Shopping on Taobao

For me, Taobao is one of the most convenient and bargain discoveries in China!

i mean, where else can i take the Old Spice Challenge without the hassle of leaving home??... and usually for much cheaper prices than shops.

so what are some of the wonderful things you've bought on there?

Re: Shopping on Taobao

Motorcycle helmet, gloves, leather pants for the cold.

Turtle raising equipment, tanks, filters, etc.

Playstation discs in bulk.

Punching bag, basketball hoop, dart board.

Books.

Lots of sh*t, I love taobao.

Re: Shopping on Taobao

its stupid to buy there

Re: Shopping on Taobao

Why is that?

They deliver to your house or office, and you don't pay until you inspect the goods and are satisfied.

Pretty convenient, actually. And cheap.

You're a moron, bobby.

Why bother to have two IDs that are virtually the same?

Re: Shopping on Taobao

Folks,

Taobao is like E-bay in lots of ways.

I bought tons of stuff in the last year and at our offices we buy a lot more.

Key things to note - research the products. A lot of stuff available there will be locally made, make sure you know what to expect.

Only buy from sellers offering "no quibble return" for 30 Days with your money in escrow.

I had to use this once, when a CD-player I bought (classic Pioneer - rare Japanese model, quite a find) had disk reading problems. Got my money back (minus shipping * 2) and that was that.

Look for sellers with lots of positive feedback.

This is largeley the same rules to apply to avoid being burned on e-bay.

What did I buy recently?

1 Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth Headset (Y 600)

1 Set of Rattan Chairs & Table for my glazed-in Balcony (< Y 300 delivered)

1 Projector Wall mount (Y 300)

1 Electric 80" Projector Screen (Y 620 delivered)

1 Cisco/Linksys Wireless MP3/Internet Radio thing for the Bedroom (Y 300)

2 Sets of Halogen light Fittings, one has six 50W narrow beam spots, the other three 20W wide beam one, this one with build in wireless remote control on/off (Y 500 total)

All of the above worked just fine and to expectations.

E.g., the locally made screen is a little noisy when lowing and retracting and the material has very small imperfections on closeup inspection, nothing that is visible with my eyes and projector when watching movies though.

The Lamp fittings build quality is a little rough, but safety would pass U/EU regulations, again, what does one expect for the lowest price?

Of course, you can get almost any of these items at B&Q, Ikea and Gome. But for much more money and they ARE the same items.

So for me, taobao rules. If you know the rules that is.

For electricals and the like 360buy.com is also okay, not as cheap as Taobao on some items though. Good for memory chips to make your old Laptop able to handle Vista or Windoze Seven and similar stuff.

Re: Shopping on Taobao

Really, pay at the door? This is all sales? Specified? Most?

I've wanted a camera but wouldn't go near the site being too wary of scammers (China + Internet). Guess you can't go wrong with that condition.

Re: Shopping on Taobao

Since I don't have a bank account here, I'm thinking about trying this 线下网点付款方式 (http://club3.alipay.com/yy/club/cash/help/index01.html). As I understand it, there are two different payment methods with this. 1, after closing the the deal on Taobao, you get a transaction number with which you go to the nearest convenience store affiliated with Taobao (好邻居 etc.), tell the guy behind the counter the transaction number, pay a fee of 1 kuai, and done. Or, 2, put money into an Taobao account, from which the money needed is withdrawn by the seller.
Is it as easy as it sounds? Anyone?

Re: Shopping on Taobao

Hi,
Can you help me, I'm interested in shopping on taobao but unfortunately I don't understand Chinese.
Earlier I used to buy things communicating the seller using QQ program and asking him to sell the thing I'm interested in.
Can you tell me how can I register on taobao without knowing Chinese? Or buying using taobao agnets is the only way?
Thanks!

Re: Shopping on Taobao

first of all,
if you use Mozilla Firefox browser,
you should download the add-on called Perapera-kun 2.0 Chinese-to-English pop-up translator.

Here's the direct download link: http://www.box.net/shared/2ybrn5h777

the MDBG Chinese Reader is also pretty useful in that regards... it actually translate all Chinese characters on your computer, not just on your internet browser:

if your level of Chinese comprehension is not up to par to shop on Taobao, maybe you should ask a friendly Chinese to guide you through the initial process... only takes 20 minutes to get it down.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, www.taobaofieldguide.com is also very useful.

Re: Shopping on Taobao

Great, I love it. A lot of fake stuff there, but at least you know they are fake and you pay less then in Silkmarket or Yashou. Well and you don't need to bargain for hours.

Re: Shopping on Taobao

I've been buying a lot of things on taobao, generally speaking, i'm quite satisfied. But it takes time searching what you are really looking for with good quality and moderate price.
