BLCU - the good the bad and the ugly - advice needed
This is for all those Chinese learners who have studied at BLCU.
I'm going there to study next year, but I've heard from friends there that the teachers can sometimes be a bit hit and miss. I don't intend to waste my time and money on a really bad teacher, so I was wondering if any BLCU students (or ex-BLCU students) could tell me the names of some of the bad teachers they've had, so when I go to baoming I can go prepared.
To start the ball rolling: about four of my friends have had a teacher called "Zhu Laoshi" (not sure which hanzi it is). Some of my friends said he was a very bad teacher, some of my friends said as a teacher he was haikeyi, but everyone said he was a horrible person. He criticises his students every class, so much that he made one of my friends cry! And he always makes people get up and do speeches everyweek (then he criticises the speeches). Basically he's a mean old bastard who seems to delight in other people's discomfort. So I know if I get a teacher called Zhu Laoshi, who is old and short, I should change out of that class quick as Pan.
Any other teachers who I should avoid next semester?
Thanks!!!

Hmm dunno, haven't heard of any really bad teachers yet, but tell me if I am wrong, isn't it his job to criticize?
I sometimes find the teachers at BLCU way to forgiving.

agreed - most of the teachers i met were a little too nice
never really had a bad experience with the teachers in BLCU...neither did all my BLCU friends. Most of the teachers adjust fairly well - asking the students every week if the level of difficulty is ok. Then again - there's always a couple bad apples here and there but haven't really heard of them yet
if you ever do encounter a bad teach - think you could switch teach within the first 2 weeks

I had Zhu Laoshi. He's a nice man, but not a good teacher. But, in fact, he just teaches the BLCU method. It's totally rote and with no creativity.
I guess I would ask yourself what your goals are. BLCU is good for people who want a really comprehensive and somewhat slower Chinese education process. Do you want to train to be a translator or intrepreter? If so, BLCU is for you.
Are you looking to speak conversational Chinese? It's probably not the best bet. The material is outdated and not relevant. Most of the lessons will have you following the adventures of Fang Yuntian, the Japanese exchange student determined to learn Chinese. In other words, crap you'll never use again. I would recommend enrolling in a course that focuses on spoken communication.
Good luck to you!

Forget schools & universities, use www.ChinesePod.com with a little help from a good tutor (or language exchanger).
Doesn't qualify you for a student visa mind.

Find one where the teacher is not Chinese. Native speakers make bad teachers because they seldom have the experience of foreign language acquisition. They don't understand the problems of learning Mandarin. And anyway, they run a business, their target is your money rather then your language skill.
