Airport Express still running?
Is the Airport Express still running?
On the official airport it's not mentioned:
..and on the BJ Subway homepage the English web contend is "under construction"
So I presume it's also discontinued after the Olympics together with everything positive that came out of it. Right or wrong?

Re: Airport Express still running?
I don't know, but I can't really imagine that they would stop something that was obviously quite expensive.
Disappointed
Re: Airport Express still running?
I have taken it last week, still in operation!

Re: Airport Express still running?
well the problem with the airport express is that it is:
slower than the bus.
more expensive than the bus.
more hassle than the bus (security checks + longer walk)
really nice idea and all. the route is good but too slow and too expensive.
better than shanghai, where the fast train takes you to somewhere you dont want to go. It is only used by people who live near it or are first timers. When I went to Shanghai, I asked a guard where the station was to take the maglev train and he asked me where i wanted to go and then directed me to a bus that was much cheaper and more direct.

Re: Airport Express still running?
Slower than the bus? I have taken cabs and the train, and I can't imagine a bus being quicker. And 25 RMB is less than the 90 RMB for a cab, although I would guess a bus is a little cheaper.

the bus is 16 kuai and your guaranteed a seat. next time your on the train look out the window and you can see the buses rocketing past you. What is worse, there is a bus from dongzhimen that stops in sanyuanqiao and then on to the airport. It follows the same route as the train.
In traffic I would imagine the train would have an edge.

Re: Airport Express still running?
So it still runs....
So how long does it take from the AP to Donzhimen?
In the past I took the buses and I find them generally OK. Last time I got stuck in traffic. I forgot how long it took to GuoMao, I think 1:15 or so.
Mentioning the SH Maglev is funny. It has not much to do with airport transport, more with a Disney ride. In SH I usually go to HongQiao district, that's way faster by bus. Maglev is fast if you go to the new exhibition center though (or to the Metro).
Best is still the Airport Express in Hong Kong. It does go really from the airport arrival hall to somewhere useful, and has free connection buses. The city check-ins are great too.
Pity planners in China can't think that far.

Re: Airport Express still running?
took the bus last weekend it took about 1 hour to get to guomao. the bus is maybe sometimes faster on the expressway but on the ring road its a pain in the ass...

Re: Airport Express still running?
the airport express to T3 takes 16 mins from dongzhimen, 12 mins from sanyuanqiao. it leaves every 15 mins so if you're unlucky it might take you 31 minutes, add an extra 5 mins for T2/T1
If it's not rush hour and you're going to T1/2 it might be quicker to take the bus, otherwise i'm convinced the train is faster

Re: Airport Express still running?
Sure during rush hour the train is faster, but I usually leave and come back at times that are not rush hour so I find the train rather pointless.
The Shanghai maglev was supposed to be extended into the center of the city but in a surprise move the city planners abandoned the plan after a huge out cry of opposition from peoples who houses are near the proposed line. They feared their property values would plummet. Amazing to hear that this stuff happens in China too, but it seems to have relegated the Maglev to tourist duty.

@benham
Thanks for the details. I will probably try the train, and then hop on the subway in Dongzhimen rather then getting stuck on the 3rd Ring Rd. My arrival time about 18:30 is probably a high risk time (seems only 0:00-05:00 is low risk)

Re: Airport Express still running?
Thanks for the link! I love to see imperfection, bad planning and incompetence! I must see it for myself.
PS: The Maglev looks really rundown too. Why can't the maintain things in China? Deterioration starts from day 1 here. It's sad.

Re: Airport Express still running?
I tried it from T3 to Dongzhimen. Cost is still RMB25. It does stop after leaving at T3 at T2. The trains are (still) clean and look new. I know, usually in China that doesn't last long.
From the Airport to my final station, TiananmenDong took me about 1 hour.
IMHO they should make the add on subway ride free, like in Hong Kong.
Another suggestion, have the subway ticket vending machines accept banknotes. They do have a banknote slot, but I couldn't find a single one that was actually working (and I do kept crisp new notes for it). I also really did appreciate that many subway stops encourage physical activity by switching off the escalators.

Re: Airport Express still running?
How about an elevator or at least an escalator in the dongzhimen station so you dont have to carry 50kg of bags up four flights of stairs.

Re: Airport Express still running?
rbourne, you are very naive. How can they know that people have luggage when they go to the airport?
