Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

Clearly no. It seems only owners/workers of said restaurant ever give it 5 stars.

Oh, I won restaurant vouchers, woo hoo! Thanks!

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

Is that a serious question?

I was operating under the assumption this had nothing to do with Micheline stars and was merely a scale for rating Beijing's restaurants based on the amateur advice and opinions of patrons.

Is Bocata a 5 star restaurant? No. But it serves arguably the best sandwiches in town and has a great outdoor seating courtyard, so on the TBJ scale of restaurant reviews it deserves 5 out of 5 stars, points, horseshoes, hermit crabs, or whatever the rating system is.

If you keep taking yourself and your website too seriously, people are going to make fun of you, admin.

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

I wonder where BeijingRob/Beerojuana went?

PS Michelin's star rating system only goes to 3.

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

Yeah, on january 10th he just seemed to disappear off the internet.

I hope he's ok and not buried underneath some new road.

He was my huckleberry

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

Well, if it's just a matter of him completely losing his mind and being a total f***wad freakboy, perhaps he'll come around

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

This whole restaurant rating system is completely flawed.
If there are 39 five star rated places rated by 1-2 people can you really compare it to a 3 or 4 star rated place that has 20-50 ratings?

Furthermore, in many surveys, KFC is rated one of the best restaurants and dining experiences among Chinese in China. Is someone qualified to critique a Thai, Vietnamese, or even a Burger joint if they never ate that food, and have no frame of reference?

I am not into travelers guide ratings, but at least the consumer is under the impression that someone qualified is rating these places.

Does someone really care what a Chinese Mainlander’s impression are on these places? Chinese bakeries use the least possible amount of sugar in their pastries (but Chinese Whitbread seem to have more sugar than a Halloween bag of Pixie sticks). From my experience, I have heard nothing but complaints from Mainlanders whether they are in a French bakery in China, or an Italian bakery in NY that everything is too sweet. Hell, they complain that imported fruit is too sweet too.

BTW, HK and Taiwan people don’t seem to complain about sugar like Mainlanders.

I hope so. It would be a shame if he'd undergone some Lawrence-esque transformation. I'm sure he'll see sense though.

Beerojuana is working to perfect the Texanan chili recipe, or so I've heard...and something about socializing with Swiss *bleeps*...whatever that means...

my post is to hopefully stimulate people to cast their opinions on these places so we can reach that 20-50 ratings level ... going to take a while

tefl-dan reviews Luga's Villa

My Korean friend shows up and orders a burrito...however, 5 small enchiladas arrive...more confusion. It's not what he expected either. He tries to explain what a burrito looks like to the the waiter. No luck. We call Luga over and he explains he is trying to make things different than his other restaurant....

tefl-dan has won a voucher to eat at Mughal's valued ar RMB 200.

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

Admin,

I have seen the ratings to Outback steakhouse on that other site. Those with English names give it descent ratings while those with Chinese names give it bad ratings; though they all rate the food as good-superior.

To a Mainlander, there is no justification to pay 400-1000 RMB for a steak, while a foreigner would never pay 2000 RMB for a sea-cucumber or some shark fin soup without feeling extorted.

A lot of foreign restaurants have been deemed "over-priced" by locals. The same people would never complain that a bowl that looks and taste like a bumpy turd in it is priced at 2000 RMB ! In fact, the inflated price more likely to impress them.

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

Chinese don't know anything about food. They can't appreciate or even detect subtle and layered flavors.

Riddle me this:

Why are shark fin and bird nest so popular among Chinese? They are flavorless and worthless as food items.

It's ok, if you like fish and chips. But the fish is pretty flavorless. Sorry flavourless.

Those aren't chips. They are French Fries which is Belgium food. Chips are just greasy round slices of fried potatoes.

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

Count Zero's review of Let's Burger is the best one so far.

Chinese people should be prohibited from offering restaurant reviews as they only end up confusing the situation.

"I like it, have nice taste and atmosphere."

Re: Beijing's 5-Star Restaurants

Your point?

I agree with Herojuana, I am not qualified to rate certain types of Chinese food, so I DON'T. Can we have a button identifying what nationality is recommending a place?

Is a North Korean qualifies to rate an Italian restaurant? Is someone who never left their province able to seriously rate international cuisine?

Do you see the garbage Pizza Hut puts on its Chinese pizzas; does going there a few times with a handful of Chinese coupons really make a local a Italian cuisine expert?
