Going home - shipping stuff abroad
Hey all,
My time in China is near an end and I'll be heading home in mid-June. I've done some shopping in China (who hasn't?) and I want to ship some of my stuff home. Mostly it's easily packable stuff like clothes and books, but I'll also have a series of pictures that I got framed over here. The framing is nothing special, but it's neat and it'll cost me a fortune to get it done the same in the UK so I'd like some way to get them back intact.
The largest frames are maybe 60x60cm. What kind of shipping methods do you reccomend for this kind of stuff? I've heard good thigns about renting a crate which you then stick on a ship and pick up from a UK port, takes about 6 months or so but is cheap and reliable. China post doesn't sound a great idea - not had very good experiences with them so far. Fedex etc would blow the budget, as would using excess baggage charges on the airline. Taking a train home seems a bit OTT...
Anyone dealt with any good companies before?
Cheers!

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
Try UPS, cheaper than fedex (but still pretty expensive). If you have a lot of stuff to ship you can ship by sea, seems it's even cheaper now with the global crysis, but it will take more than one month.

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
Shipping by sea is what I've heard about - apparantly you can get big crates from specialist companies. Can anyone point me in the right direction for one of these sea shipping, slow, cheap companies?

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
in any way dont use shipping by sea.
it takes more than 3 months to arrive
as i said
mine is over 3 months and has still not arrived

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
I don't care if it takes 3 months to arrive - I just want it cheap and a guarentee that it will arrive one day
This stuff isn't essential, as soon as I get back to the UK I'll be off to a job in France for 2 months - 2 months is really no hassle.
systemofacagna - any companies you've used before for the sea shipping method?

Here are a couple of links of moving companies:

http://linksmoving.asia/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Item...
There are many and the big moving companies in your home country will also be able to help you. And there is of course China Post (EMS) which I have used to send stuff to Sweden without problems.
Contact them and get a quote. Prepare for about 300 euros per cubic meter inluding everything (packing, door to door service etc).

Any idea how much a ordinary large duffel bag would cost to go back to the States?

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
I used the China post service to sent my stuff to France. I first bought the larger model of China Post box and fill them with up to 17kg (a lot of books for studying). I chose the cheaper way of transportation, by sea; and it took less than the two months announced to be shipped. The boxes arrived in a good shape. There is a fixed fare for the transportation mean, then each supplementary kg adds RMB.

I highly recommend www.sevenseasworldwide.com
I´ve sent all my stuff I couldn´t take on the airplane with them to Germany. The total costs for 60 kg (2 large boxes) were 250 EUR. Their service is very good since it includes the delivery of all the packaging materials needed (even a pen to write on the boxes) three days before they come again to pick-up your boxes. Every time they came to my house they called before - in English. If you call them yourself it is a free toll number. They estimated 10 weeks but the boxes were home at my house within 7 weeks. My boxes included two big porcelain vases and everything arrived well. They also handle customs so you don´t have to worry (just sign the papers that everything is your personal belonging for more than 6 months). At home they delivered the consigment to my former address but I had moved in the meantime (400 kms away). Usually you have to pay a small amount for changing the delivery address but I told them after the arrival note in my father´s mail box. So one day later the boxes arrived by UPS for free at the new address. I was highly satisfied with their service and the speed, and I found the price very reasonable. And the more boxes you send, the cheaper it gets. Just give it a try
Disappointed
Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
@Babala: Are you writing, that if I declare all my shipping goods are my personal belongings and in my hand more than 6 months, than I have not to pay any tax (no Value-added tax, no import tax and soon)????
EDIT: Found it on the German Custom homepage! Sounds great!
women are like tornados, they moan like hell, when they come and take the house, when they leave

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
Yeah, it is easy just like that. You only have to state that you lived there longer than 6 months and that these things are your personal belongings. In this case it is a remove, so no taxes or anything incur. But - of course - you cannot put in the boxes things to declare like cigarettes, parfums or other such items. The paper work is not too much. They deliver the necessary documents with the empty boxes. AND note: This is for shipping to the EU. About other countries I don´t know. But you can read on their site. While being in Beijing other foreigners recommended "seven seas worldwide" to me and it was the best choice.

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
What would the cost be to ship a 20ft container to Wellington in New Zealand and how long would it take?
1/2 a container? What other configurations?

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
Sorry for resurrecting old post but wanted to share experiences with linksmoving which I'm in the middle of using. Don't use them. They'll take their time sending stuff and try to sting you with extra 'customs' and 'biosecurity' charges. I can't wait to see if I actually get all my stuff.

Re: Going home - shipping stuff abroad
If you have few boxes only,no big stuff like furniture, then China Post will be best choice.
If you have furniture and other big stuff, then you have to ship by Ocea.
