HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Hi I'm new in Beijing and I'm italian. I got a Degree in foreign languages and I have a certificate to teach english.
I sent a lot of resume and CV and whenever I received a reply or a job offer for kindergarten or elementary schools they asked me to do a demo class!!!
I failed twice even though I hadn't books or materials to prepare a demo.I found some ideas on Youtube or other internet websites but...
It has become a nightmare for me because I tried to do it but there's something wrong that they don't like!
I used to teach in Italy to teenagers, foreigners and adults without problems. Now in China the demo class is a must and it's possible that I did something wrong.
Who can help me????please give me some suggestions because I'm thinking to come back home!

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Your written English is not very good and you obviously lack self-confidence. Remedy the first and get over the second. If all else fails you might want to bleach your hair and wear lenses. Being rejected twice does not mean you´re doing anything wrong, just that someone else did it better.
If you need a fail-proof gimmick just buy a kitten and take it to class.
Best of luck,
And yeah, my English isn´t perfect either, but I´m not a teacher.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
The demo class ain't that difficult especially for kids. Just be cool and relax, ask lots of questions to your students, have some activities (simple ones)and let them guess facts about you. Hide your identity, tell your students you are Canadian with an italian mother (this will help with the accent), let's be honest, chinese won't like the fact that you ain't no native speaker. For the kids, do magic, play stupid games, be a clown.
More importantly, if you can speak chinese, use it! Not right away but after 5 minutes of your demo class. Bosses will ask you not to use it but believe me, if your students know you can speak chinese (even basic level) they will feel released.
I've had quite some demo classes myself, it always went perfectly well. If for you it went wrong twice in a row then ask yourself this question "Did they really need a teacher"?
Sometimes they'll let you have a demo class just to be polite (especially if you come straight to the school and they didn't know you were Italian). I don't know about your oral but here that's what counts. If the students are adults, don't hesitate to throw in couple idioms, don't make it too easy, it won't do you any good. For kids, make it as dumb as you can, they will love you(I use to bring ballons and a fake nose...).
Overall, be very active, don't let your class fall into coma. Make them laugh, humor works all the time.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

are you white? if not then thats why.
If you are then you probably didn't smile enough or seem friendly enough. perhaps you sounded too italian.
Its often the students in the demo classes that have a big say and the 'entertainment' factor goes a lot further than teaching ability or knowledge of the language.
You don't really need to do anything other than ask them a few questions and grin stupidly.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Don't worry about it too much. The main thing is to make the kids laugh and have a good time in an English environment. With adults it's kind of the same but you got to put a lot on their side of the court so they do most of the speaking in the activities you've prepped. Demo's can be frustrating due to the fact the students attending are the Chinese staff or existing students who aren't used to your style of teaching. Don't let it get you down, there's plenty of teaching gigs out there.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Italians usually have a pretty strong accent. If that is the case with you then you are in a bit of a pickle. Non-native speakers are looked down upon by Chinese parents hence it will be harder for a private language school to attract students as well as keep them in your class. Here in China it is all about the benjamins so if the school suspects you might be trouble they'll axe you and hire someone else.
You say you have a degree in foreign languages? That sounds as if you studied something else than English (if not then I guess you would have written a degree in English). What kind of certificate is it you have to teach ESL?
Anyway you should be able to find work eventually. I know a Russian chick who holds 3 part time jobs teaching English. She can't spell, her grammar is non existant and she's got the thickest accent imaginable. If she can earn a living teaching English here anybody can (Sorry Tatiana,, hope you are not on TheBeijinger)

