Chinese health insurance, is it a must? (Resident Permit)

I just started a Chinese language course here in Beijing. I was told by the university that there is a law (since October 2008) that students that study longer than 6 month need to buy a Chinese health insurance and that this insurance is also needed to change the X-Visa to a Resident Permit.
I have an international health insurance that is “probably” a little better and I would like to save the 400 rmb for that insurance.
Does anybody have some more information’s about that topic? Is it really a must like I was told?

400rmb, what is it going to buy you? Maybe they will cremate you instead of leaving you on the street. Everywhere I have looked for real health care was much more expensive.

yes, i also guess think this insurance is useless, but they insist that i buy it!
