Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped

Come on, the reason is obvious! No more not qualified foreign workers are allowed in China in this period of economic crisis. Every Country tends to protect their own workers!

The feeling is that foreigners are not as much welcome as were years ago. Why? Because now more and more Chinese have experiences abroad, can speak more languages and know how to do business with foreigners.

So, if you want to work here, is better to have some special talents that locals don't have, and the mere English language is not any more considered as such!

Live in China becomes more difficult for foreigners...!?!

Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped

Any word on why extensions are stopped or how long this will last? What about alternatives to change or extend foreign visas in China?

OR ARE WE COMPLETELY F*CKED?

Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped

Unfortunately, the English levels of many locals are still not up to snuff. Emails are still often laden with grammatical mistakes and incorrect formal or informal tones, not even to mention errors in written formal documentation. Every time I ask my local staff to write something, I ended up wasting time correcting the English when I should be focused on content quality. And yet, there are other folks who's English is their 4th or 5th language, and yet their English is perfect.

And aside from English language skills, there are also overall professional skills, such as participating effectively in meetings, being proactive, and actually thinking beyond one step ahead. Also, there's the skill of having a good handshake. That's not to say all locals are like this, but I sure encounter this more often here than when working in other countries where English is also not a native language.

A closed mouth gathers no feet.

Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped

Yes, with English like yours, you have proven your own point.

After donning a Patriots cap the Dalai Lama decreed that “the fifth noble truth is this: In 2009, Tom Brady will make people suffer for the suffering he endured in 2008.”

Lollzzzzz, it gives me no surprise that someone with the above piece of funny English decries the English level of Chinese people. Particularly the sentence below speaks volumes about Mr. Perfect's own writing skills.

I think therefore I am.

Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped

f*** all this whining about L to F!!! You want a job? Then apply for a position which entitles you to a Residence Permit.
With a L you are just a tourist, with a F you can do just business but not working on a full time job!

Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped

Chinese do not have experience abroad to any greater extent, any visit to a Guomao office will prove this. Additionally, the vast majority of Chinese who do go abroad, stay with their diaspora and do not learn from the new culture. Hence they do not know how to make business with foreigners, which is why courses in how to make business with Chinese still are as popular as they are. English still constitutes a (great) comparative advantage whereas those who can actually speak good English are surprisingly few, proven again by the large amount of English teachers needed (always with the preference they be native, or at least Western).

Finally, analytic thinking is not encouraged in the Chinese education model, any visit to Tsinghua or Peking University will prove this too, which means that creative thinking, Alpha and Omega in business life, is needed to be acquired from abroad (the massive recruitment in well-renown foreign owned business in China, is tangible proof of that)

32 points for using *diaspora* on a message board.

Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped

Even if all of what you say is true, still if you want to work in China you must have a Residence Permit....so apply for a job that entitles you to it!

Period!

Er...this must be some kind of joke, right? Surely you are not so stupid as to make this comment sincerely?

I kind of like it, it's cute.
I have seen - Wittness's - before and many, many -'it's'
for its,however, ' who's ' is really unique.

Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped

Please, when I was back in the US, the Bank of America clerk could not even write a simple memo and profusely thanked me for writing it out for her. It was also her native and only language so it was pretty sad to see. Over half of university freshmen have to go to English remedial class because their English written expression is simply not up to par. Overall, workers' basic skills are pretty atrocious in the West, with plenty of people who can't even count or spell. You apparently have a few spelling problems of your own. Or I guess if English is not your native language, I would suggest that you keep your missionary/neo-colonialist attitudes back home and think about whether if your Chinese compares favorably to your Chinese colleagues' English. After all, you are working in China right??

Yea I find amazing double standards in foreigners here sometimes. I always tried wrapping my head around being fluent in another language when I was nowhere close to a complete foreign language environment, (i.e. learning to be fluent in German in Miami) my hats always go off to the chinese people, the effort is there, props to them.

Perhaps that's the case in the US.

Why are people bitching and moaning about this?
Why do you care if someone gets an F from an L to live here?

There was a time when I did the same thing, but now I have a Z I'm somehow more deserving of life here?

Please.

Re: BAD NEWS! L-F visa temporarily stopped