Sorry, but your English is not good. I am tired of people who hardly speak English saying they are English teachers.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
There you have it. The China market, from my observation, is the business of entertainment. Too many places here offer English learning services and way too many students are required or want to learn it for status advancement. This means that you get a market full of people who would be unemployable 'teachers' in their own countries but are native English speakers. There are good teachers here, without a doubt, but most are delusional or overtly and psychotically protective of their China turf.
In other places, they will normally hire the best person for the job regardless racial background or gender. However, in China, it seems like the only thing that matters is how much your students prefer you and believe they will learn. You have countries all around Asia where English is spoken and some where English is the first language. Why recruit a western speaker? Because this is the business of entertainment and false perception but not acutally learning.
Being born a native English speaker does not qualify you to teach English. However, you can overcome the demo class by understanding that you have all the face value tools to be an English teacher, and I doubt if some of your employers or students will even know that English isn't spoken as often as Italian in Italy...You're European! Point this out every time you're ever challenged in your demo class. My only warning to you is don't get sucked into believing that you're an actual teacher, because if it was just about grammar then they would be recruiting Singaporeans.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Isn't it a bit of an exaggeration to say he "barely speaks english" ?... C'mon. Or did you just read his post in italian ?
I mean, I get your point, many fake teachers out there... but that includes native english speakers who have no other ability than just being a native speaker as well. At least that guy's got a degree.
Owynne
Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Sorry OP. Yes, you are right Nomadz.
It was an exaggeration. But still, I disapprove of native speakers who are not professional in their teaching while claiming to be professional teachers. I know an Italian whose English is Chinglish at best and though he does have a degree in foreign languages, English was not one of the languages he studied. Yet he is an English teacher in China.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Hi, thanks to those who give me some practical advices for the demo class, I'll try to practice and improve.
I know I'm not a native speaker but in China as in Italy it's rare to find a native speaker with some kind of certificate and almost impossible with a Degree in English or Chinese.
I won't be scared by those who write about accent, slang, or other stuffs like that. The majority of italian students who got a degree in foreign languages (english is the first for me) now work abroad without any problem.
One of my best friend has been hired by the mexican embassy and now he teaches english to native spanish speakers, another one teaches russian to the Stanford University and so on.
If chinese people want to learn english following the accent and not the true language that involves writing, reading and speaking I don't understand why they call me and ask about my degree or certificates whenever I do an interview?

You can record yourself on video while doing a pretend demo class and see how you appear to yourself. You could be surprised, and may learn quite a few things there. What you look like (and sound like) to others, and what you think you look like, could be vastly different.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
I think it is hardly about the quality of his (the Italian guy's) English. I have taught English here for a couple years now off and on, what I have learned is that there is a lot of native teachers with MA degress in education, yet they are a-holes that take themselves too seriously, so the kids hate them or find them boring (myself included at times). I think that the Italian guy's English is MUCH better than most of the kids I teach, so I don't see why that would be a problem.
I agree with the posters that say you just need to make it fun. I ususally open with a song, head-shoulders-knees-and-toes, then give them pics i googled the night before of say fruit and veggies. After they repeat the word a couple of times (do you like onions? Onions make me cry, but I love to eat bananas, what animal likes bananas, "Monkey!" Good.--- Like that.) you make 2 teams, so you need two of each pic. then write fruit on one side of the board, and veggies on the other. Describe, then say a fruit or veggie. Two kids have to run to the board, slap it on the right word and say "I like to eat carrots/apples/kiwis/green beans/oranges/mangoes/etc." the fastest kid gets a point for his team. Announce the scores frequently and say "whats going on gang? 4-5, you have four, they have five!" (teach numbers). The winning team gets stickers. One each. Dont let them choose, it'll take all f-ing day.
Another game, really easy and they love it is ABC. Line the kids up, the first one says A 2nd B and so on, if the kid f***s up- stumbles, takes longer than 3 seconds after you point to them, or says the wrong letter, they have to sit down. They are out. If you get through the alphabet do 2 letters, AB, CD, DE, EF, then 3 ABC, DEF, and so on. The winner gets a big sticker because they are the best in the class, and I make the other kids clap for them.
Then have your closer, if you're happy and you know it, if you have never heard this song google it. But make it funny, you are an actor, you are a clown, you are the DUDE. If you're happy and you know it dance the funky chicken, if your happy and you know it do the twist, and remember, the last time you have to do the previous seven, which makes everyone laugh, oh we love so and so teacher so fun is what they are thinking because you left them feeling elated. I had to do this sh*t in classes with 20 kids who loved it, but their 40 parents all just sat there and watched me, as well as five other teachers from the school. Kind of humiliating at first, but realize, they start to really look forward to seeing you, they appreciate the fact that you humble yourself enough to act like a total dipshit.
sooooooooo,
1. Opener- song
2. Substance- vocab building game.
3. Closer-song.
always bring stickers, you can get em at yaxiu market for 2-3rmb/sheet, and this will make your job soooooo much easier, kids love that crap. I also use little erasers.
just try to relax and be fun, be a clown, be humble, be excited, be a guy that you would want to see again if you were a little kid.
Good luck man.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
I tend to side with Owynne on this one, although she may be generalising a bit.
Unless you have really good English, as in no accent or a mild US accent then the odds are stacked against you here I am afraid, and if you are not white and have an accent then you are just being used, forget it, go back home.
Slightly off topic, why do a demo class?
I don't, and in 8 years here never have.
I say sorry no, unless you pay me an hour up front, it is in my resume also.
And I am never short of work.
You guys who go rushing off and give away your time are simply adding to the problem and lowering your professional image.
You must surely know that in most cases the students are paying for your demo so the school basically gets a free teacher. If they can do that a few times a week they are laughing at you and your stupidity.
Same as photo, no I am not supporting euro anti racial values, the hirer has the right, in my mind to decide if she wants white green or black teachers and I accept that, but if what i look like is more important then my creds, then I won't work there.
There is always someone on this site or others complaining about the ESL business in China, yet in many cases they contribute to the problem.
Ok, now that should add some blood to the shark waters!

