China Hospital Nightmare!

Three days ago i was in the bathroom cleaning the floor when i slipped and somehow karate-chopped the toilet tank - which was destroyed- and cut my right arm to the bone. blood was gushing out everywhere! i wrapped a t-shirt 'round my arm and went to the nearest hospital on foot which happened to be right next to the apartment complex where i live!

i went to the emergency room and they told me they couldn't help me and told me to go to another hospital not so far away. i took a cab there.

that hospital was too busy to help so they sent me to another one. again i went by taxi. at this point my arm and jeans were covered in blood.

at the third hospital they wouldn't help me unless i fronted up with 2500rmb for the operation (i didn't have it on me at the time), and- even though a friend was on the way with cash- they wouldn't do anything. so, pissed off, i went back to the second hospital. finally they recommended a good hospital and i went there by taxi again.

paid 4000 in total for the op and hospital stay.

25 stitches:

initially ended up in a room with another patient. 30rmb a day. it was like a bus station!! people coming in/out all day, talking loudly.. even actually spitting on the floor and rubbing it in with their feet! i asked about private room and got this one for 100rmb a day:

much better.
anyway, the fourth hospital did a decent job i guess... went in thursday, came out today.
will have a cast for about 3 weeks more.
i am typing this very slowly with my left hand.........

I guess the first couple of hospitals didn't have the specialist equipment to shave off your laowai arm-hair.

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

dont hurt urself in china.
yes,that is chinese hospital.

last summer when i was cooking, i cut my finger tip by accident. so i have to went to emergency room, i bleed a lot, but instead of heal my finger, i had to pay money first and went to another window and stand in line to get my medicine, after 20min, finally the doctor started do sth for me.
and it cost 1200rmb!

btw if ur elbow got hurts, dont waste ur time and money go to hospital, cause when u told doctor "doctor, i cant move my arm ,it hurts a lot,is that ok, what should i do?" then the doctor may answer u "well, then dont do it! " D Oh

That's pretty much it. A couple months back I was home in New Zealand and I was briefly hospitalised. Checking out I asked about the bill. They looked at me funnily. "What bill??" they asked.
I'd forgotten that N.Z. hospitals are completely free!

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

that'll be a cool scar

gotta make up a cover story though

karate chopping a toilet in China will not impress the chicks (nor the grandchildren)

Perhaps you could tell people you rescued an infant girl that had been abandoned in the first floor of the burning CCTV tower by ramming your arm through one of the glass panels

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

Wow, that sounded like nightmare! I agree with the post that said don't get hurt. Anyway, you should have went to SOS International in Chaoyang. I got strep throat the first month I was here, it was really bad, maybe from the loogy Olympics always going on in the streets. So I went to SOS International, very nice setting, very Western type treatment, and though a little expensive it is your body, come on, money is not really an issue in that regard. There was no floor spitting or anything like that. If you come from U.S. or Canada or England I suppose you maybe have a credit card? I used my credit card and had no problems. I guess you will have to switch to your left hand for awhile until your right heals or go get a good oil massage! =-)

Initial idea was "shark attack," but I'll have to think of a good back-story.
"CCTV tower rescue" is a good one...... =D>

I live on the complete opposite side of Beijing so no chance to go to any Western hospitals. No credit card either, had bad debt experience years ago and swore off them. Sad

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

The 'army/government' hospitals are even worse. They had one of the filthiest bathrooms I've seen in Beijing.

It's crazy to see people with blood gushing out having to get in line for everything..cashier, medicine, supplies, bandages, IVs and then have to carry and hold all the crap while waiting in the halls. If you don't have money you're fooked.

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

Do you live in Haidian? What are those good and bad hospitals you went to? I'd love to know just in case I get hurt. I often think about it and don't know where will I go if I get hurt...

Thanks man, and recover soon!

301 at Wukesong is good but often busy.. however the medical staff in the emergency ward usually give preference to foreigners, some speak good English. I was just unlucky that day that there were worse cases ahead of me..

302 seems to be totally useless unless you have aids, hmm.

The worst one was the qing hua university one. dirty and doctors who won't do anything until they get paid. when I was there a family was crying their eyes out because someone had obviously died... never go there!!

I ended up at some military one actually- maybe one of the few okay ones tefl-dave- and the doctors were good. definitely request a private room though!

Anyway, any trouble go to 301 emergency and act foreign, haha, they'll take care of you

(I had a couple of incidents with asthma in the past and 301 really helped)

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

Christ, what does that doctor do for a day job? Repair fishing nets? Yikes.

Glad you're OK. That's a refresher on why you should hop on a plane if you have any serious medical problem in this sh*t hole. The hospitals and medical facilities here (unless you're a government crony) are VERY third world. It would be even worse if you were 50 klicks outside of a major city.

I went to visit a friend who was having a baby last year and there were literally people bleeding in the hallways while they were sorting out their cash. Sad.

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

Funny to see this post as I just got back for the small hospital located inside Beihang U. Earlier had gone to #3 Hospital (Peking U affiliate) becasue it was supposed to be so good and was underwhelmed.... Left there and tried plan B.

