Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

How good/bad was it and how was the plane? I assume they don't have monitors in the seats, but how was the food, etc.,better than domestic?

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

This question doesn't deserve a response.
You can have a ticket on a United, USAir, Cathay, or 10 other airlines that co-share flights with Air China and when you get to the gate you'll notice you are on a Air China flight. There is nothing you can do about it.

Nothing you can do, but maybe thank god!

There are other USA airlines that co-share flights with China Eastern and China Southern (like Delta, American Airlines, and others)

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

What? I have flown back and forth many times on US carriers and have NEVER just found myself on an a Chinese airline. I don't believe they are code-share flights, but maybe are in a FF plan alliance. If I paid to be on a Cathay Pacific flight to the US and got put on a Air China flight I would definitely have something to say about it. You make it sound like you just buy a ticket and wait and see what airline you are on when you get to the airport. I don't think so.

Ye of Little Faith,
I am right; I have done it more often than you! Call any airlines and ask them- they can't, and won't deny it!
I have paid a lot more to be on ANA or Japan Air flights to see Chinese planes at the gate as well!

That what star alliance, one world, and the other programs do. It got MUCH worse about a year ago when the fuel prices soared and late last year when the economy tanked.

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

I have flown to the USA many times in the past 6 years usually on either United or Continental and not once was my flight on an Air China airplane. They do code share on certain flights but the airplane was always United, Continental, Air Canada, and Northwest etc. And the time I flew ANA it was ANA all the way LAX.

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

Recommend the Continental shuttle flights from China to Newark...good price, decent food, and all the crap movies and 2 episode sitcoms you can watch in 16+ hours.

Bench 400 or die trying.

UFC's right. I also happened to buy a ticket from American Airlines but ended-up in a Chinese plane (NYC-BJ). You can't control it, that's just the way it is and it's logical anyways. Think about it, these planes coming from China, they have to go back there at some point... .

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

I know about code-sharing flights, but you can tell who is actually operating the flight from the flight code. Also when you book the tickets it will say who the actual carrier is. And if you are flying on a certain airline, don't you need to check in with that airline, not the one who sold you the ticket? I have never heard of checking in at the United counter and then getting on an Air China plane.

Yeah, I've flown this one also, better than United but it's running about $1800 right now. I can get an Air China into JFK for about $1500 or a Cathay Pacific transiting thu Hong Kong for $1200.

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is also in the Star Alliance and I LOVE it. When I want to book a ticket to China and return and I call SAS they quote me at around 2000 dollars but when I book through AirChina it's half price. Same nice Airbus with personal tv, same food, same seats. Just 1000 bucks saved,, I am not going to complain about that.

Air China sucks wherever they fly to.

Hey, it's Chinese.

Even Cathay isn't as good now.

Well, I've never had to complain, I never crashed ^_^ (ok -10 for the lame joke). The only bad thing was the food, but It's always problem. (this and the shitty earphones with only one ear working).

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

Ya I hate that when the one ear-phone is out.

I just flew Cathay, HK to Auckland.

Not only was the one earphone out so I had to take the vacant one next to me but the whole f-ing entertainment system went down about 6 hours into the trip.

No movies, no music.

Nice 1, welcome to the new HK.

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

my brother flew air china between LAX-PEK. he said it was ok. i've never flown air china on international routes. i have mixed feeling about their domestic routes. some of their plane's seats are just too compact. depends on the aircraft.

united blows!!! but it has convenient routes. continental is better. last time i flew american they were charging for cocktails and beers from NRT to LAX. WTF???

i always try to fly japan airlines or korean. i nice break in tokyo or seoul is ok with me. i like their service.

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

I flew out of NY on Air China to Beijing, not bad at all. I could tell very little difference in that and the NWA flight I flew to the US on. The plane was older but clean, I had an exit row seat, and the food was basically the same as NWA. There were no in seat monitors just screens throughout the plane, but I don't watch the movies anyway. The worst thing was a screaming baby and a flustered Chinese dad who didn't know what he was doing, but that could happen on any airline. Thank god for the woman in the back of the plane who came up and offered to take the baby for awhile. It calmed down once it had a woman's touch.

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

I bet those Jap hostesses are sexy?

