aussie. This girl was the only child of parents who had already lost everything in the earthquake and now have to face the grief of losing their daughter. I hope the guy goes down for it, but with the Australian justice system the worst sentence won't be much.
Sydney student Liao 'Elva' Wei died for $200
Last hours ... Chinese student Liao 'Elva' Wei, 18, and her boyfriend Chris Han endured an hour of sexual assault before the balcony fall that killed Ms Wei and seriously injured Mr Han.
A KNIFE-wielding bandit who subjected a group of students to an hour-long rape ordeal had gone to a unit to rob them - and escaped with less than $200.
Chinese student Liao "Elva" Wei, 18, died and her boyfriend suffered serious injuries when they fell naked from their third-floor balcony in a desperate bid to escape their attacker, The Daily Telegraph reports.
The man forced four terrified occupants of the Sydney apartment to strip at knifepoint in their living room before holding them for an hour, repeatedly sexually assaulting two of them as the others were forced to watch.
Police believe they are hunting a deviant whose "opportunistic" attempts at robbery led to one of the most sickening home invasions they have encountered.
His main target was Ms Wei, 18, a bubbly and well-liked student whose parents lost their home and all their belongings in the China earthquake earlier this year.
Ms Wei died when she and her Korean boyfriend Tae Wook "Chris" Han, 19, made the decision to flee their captor in Sunday's attack - and instead fell 25m on to concrete outside their Waterloo apartment.
Mr Han, a popular student at the same Waterloo college his girlfriend attended, landed feet-first, shattering his legs, pelvis and suffering spinal injuries.
He has been speaking to detectives between surgeries.
Detectives are treating the crime as opportunistic, as it emerged the man who followed a female visitor into the security unit block held a knife to her throat when the lift reached the victims' floor.
He demanded money and she handed over a small amount she had on her.
"We believe he got away with less than $200," homicide Detective Inspector Russell Oxford said.
Sometimes the same is different, but mostly, it's the same.

Re: Feeling ashamed to be an Australian
First of all, the media always makes things sound worse or better than they really are. So I would take what that article (or any article for that matter) says with a grain of salt.
Also, we all remember the Chinese guy who attacked and killed an old foreign couple that were touring the Bell Tower in Beijing, during the Olympics.
Every country has it's flaws and it's convincts. It's life. There's nothing to be ashamed of.
Cheer up panda bear, it gets better.

Yet another horrible story from planet earth.
How bad is the Australian justice system? If they get the guy, surely he'd get 20 years!?
And why does this story make you feel ashamed to be an Australian?

Damned meth heads!
I feel good about the fact the police are being very quick, and very thourough in their investigations.
Shows that the straight (as in non drug-addled) Aussies DO care, and makes me alittle proud of them.
I hope the guy who survived realises that we really do care, as obviously normal Aussies came to his, and his girlfriends, aid while the coppers and ambos were on the way, and remembers them, not the meth head loony!

#1 Chauvinism in Australia , well, even my female Australian friends warned about that before I went there. I thought she was joking until I aw for myself. Maybe if you are an Australian man you wouldn't notice it as much.

Aussie women probably don't notice how they act sometimes too. Nothing worse than some rough looking sheila three thirds blind drunk crackin' on to you, grabbing your arse right in front of your wife.

Re: Feeling ashamed to be an Australian
Now, I know that it's fun (and easy) to bash America lately. But, let's not forget that America actually does have some strong points in its history.
Here's what I thought of (in no real order):
10. The Ivy League, which undoubtedly includes many of the top institutions of learning in the world
9. Our great writers and poets: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, Gary Snyder, Thomas Pynchon...
8. Early environmental pioneers like John Muir, Rachel Carson, Barry Commoner, Paul Ehrlich and E.O. Wilson and being the first country to set aside land in National Parks
7. The civil rights movement
6. Accepting (for a period, at least) the tired, poor and huddled masses yearning to breathe free
5. Artistic pioneering in radio, television and film
4. Scientific and technical achievement
3. Early tolerance of different religions
2. First attempt at government by the people and for the people
1. Bill of Rights