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
For the company that I am presently employed by, I was required to give a demo class. To make things more challenging, I wasn't giving the demo class to students but to people in suits who I discovered at the end of the class were principals, directors, and supervisors of various language training centers and schools. To add a democratic touch, they all rated me, added their comments and put the matter to a vote. I have never been voted into a school before but at least the vote was unanimous.
Almost all companies and schools I have contacted or been contacted by initially request a photo, CV, and photocopy of my diploma, certificates etc. I thought that was just standard procedure. The company I work for now also required a letter of referral from each previous school I worked for. But for that last request I just gave them contact numbers and names for my previous bosses and asked them to make the calls themselves.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Justin M nailed it! #1 priority is that the kids like you. Especially if you are in a private school where the parents pay for their kids to attend. If the kids don't like you and work gets to the parents then back to the head cheese you are out! I have only been doing it for about two months but I am a natural at it, act silly all day, some will learn English some just stare off into space, but as long as you are energetic and genuine you will always have good paying jobs in China teaching English. You can't be shy, quiet or feel strange acting like an idiot in front of ohters, it is part of the job. You guys ever have someone (adult) walk into the room while you are teaching? You can't get shy, just keep acting silly even if you feel you are acting like an idiot, the kids love it, pretend to fall down, hurt yourself, the kids go crazy if anything bad happens to you, they love that stuff. One kid at my school is really bad, the other Chinese teachers can't stand him either and just want him out of there but he stays because the parents pay. Little bastard calls me waiguoren and even spit on my the other day! I almost rang his neck! That is where I draw the line, lucky I saw him just before spit a big loogey in the Chinese teachers face first so I was prepared for his new habit. Anyone have that kind of stuff happen, where you just have to smile and accept it?

I personally hate demo-classes and i think they're useless for measuring a teacher's ability to teach.
Being silly and "entertaining" won't get you far.
Be sure that you are clear and convinced about your aims and you will have good teacher presence.
I don't know about your accent.
Accents are normally not a problem unless you're going to teach phonetics for a specific English accent/dialect.
If the problem is that your employer wants you took appear white, then don't take the job. The job is not serious and you'll just find it frustrating to work there. Find a teaching job instead.

Re: HELP!!!! How to overcome the demo class shock????!!!!
Being silly and entertaining for kindergarteners and primary school kids will at least get you a job. The best way to teach English is to let your students have fun. This creates students that enjoy school and learning. What more of an aim could you ask for? I guess you could get all wrapped up in this pedagogical approach bs, but these are little kids, they want to have fun. Let them do that by learning. Don't overthink things or you will create a class that is perhaps interesting for you, but not for the students. Learn By Fun.
