Has anyone been to Chengde before? What's the best way to travel to Chengde from Beijing? Train or long-distance bus? How long does it take? About how many days do I need to see the main attractions? Thanks!
The simple answer: it depends !
I went to Chengde - it's really worth it ! A great and highly interesting place !
It depends , on how many temples you want to visit and how intensive.
I tried to plan to go there by train- but you have to stay overnight or for two days to manage the sights.(Think of the hotel costs). So I hired a driver (who contacted me after seeing my post here)- he took us there and back in one day for about 1000- 1100 yuan in a good car. But- as we were 3 people and he did it very well: it was a great trip !!!
Wife and I joined a cheap local tour which I will never do again. Train ride is about 3-4 hours each way, so you should plan to stay the night or your trip will be quite rushed. One night is enough in my opinion. Don't join a tour. Once you get there, you'll see many private cars outside the station offering their services to take you around. Do some research online on the sight you want to visit and then negotiate a price with the drivers - say Rmb 300 for the day. Paying 1100 for a car from Beijing is a good deal too.
There are few trains but many busses. You can find them at DongZhiMen. Busses arrive a little outside Chengde, take at taxi from there. Some busses run to a hotel in the city, so it might be worth asking.
You can also take a train or bus from Tianjin (might be an option if the train schedule is better).
I went to Chengde last October holiday and really enjoyed it. As it was the holiday, I failed to get a train ticket so took the bus from a huge (seemingly new) bus station in the south of Beijing that took me ages to get to from the CBD and that I've now unfortunately forgotten the name of.
However, once I was on the bus I realised we were going past Wangjing, and several people hailed the bus from there and got right on. So I think this is the best way as it's so much easier to get to Wangjing. Buses pass by regularly (every hour) and can be hailed from underneath the Airport Express just north of the junction of Huajiadi Lu and Jiangtai Lu (where Wangjing meets the Lido). The buses are always clearly marked 'Beijing - Chengde' but in Chinese only.
If you don't have heavy luggage you can walk to the centre of Chengde from the bus station; it took me about 20 minutes. I recommend staying two days, one for Bishu Shanzhuang (the Mountain Resort) and one to see some of the lovely temples.
This sounds interesting - I've been itching to do a short road trip. But is there anything else to do there besides visiting temples and scenic hikes? What about the restaurants?
Hi, I would like to find a reliabl and not so much expensive taxi driver to take 2 persons from beijing to Datong (grotto, monastery, dragon wall) in one day, and anothr daily excursion to and from Chengde also during one day. We can get up early so no problem...))) If you have info on the pric or can sugst a driver pls do so. Thank you.
May be you can go there by train, it starts at about 7o'clock and arrives Chengde at noon. There is a lot time to search your hotel to rest. If you arrange you time appropriate, it spends three days to visit.

Take the train - 4 hours. A long distance bus is about the same but it's more expensive.
Two days should be plenty to see all the places of interest.
