I can criticise my own country. can you?
right, I did this a couple of years ago, but it seems to have been deleted. Predictably, it started off well, but descended into a Pro-China and Pro-America nationalist mess. I was even accused of attacking China by starting such a thread. Bizarre.
Anyway, I'll start:
Britain:
-Over governed to the point of ridicule. We've become a nanny state always under the watchful eye of CCtV (not the Chinese TV). We are not allowed to smoke in public, soon there will be a law passed that forbids loud music in clubs, we are being told what we can eat, consume and do in our own homes.
-The financial crisis is giving way to the rise of the far-right who are using the 'British Jobs for British People' rhetoric as a way to get a foothold into parliament. With what's happening in England right now, people are listening to their sh*t. They are preying on the weak and docile to become more prominent.
-The street scum. We have a nation of feral kids with no respect for anything. Knife crime is rife, with reports of stabbings increasingly more common. People may chalk this up to media hysteria. Yes, there was always violence, but it's become more prevalent. people are afraid to walk the streets in fear of being done over by sa gang of Burberry-wearing chav c**ts. The kids, if caught, get ASBOs (anti-social behaviour order), and they are proud of them. It's like a badge of honour.
-Our national sport teams are a f-ing disgrace. failing to qualify for Euro 2008 was a low point in English football. failing to quaify for the World Cup: just about acceptable. failing to qualify for the Euros:a f-ing disgrace.
-Smugness. Our island empire superiority, even in the face of international ridicule still holds firm. we believe we are better than every country in the world. We laugh at dumb Americans yet blindly follow them at every opportunity. We look down on every country in the world, seemingly oblivious to the fact that our own country is falling apart at the seams.
-we've got a royal Family who symbolise everything that's wrong with Britain. The class division that they symbolise is a disgrace. We, as taxpayers, are paying for these c**ts to live the life of riley, while a lot live hand to mouth.
-Jobsworth c**ts. People in small positions of power, much like the people who let you cross the road in Beijing, abuse and crave this miniscule amount of power they have, and they know they will be backed up by the full force of the law should anyone take issue with them.
-Tax is too high, even for the low-paid. Leaving virtually nothing to fall back on in times like these. Yes we have a free heath service and free education, but it's f-ing shite. The state schools are only any good if you have enough money to live in a nice neighbourhood.
More to come. Let's have yours. Let's see how long you can go before the sh*t-slinging starts.
Over to you.

We worshipped wall street markets until it became 'idolatory'. I prefer the European-style of capitalism. just a personal opinion and doesn't stand for americans.

Re: I can criticise my own country. can you?
different country got different moral code, yes, chinese also critisize it's country, but usually not in front of friegner,
if i would like to critisize china, i would point out, china's national soccer team suck, no spirit no hard working, no right attitude.
compare to britian, you are really blessed to have a team which can participate in world cup, or euros, the big event,
And in china ,watching soccer game in world cup, we have to wait until 3 am in the morning,
for you guys, you can just finish dinner, order cup of beer, they enjoy the game,
After the final of world cup, we really are exhausted

i have been studying in singapore, it's like hell, not heaven, as usually been described,
i think china is much better than singapore, don't know whether you could agree on this point,

Australia is getting to be owned by lawyers and other associated middle class trough feaders. We're lucky to have natural resources as we have very little ability to generate intellectual wealth. We run with this so called 'clever country' notion which equates to tertiary education for all, and that will make us great. This has given rise to the 'national skills shortgage'. Any fool can see you require appropriately apportioned skill sets across your population in order to achieve economic and social goals. In Australia we seek to discover immortality through regulation and spending, every accident and illness is preventable in Australia. We're a nation of pretenders and whiners. In Australia we call slack asses 'battlers' and hard workers are 'high income earners'. Every criminal in Australia is a victim and every successful person should pay more tax because they are lucky. Dumb people have very loud voices in Australia.

Nice thread, Droog. I don't have time right now to write a post as long as yours, but I'll try to have a go at it if I can find a moment (and if the thread hasn't turned into a total flame war yet).
Anyway, what you say about UK can be applied, I think, to most western europe countries for the last decade, give or take a few local variations.
Made me think about that, although this is a different tone :

Re: I can criticise my own country. can you?
Ok, I understand that, however you need to realise that foreigners who live here have eyes and memories and a capability for perception. Sure, we have problems in our home countries - such as those mentioned by Alex - and most foreigners you meet will be able to tell you at length what's wrong with their countries. However, you need to realise that when we live here, we can see China's problems, too. Why pretend to us that they aren't there, that there's no problem, that everything in China's great? We live here too and we aren't blind. Or stupid. Well, most of us aren't.

Re: I can criticise my own country. can you?
I didn't say I was upset with China, but you might want to start your critique with 'we are overly defensive'.
It's merely an exercise to see if people are able to sling sh*t at their own country instead of at others, which is too easy. No deeper meaning than that.

one word "selfcriticism", thats actually two words but I wanted to make the impact.

Re: I can criticise my own country. can you?
come to self criticism, i remember a saying said by zengzi, kongzi's disciple
吾日三省吾身,为人谋而不忠乎?与朋友交而不信乎?传不习乎
i self criticise three time, i am being a good official for my emperor, i am being loyal to my friends, am i being learning the culture heritage

Re: I can criticise my own country. can you?
99% of self criticism from officials is bollocks. Kinda like a half-hearted catholic in a confession booth. Nor does it change anything. Official self criticism is just an insincere, cynical exercise of going through the motions.

Re: I can criticise my own country. can you?
A rather wide interpretation of Confucius. 省 doesn't denote in any case 'critique', more like 'reflection' or 'self-examination'. For a correct translation see: whatever website.
As far as I understand, there's no adequate translation for 'critique' in Chinese. Most of the related words have a negative connotation.
Funny enough you mentioned this citation of Kongzi: 为人谋而不忠乎, which denies you any criticism from the start.

The United States
1. We traded individual freedoms for access to cheap credit to buy mobile phones, jet skies, and massive Mc Mansions in the suburbs.
2. The all you can eat buffet. For the price of a regular meal, you can gorge your self on low quality food. The all you can eat buffet has some to epitomize american consumer culture.
3. Music. Holy Fu*k. Look at this years grammy winners. These acts make me want to rip out my eye balls and stuff them in my ears just to stop the pain.
4. WWJD bracelets and mega churches
5. NASCAR Dads
6. Myspace guidos
7. The cult of celebrity, and how the average american chases it like a rabid pitbull going after a neighbors child.
8. cobrasnake.com, when did this sh*t become the pinnacle of cool?
9. Dubs. I heard my mother actually use the term spinners. Guess what guy's it is no longer cool to put 22inch rims on your leased escalade.