Anyway, I was impressed by the good service and low fees. As a Beihang 'insider' I got 20% off the normal fees - with IV meds and some oral meds (for a bad cold, touch of pneumonia and and ear infection) - chest x-ray, blood test, & consult with ear/nose/throat doc along with internal medicine doc's initial exam - the whole deal including treatment was done in under 2 hours and for less than 120 RMB.

I also found a dental office in the CBD that does western quality work for 20% of the cost and have been treated so well there.

The pre-pay thing is a problem that must be addressed, and emergency medical services are probably not as good as others. In general, my experiences have NOT been western-style, but, IMHO, not so bad.

YMMV!

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

i was in the sino japanese hospital recently in the foreigner department. i trust them with treatment most of the time (there was a separate incident where the doctor aksed me to read the literature for a vaccine before she administred, that rattled me a bit) but not so much for money. they started talking about the treatment being 15,000 when in the end i only paid just over 2,000. they were also trying to get me to stay over night when i didn't need to.

i hate hospital stays, i mean no one likes them but i have a hospital phobia or something. brings back those days in nam.

i was suffering pretty bad and i got the impression they were holding on giving me the meds i needed, seeing if they could juice me for more money, could be wrong though. i would say sino japanes hospital is good aslong as you are firm with them about the money. if they know you have insurance they will go to town on you and that could leave you temporarily out of pocket.

they have comfy seats and oil paintings and pretty nurses, the
service is mostly western just watch for the foreigner tax.i would recommend it if you cant afford the sos hospital or your insurance doesn;t cover your malady, as mine didn't.

the horror, the pain, and the alphabet

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

I want to see what the toilet looks like.
really thats one hell of a cut.
those are staples right.
if not those are the biggest stitches i have
ever seen. they probably had to go deep with them,
hope it heals quick for you.
I will hire a made to clean my bathroom
from now on. Never knew a toilet could be that violent..
get well.fast.

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

When I was in Taipei, I got burned really bad by my hot water heater. It was 2 am and I went to the hostpital by my house. While on the way I was nervous and left my wallet in the car. I had no money and no health insurance card (in Taiwan all foreigners that work there are required to buy the national health insurance) So I went in the hospital anyway. I waited for 30 minutes, because someone in a motorcycle accident came in. And then I saw the doctor and he prescribed me medicine and they gave it to me right there. They told me to write down my address and phone number and I can pay later. The bill including medicine was 1100 NTD or about 300 RMB. Stories like that just make me want to say 中華民國萬歲!

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

Wow, that arm looks very cool. Glad that you are okay. You are lucky that taxis actually picked you up. I've seen some of them turn around and hit the gas to get as far away from ppl who risk bleeding all over their seats.

That's outstanding advice V. The next time I have a sucking chest wound, I'll book some air tickets on C-trip. Should I go 1st class or business?

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

Hospitals here are a f-ing nightmare. I just went to one this weekend. At least my girfriend got to see how those of us who don't have Bupa and can't afford SOS have to live.

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

I had a strange growth on my thumb a couple years back - like a wart or blister gone horribly wrong. When I went to the hospital I was told, after a very brief glance at the growth, that it was a malignant tumor and that I should seriously consider returning to my home country for treatment. Persevering I sought out a second opinion at another hospital, was prescribed an antibiotic cream salve, which subsequently healed the growth (more like dried it up...it fell off of it's own accord a couple weeks later).

Chinese hospitals can be an adventure during times when you're least up for one.

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

Hey, it could be worse. They could have charged you a cleaning fee for having spilled blood all over their waiting hall.

I went to a chinese hospital in shanghai once for a wart. Doctor reached for his scalpel before I had time to process what shoushu meant.
All in all it went pretty well and the doctor was quite friendly. Though I did find it odd that I had to go downstairs and buy the anesthesia myself before the operation. And it took about 2 hours total, though that was mostly due to my confusion and inexperience.

After your story, I'll be sure to go to a foreign hospital for anything serious!

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

the latter. my first stitches too!

taxis: i kept the bleeding to a minimum by wrapping a hard rock t-shirt around my arm (they ARE useful!) and trying to keep most of what came out on me & not the taxi. actually not a single driver seemed to notice.

Remmy, I suggest a huge dose of a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

uh, i'm on some sorta anti-infection pills. had 3 days worth of IVs while in hospital (they seem to prescribe IVs for everything under the sun; that and "drink lots of hot water").
that was 1500rmb +.

no pain-killers.

is it a good idea to drink jiu under these circumstances?

EDIT: i don't know exactly what the IVs were but a couple of bottles said sodium chloride. that's salt. how effective is salt water?

Re: China Hospital Nightmare!

yep, you did some bleeding for sure.
I hope it never happens to you again.
you probably know this already,
keep a jar of vasaline in the house
for such an accident like that.
you can jam the vasaline in the cut
then rap it.This will really slow
blood loss.
The stitching ,
really looks like some frankenstien stuff.
well if all goes well you will be playing
the guitar soon.
speedy recovery to ya.
saline solution is for rehydration, it's
possible they added antibiotics to it.
hopefully they did.
