Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted here in the Classifieds section by agent!

I'm apartment hunting. Been checking the classifieds section for more than a month now. I've always liked this apartment at the Wangjing section, it was posted up at least twice in 3 weeks which I guessed means they were unable to rent it out.
My chinese gf finally called the ad poster last weekend to show us the apartment, she (an agent) told us she was too busy so she got her colleague to meet us there to show it to us and she said that they can show us 2 units which is cool.
Got there, and what do you know, showed us 2 completely different crappy apartments which was not the one advertised. When we asked about it, the guy said that the one we saw had already been rented out which is impossible because we called the ad poster 4 hours after she had posted the ad at night! The ad is still up in the classifieds section btw.
Being an American, it really ticks me when it comes to false advertising cause it wastes my time. Is there some sort of thebeijinger.com website regulation which takes action against these sort of con ppl who are posting in their website? I'd really like to get this person banned! This agent currently has 4 ads running.

But yes, let's root out them bad apples!

Oh Wind, if Winter cometh, can Spring be far behind?

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

LOL, cause americans like suing people for any reason possible! Smile

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

I would guess, 80% of the agents operate like this. If you look at enough ads here you will see the same photos posted dozens of times for apartments all over the city. If you call them they will just lie and tell you about the great place and when you go to see it it was "just rented". Not much you can do about it.

What ads are they running? You can always out them in this thread, but they will just change their user name.

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

NO CAPS LOCKED ON . Just money , money , money

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

Yes, American's really hate false advertising alright. Showing fake or enhanced images in order to sell their product. It really ticks them off. Call Me

But these apartment guys really, really piss me off too. And the one they have available is always about 20% more expensive than the one they advertised.
They tell you that ones just gone, but the next month the same ad is there again.

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

The Chinese sites are much more reliable. Use soufang.com, with the help of a Chinese friend if you need language assistance. Don't let them know you are a laowai before they quote the price over the phone though if they haven't listed it online. Don't know why anyone would use TBJ to look for houses. Soufang is much better and much easier to use, and you won't get all the dodgy "agents" that use the sight because they think they can make a quick buck from laowai. They have a big database of houses and good search parameters. You can look for houses in a certain area, of a certain type, within a certain price range.

Congrats on making the most blatantly false statement in the history of "The Beijinger".

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

LOL, this thread has gotten quite amusing.
And that Big MAc pic is hillarious! But u know, at least what u actually get in mcdonalds is about 70% similar to the advertisement (u get all the ingredients mentioned although it may not be exactly the same size or freshness). With my issue with the aparments, I was expecting to see a "Big Mac" but they showed me a "Mcchicken" from the $1 menu!

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

I looked at the soufang.com site, but it looks like it is all pretty low end stuff. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

why not find a much more professional agency rather than kinking on those so called stupid Ads! Silly

dongzhimen rocks!

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

Hi,

I will not wade into the McDonald issue here. To everyone their own.

As I am currently also "hunting house" (BTW, what caliber hunting rifle do you think is good for hunting that kind of game? I was thinking of a 50) I have found two in three people I dealt with quite straightforward and honest.

The other had (of course) the "oh this apartment has just been rented out, but we have others available" and what was available was non too great for the money.

To be honest, two good ones out of three estate agents (or used car salesmen for that) is more than I would expect in germany, the UK or the US...

As a personal recommendation (not sure if she can help with Wangjing though, you can ask), Lihui was very helpful and pretty much got me exactly what I wanted.

She posts Adds under the handle lhcure. All the apartments she has currently posted where available last week (when I visited them) and the photos are real too.

Should be pretty much across the board. Try fiddling with the saerch parameters. What's your definition of "low end"?

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

Well, ads on The Beijinger are not so reliable. Prices are often too high considering the quality/price ratio.

Since it's difficult to find apartments directly from the owner, at least try to rely on big agencies, who actually have a reputation, for example "Wo Ai Wo Jia". The problem is that, apart from the luxury apartments (from 4000RMB up) they ask a commission, which is pretty high, usually 2 months rent.

Anyway, a good way to find an apartment is going in the area you are interested in and see if on the windows there are some ads with numbers....there is likely to be a owner and not an agency...

Yeah, I fiddled. But could only come up with a few in the CBD area over 5000rmb, but I agree for the lower end it's quite useful.

As for agents and commissions, we end up paying one way or another. If the owner pays the fee, they will just end up increasing the rent to compensate.

I have a good agent I've used for 3 years, speaks good english, honest and will help you with any problems for the length of your contract. If anyone is looking pm me.

There should be a reasonable amount above 5k. And I agree, reputable agents are also good. The trick is not going to the smaller real estate companies. I think woaiwojia was good too, but in my recollection they only ask for one month in comission, and that will all be paid by the landlord if the contract is a year or more. I still thinks it pretty strange for the tennant to have to pay if he signs a sic month contract though, but then again THIS IS CHINA!!!

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

Sorry to hear that. But I think if the agent really wants to ruin his or his company's reputation by doing things like this, we can't really stop them.

For now, I've asked all agents to post real pics of their apartments, personally. Coz it's not one of our rules. Pics are not necessary in classifieds.

But I think there is something that I can help, if you still have that person's username and email add or cellphone number. I can ban this account and send him a warning email, even remove all his other Ads on the site. Hopefully he can learn the lesson from this, but who knows...

what do you say? You can send that user's information to webmaster@thebeijinger.com

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

I believe with woaiwojia, if your rent is below 2500, you pay the commission. If its above, the owner pays it. My gf used woaiwojia to find our current apartment.
They're sometimes good sometimes bad. It took them 3 months or so to get us our mailbox key.

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

Dear Chinaboy
You obviously had a much better time finding an apartment in Bangkok than I did . Yes . Beijing is different . Finding an apartment in a big city isn't.
One of the better ways to find an apartment is through friends . Get them to check out their neighbourhoods . So you don't have to . Quite often they will know someone who knows someone .....

Re: Got taken for a ride when looking at apartments posted ...

Simon,well that's a really good idea,and very chinese way---"guanxi" lol,