Never flown Jap Air but the Koreans are.

Nice when they bend down right in front of you in the aisle seat, exuding that nice smell, a mixture of old perfume and a poosy that needs washing soon.

Drooling

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

I have no complaints with Air China. Not being a very big airline for a long time, they don't have as many old and smelly planes as many established western carriers, and their flight attendants tend to be much friendlier (and prettier) than most western carriers. In the US, seniority rules for route selection, so the most senior (read: jaded and least patient) flight attendants get the good int'l routes.

The only problems I've had with Air China have been domestic flights being cancelled after 5 hours of sitting around (2x), and every once in a while you'll get stuck to some tacky business guy who tries to cover up the fact that he's spitting in the aisles.

Given price parity, I would likely choose the Chinese carriers over most big American ones these days.

Airlines have more than one flight number for the same flight. CA961 can be the same flight as UA091. Right when you board, the different flight numbers for the various airlines are shown above the boarding gate.

Call Air China or the United Air office in BJ to see for yourself. The same is true for all major carriers in alliance partnerships.

You are right on about the flight attendants for the western carriers. Much older, less pretty, and generally lazy. Trying to get service from them is really a chore.

Re: Anyone flown AirChina to NYC?

air china and any china airline is the pits i only fly them inside china, people spitting and making disgucting noises and the food is cack (some nice stewardesses though). i always fly to Newark on Continental business class (company pays) good airline but i would hate to be in steerage. its always nice to look back with a glass of champers and see the cattle looking like they wish to commit suicide. to Europe always British Airways is ok. american airlines and united are the pits same as air china food is crap and stewardesses should book two seats before boarding

CA6501-CA6600 Dragonair
CA3601-CA3610 Air Macau
etc.

Other airlines operate the same way. This is to allow people who want to fly AirChina (or others)to accumulate miles but have access to more destinations. The carrier is known as the marketing airline, the other is the operating airline.

I beg to differ, comparing metal to metal for the relevant aircraft the age tends to be actually pretty much comparable.

AIR CHINA

Type Qty Age
-------------------------------------
Boeing 747 20 14 years
Boeing 757 13 14.2 years
Boeing 767 10 15.2 years
Boeing 777 10 8.9 years

UNITED

Type Qty Age
-------------------------------------
Boeing 747 27 13.6 years
Boeing 757 97 16.6 years
Boeing 767 35 13.5 years
Boeing 777 52 10.4 years

Regarding cleanliness one only needs to see how anything
chinese looks like after 1 year operation (vehicle,
real estate etc.) Just figure it out.

As for the service I cannot really say much as I do only
fly business or first. It is pretty much comparable. But
regarding the flight attendants I feel much more secure
and confident with seasoned cabin personnel then with
"flying hello kitties" that often aren't even tall enough
to reach the baggage bins. I would not like to have to
live through any kind of emergency with those AC bimbos
no matter how pretty they may look.

As for the service at check-in or otherwise flight planing
related issues (e.g. for frequent flyers issues) air china
is just that AIR CHINA... Buereaucracy and inefficiency wherever you look.

The only chinese airline I would ever recommend is Cathay Pacific.

smells like... Victory.

Now find ANY US airlines that will openly tell the flights that are operated by a Chinese, or other non western country carrier- you can't. Non of them will publish that on their sites because it would cause people to refrain from purchasing international tickets!

hmm ... maybe Tibet

you are WRONG, at least at UNITED's web page you can see who operates the metal right before purchase or afterwards cuz it is normally printed on the itinerary part of the ticket.

The age of a plane is really a non-issue. America civilian aircrafts are taken completely apart, bolt by bolt after every 5-7 years (depending on a mileage/age ratio). There are DC-9’s and DC-10’s that have been in service for over 40 years in operation with carriers like American Airlines.
The problem is most of the service is provided in-house via the airlines & Boeing or Airbus certified techs. In China, it’s a different story- no FAA oversight, 5 government companies via for these contracts (which are based on region) and as a Boeing employee I happen to know for a fact that the Northern China maintenance company does not always use our products or even products that are made of alloy or composites that are up to specifications.
Most of these produces are European or American specialized companies that won’t and can’t give cash kick-backs to “win” contracts.
