British English Teacher
I'm a British Student, currently studying and living in London. I want to go and further my mandarin in Beijing and figure that teaching English would be a good idea, since i'd be able to stay out there longer with the money I make. I've lived in England all my life so my English is pretty good, but i've never gone to China to teach English before. I will be able to go out there from the beginning of June til the end of September, so its bout 4 months. Anyone that could give me some advice on any of the following or anything you see fit:
Visa/Work Visa
Schools that are hiring
Would it be better to go out there first and get a bunch of part time jobs or try for a full-time job?
Salary i should be aiming for and amount of hours I need to work for that
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
J

Re: British English Teacher
Have you ever lived in China before Jeff, because if not, you might be in for a surprise...A rude, painful surprise!
You're quest to land an English teaching job will be extremely difficult, because you seem to be Asain... English teaching is an entertainment business here, and it doesn't matter how great you are as a person or a teacher Jeff, once those parents and students take one look at you they will say, "I don't want a Chinese guy teaching us English"
It's not impossible for you to get a good teaching job here, but it's very unlikely. How unlikely? Think, "When pigs fly..."
The second part, Jeff. You're BBC? or you moved there when you were very young, right? Prepare yourself for people who simply won't understand why you're a Chinese guy and you don't speak fluent Chinese. You will probably be asked if you're really Japanese or Korean, or Singaporean a few times...Also, you're faking it! You can speak Chinese but you're pretending that you only know English because you're trying to seem cool..
Yea, I know, when did speaking English ever make a person automatically cool? Good luck to you though, if it's something you want to do, then go for it!
You should probably enter the country on an L visa and then pay a visa agent to change it to a 6-month F visa. Even better, find a job that will give sponsor your Z visa before you arrive.

I can just see you turning up for the job interview.
"What? You said you were British...?"
"I am British man. My English pretty good."
"Get the f*** out of here."

Re: British English Teacher
No, rearry, I am from British!

Also, sorry Jeff but you're really asking for it here, based on your photo, I think you've got a touch of Down's.

Re: British English Teacher
with your Vietnamese face, and your name, I am sorry man you won't get anything here, oops! I mean your Chinese face. why?? im glad you ask; try to picture, a Chinese-face with a British Accent, or even worse a Chinese face with a Scottish accent.
Good luck though!

Re: British English Teacher
Hey, and don't get angry at us for pointing that out.
It's your own race that is racist against you.
That, combined with your initial display of sub-par English, leaves you scraping the bottom of the job barrel.

Re: British English Teacher
Well mate, my English is just as good as yours you ignorant pricks. Just because I'm not uptight have to write everything in full like this over the Internet.
And yes, I was born in Britain. And I have been to China, and I know the mentality hence my reason to learn Mandarin.
Furthermore I know it's not going to be easy to go teach English in China with an Oriental face, so that's why I'm asking for advice. But I guess advice like that is beyond you longdongsilver. No profile picture? I wonder who has the Down's?

Re: British English Teacher
Look I care less about English teachers, I am not one.
Oriental is a offensive term in my country, its like the word N!gger. Not that I really care, I just wanted to work the word N!gger in another post.
Aside from that I am American. I want some proof of your England claims.
So, how crooked are your teeth, and how many cm is the gap between your front teeth?

Re: British English Teacher
Sadly, you're unlikely to find a decent job teaching English. Most schools would sooner hire a caucasian even if English is their second or third language. I've seen Eastern European "English teachers" who probably couldn't get through an episode of Teletubbies without a translator, but they're making decent coin (at least enough to piss away their brain cells in SanLiTun nightly). A friend of mine is a Chinese American who was born in the US and had a Masters from Harvard...nobody wanted to hire him as a teacher, even though he had degrees in education and linguistics. Go figure.
Good luck.

Re: British English Teacher
Man, you guys are mean as hell. The dude just wants to find an English teaching job. It's true, an Asian guy might have trouble here, but come on man, the guy was only asking for advice, no need to be totally mean unless he deserves it. Calling the dude names and being cruel for no reason is pretty messed up.
It's true though, might as well forget about getting a job in China with a Chinese face, but no reason to be rude about it. The dude is trying to get a job, that's all

I never said you looked like fit bird.
Seriously though, I know plenty of ABCs and BBCs that found decent gigs as teachers. One girl I know is a BBC from London, and she's a DoS here, but she's an adult, whereas you look rather young and inexperienced which will also go against you.
Holaboo, where are those photos of you and Jackie Chan?

Re: British English Teacher
Hi, here my suggestions:
1 if you are a british citizen, the first thing you need to do is to get a chinese visa, tourist visa is easy to get, but only can let you stay in China for 1 month. If you want to do a business visa, you need to have a business invitation letter;
2 you don't need to decide what kind of job you need, actually it is up the employer. you can do a part time job first, and if there is any chance later, you can get a full time job, if the employer is good enough, they can help you get a working visa, which can allow you stay in china for a whole year.
3 now the government policy is strict, all the foreigners now iin China without working visa, only can stay in China to September 15.
hope these information can help you.

Re: British English Teacher
In the part of America I am from Oriental is not a bad word. We have other words that are equal to the n word.
If you're going to be two-faced, at least make one of them good looking.

Re: British English Teacher
theres a good and bad side to having an asian face in china
finding a legitimate job = hard as fck especially teaching english.
Heres one way to do it:
do it grassroot style-
you go door to door handing + handing out flyers or business cards at your gongyu. important to meet face to face and also have some chinese phrases ready for selling
differentiate your self -
"british english" - sell it as the premium form of english.
have a course plan and english material ready
I am assuming you speak a little chinese - sell our ability to explain some stuff in chinese.
classes:
sell 1 to 1 classes (at around 100rmb; u need to undercut the usual crowd)
sell 5 person class (same level - best to elementry crowd at 30 rmb per head). This can be hard as parents love to come and see how you teach
I did somethign similiar when I was a student here...but i got lazy and didn't go through with it. It worked quite reasonably
and i am assuming it would work quite well if i continue to market the whole building.
As for visa - just fly w/ student visa via a cheap chinese school. - usually around 2-4k per half year.
living cost: find a cheap place to stay for around 1-2k - share w/ someone
best of luck to you
beijing is an awesome place

Re: British English Teacher
Well, that part of American you are from, obviously has no Asians!
In parts of Alaska, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, and Idaho, N!GGER is not an offense word since there are little-to-No Black people.

Re: British English Teacher
good side: since you look Asian, they'll no doubt take you for a Chinese (all Asians look Chinese, right?), and this is good news because Chinese-looking foreigners are better able to understand China (makes perfect sense right?). Before you know it, you'll be fully accepted (well, almost), so this is good. Yet sadly, your chances of landing a teaching gig here are gonna be about as good as that of an inbred drunken Canadian guy successfully passing on the swine flu to a pen full of hogs by fondling and rolling around with em (OK, maybe some mouth to mouth too). Hey, maybe there is a chance for you after all.
bad side: you'll be required to join a spur of the moment anti-Japanese outburst directed at a sushi restaurant (doesn't matter if it's Chinese owned) and at Japanese cars (again, doesn't matter if they're Chinese owned).
In closing, I agree with the carrot-gnawing rodent that Beijing is an awesome place, unless of course you're a Mexican tourist.
Dude, gotta love the fog too.
