How would living and teaching English in China compare to Japan?
I could live by the ocean and surf and watch Pride live.
I am seriously considering it.
I am growing tired of the over patriotic attitudes with the young male students here (uni). I guess Jap students would be less polite and more naughty. Maybe I could find an all girls school.
Anyone taught English there?

I suppose I would just get there and go,
"f***, things are too expensive!"
But then I could write another book, The Fake Celebrity In Japan.

Re: How would living and teaching English in China compare ...
I've heard the Japanese are more racist than the Chinese. They're just not so upfront about it.
But most of the japanese I've met/taught have been great.
Go for it.

Everything is almost exactly the same as here (student-wise), except the cost of living is 10 times higher.

But aren't your wages way higher too? Plus you can eat authentic suhi and sashimi everyday ^^ And if you are lucky enough, you might meet some AV stars in person, at the streets of shibuya XD

Re: How would living and teaching English in China compare ...
Also it should be mentioned that westerners celebrity status is much much lower in Japan. Unless of course you are allready a music, movie, or sports star. I lived in Japan for about 6 months and really enjoyed it. It is very expensive to live there and I hear the English schools are very demanding and well as tougher to get these days. It was also my experience that not many could speak English and the girls are not that impressed by your white face, you better bring much more to the table than that. It would be almost impossible to duplicate your catch of a young up and coming TV personality in Japan as you did in China but the chase could be part of the adventure, I encourage you to go give it a look!

Re: How would living and teaching English in China compare ...
There are certain pressures of living in Japan. It's not as laid back as in China.
That guy bragging about his 176cm gf and a 6000 kuai a month salary probably wouldn't like it there.
It's better to be nice, kind, generous, friendly, helpful, sexy and rich than to be obnoxious, scary, stinky, stingy, lonely and poor.

Re: How would living and teaching English in China compare ...
Average teacher salary is 300,000yen a month. That's 22,300RMB.
You can find an okay apartment for about 50,000yen a month in most cities (not Tokyo)- that's 3,500RMB, about the same as living here- so that leaves you with a fair bit. But the cost of everything else is the same as or even higher than the U.S./U.K.
The food is great, yes. Places like Hatsune may impress those who are comparing it to sushi places in The States etc. but there's nothing like real Japanese sushi. Okonomiyaki (pancake) is something else that is truly amazing and nothing you could try/have ever tried outside Japan is even close.
Whoever said the celebrity factor in Japan is a lot less it right. In smaller cities they'll still point and say "gaijin" ("laowai") but unless you're six feet or taller and blonde-haired/blue-eyed that's not going you get you anywhere.
If you leave a company there'll be another "gaijin" to replace you the next day. Foreigners are a dime a dozen.
If you're there to make money it's a good place I suppose, as long as you don't mind not having a social life.
A night out drinking/clubbing will set you back 50,000-100,000yen easily, especially in places like Roppongi (party district of Tokyo). Yeah, a third of your monthly salary!
A night out at a "karaoke" bar (KTV) could set you back the same, especially if it's a "hostess bar," where the girls sit with you, pour your drinks, laugh at anything you say, and let you feel them up a bit (Robert, you'd love it!).
In short, it's easy to make good money in Japan but just as easy to spend it quickly and have nothing to show for it.
Also, Japanese people can be quite nuts.
They worship murderers (a Japanese cannibal who ate a French student got his own talk show!), cultists (the cult that gassed the Tokyo subway is very popular and even spawned some pop star-esque celebrities) and like to feel women up on the train (ummm.... remedy??). Also, when I was there, child porn was legal. Legal.
What's more, they work themselves to death working for a single company their whole lives or just give up, snap and kill someone, or jump in front of a train.
This is a generalisation, but.......... true on many levels.
I was once on a subway and the train stopped because the train ahead of us had run over a jumper. I was shocked but everyone else on the train got pissed because they were now late.
Oh, if they're not crazy workers or jumpers, they're usually slacker-idiots. They fail/drop out of school, think that life is all about having the right accessories and in some cases end up looking like this:

Re: How would living and teaching English in China compare ...
Japanese prostitution is all run by the yakuza. I kinda used to work for the yakuza (long story) and my boss was a lower level boss in the Yamaguchi-gumi, one of the largest yakuza clans. He imported foreign whores (U.S., Australian etc.) and set them up in one of his nightclubs to attract customers. He paid the girls a basic salary (as a "hostess") and didn't take a cut from the clients- it was just to attract clientelle to the club.
I was the interpreter.
Anyway, if you go to a Japanese whore prepare to be fleeced. They'll charge you something like 50,000yen or more if they feel like it. There are always extra charges- the same applies to the bars/clubs. "Oh, we didn't mention the 10,000yen for the baby oil??"
It's a bit like the "tea house scam" actually.
Except if you give them any trouble about paying a couple of yakuza bouncers will smash the crap out of you and leave you bleeding in an alley.
Professional, yep.

Re: How would living and teaching English in China compare ...
when you and the japanese whore book a room, she will use a basin, put some hot water in it, i don't know what it's used for. Not all prostitute are controled by yakuza, they only paying the protection fee

Sadly Li Ting was long gone a few years back. But you make a good point. I was pretty nailed last night and on a break with my gf of 3 years (give or take).
But luckily for me, as usual, we got back again today.
