Hobby Shops

I'm preparing to Dork-it-up in a big way.

I'm looking for a quality model store. I need paint as well as some other supplies.

Does anybody know of a store that carries model paint and possibly miniature scenery of the type used with model trains and things of that nature?

I live near the center of town so places close to there are better.

Re: Hobby Shops

Maybe others can help, but I have not seen any hobby/model shops since I have been here. It does not seem that this kind of thing is as big as it is in the west. I think most people work too late or too hard to have time for any hobbies apart from bird/pet keeping. That's just a personal viewpoint, so I am happy to be wrong. Oh, and I have seen some radio controlled cars/helicopters etc around too.

I have seen some stuff (plastic/machstick models etc) in the chinese markets occasionally so they must have paints too. I saw railway trains as well somewhere the other day, but cannot remember where. Not much help. sorry.

Re: Hobby Shops

Try Di'anmen Xi Dajie past Beihai, on the north side right across from some military post. Also there may be one in Oriental Plaza or one of the other WFJ malls. Finally, I am pretty sure I espied one on Xin Jie Kou Bei Lu (dajie?) between Forbidden City and Ji Shui Tan subway station. Xin Jie Kou also has a ton of music shops (as in instruments)... You see these shops in the darnedest places, when you're NOT looking for them, then you can't remember.

Re: Hobby Shops

Gu Lou has a few along the street where they sell console games etc

Re: Hobby Shops

So Gu Lou it is then.

I've heard that before and I've walked past that area plenty of times. Never noticed them before but I wasn't looking.

@Jordean - I went west of Beihai tonight and didn't see anything. Maybe the one you're thinking of is gone.

Re: Hobby Shops

It was there a couple of weeks ago. A little hole in the wall, and when they're closed, kind of hard to spot. Possibly not much in stock you would want, looked like mostly military-type stuff. I guarantee after you find what you're looking for, one day you will be on Di'anmen and see this place.

Re: Hobby Shops

The one just opposite Cafe Zarah on Gulou Dongdajie actually has quite an impressive amount of things - cars, military, but also trains, model Chinese houses and anime figures.

Re: Hobby Shops

Why did this get moved? I thought about putting it in hobbies and games too but I'm looking for something.

It's a perfect example of "where can I find..."

Re: Hobby Shops

Also, check out Jiaodaokou North street and North of Beixingqiao. I remember there were a couple of places near there, though I have not checked in a couple of years. As I recall the models are cheap, but good paints and supplies tough to come by.

Re: Hobby Shops

Last night I went to the place coeurdelion suggested. It's right where he said. Just East of the North end of Nanluoguxiang on the North side of Gulou East.

The store is huge (by the standard of the neighborhood. They have a big model paint selection. 17 RMB for a little bottle is actually a good price. Can't comment on quality yet.

They also have a selection of modeling tools and materials. Epoxy putty in several colors and flavors, work mats, little paint brushes and such.

The only thing I wanted that they didn't have were little model trees and things like that. No trains either (not that I wanted any but could be useful for someone else).

All in all a good place. And close to home!

Re: Hobby Shops

Check out the website www.xinshi365.com. These will show the location of a hobby store chain with three locations. I have been to two .Get a Chinese speaker to map them out for you.

One is on the east side of Xinjiekou South St, immediately south of the intersection with Xishimen Inner St. Nearest subway is Jiushuitan .

The second branch is in Haidian in Zhongguancun Plaza near the Carrefour.

The stores have a good selection of Japanese kits Tamiya, Dragon, Hasegawa as well as Trumpeter Italaeri etc. mostly armour, planes and ships. Basic tools Tamiya type paint etc but not much scenery

I have given up on trying to find scenery there are some train stores but the prices are ridiculously high so am going off to Garden/Flower markets also aquarium shops to see what is out there.

Look for the Chinese Magazine Model World 15RMB once a month all Chinese but there are ads and links to websites etc,

Re: Hobby Shops

Maelstrom carries Games Workshop paints & models. The models might not be your cup’o tea, but the paints are usually pretty good, if a little pricey. The shop is at 39 Gu Lou Xi Da Jie in Xicheng…phone is 1064060878.

Re: Hobby Shops

If you're into the anime/Gundam models, the 6th floor of Soshow Mall is a good place to go. Plenty of model kits, supplies are a bit lacking but can be found. If you leave Chongwenmen Station by Exit C and head south, you should see it right away. If you don't, keep walking past the Glory Mall and you should see it very soon.

I know I've seen a good looking place on Gulou, but that was while I was passing by in a cab on the way to Nanluoguxiang, and when we walked back the same way, we couldn't find it at all! Sad Does anyone have any other good addresses/locations of places that sell Gundam models and modelling supplies besides those mentioned here?

Re: Hobby Shops

Realise this is a slightly old thread but thought I would provide an update today. The place opposite Cafe Zarah on Gulou East Street. It doesn't have Games Workshop products (as far as I could see) but does have a good range of military models, and more importantly, glue/paint/modelling tools.

The store in Soshow Lvl 6 is a Games Workshop store. They've got a relatively decent range of kits; and some play tables as well. However, I forgot to check how they were stocked with paints/glues etc...
