Did I just get scammed?

Ok here's the story. Right now I'm in Shanghai, and today at People's Park a lone Chinese girl starts talking to me. She said she's from Suzhou and was visiting for a while. She seemed friendly, and asked what I'd see today, so I said perhaps the Bund, and she said she'd show me there. So we're walking along and she says, the Bund is over that way, but I'm going to drink some tea, do you want to come? I agree and she takes me to this place. As I'm sitting in the fancy tea room I think "uh oh, scam?" but I look at the price on the menu and the tea ranges from 40-50 a cup. The girl says she'll buy one cup, I can buy one cup. OK I think, well 50 kuai isn't so bad.

We share the tea, and as she's going on and on with details, it's pretty obvious she's part of some type of scam, but I can't imagine how I could possibly be forced to pay over 50 if it was clearly printed on the menu. But when it comes time to pay, suddenly I have to pay 100rmb, because we shared the tea, and supposedly it's 50 per person or some sh*t.

I'm pretty sure I got scammed, but at least I didn't have to fork over 2000rmb or something which is what I've read online. I'm so f-ing sick and TIRED of being sucked into paying more than I want :'(

Re: Did I just get scammed?

You made the first mistake - you stopped to talk to a person, on the street, whose taken an interest on "what your up to today" ??!!

Re: Did I just get scammed?

You should have slipped a roofie into the tea, let her drink it, and taken her back to your hotel. That'll f-ing teach her to scam laowai men.

I used to go out and do some turn-the-tables-on-scammers shenanigans. Nothing along the lines of rape, mind, but often hilarious!

Re: Did I just get scammed?

GP, where in Europe are you from? Spain?

Re: Did I just get scammed?

Im not European. I'm Aussie.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

Is that why your English is so bad?

Re: Did I just get scammed?

hahahaaha!

Re: Did I just get scammed?

Funny, I heard the same story from 5 or 6 friends of mine, the same thing happened to them when they first arrived in China. Don't feel so bad, one of my friends had to pay something like 380 kuai.
HOW do men fall for this? And as for the girls, scamming people for tea? sick sick sick...

Re: Did I just get scammed?

People are still falling for this? Would you go with a complete stranger who started talking to you on the street in your own country?

People need to stop thinking with their d***, seriously. I work in wangfujing and get the "excuse me" girls all the time. Sad they are still trapping people.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

Let me get the story straight...

The menu said 50 kuai per cup.
You ordered two cups.
The bill came out to 100.
You are wondering if you were somehow duped.

Did I miss something?

Sometimes I feel it is maybe unbearable always be traditional Chinese girl.

Nah she said I buy one cup, she would buy one cup. We shared both cups. Then at the end I have to pay 100rmb. SHE also paid 100rmb, but I think she works for the teahouse and will just get her money back at the end. So I paid for both cups.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

nevermind.

She also paid 100rmb, but I think she works for the teahouse and they'll of course give her cash back. Something like that. I've been suckered into this sh*t too many times now. But like you said, at least it wasn't much cash. Next time it happens I'm gonna say "hey let's go to Starbucks and McDonalds, order five of the most expensive things on the menu, and you can pay for it 'cause I'm a guest in your oh so beautiful country!"

Re: Did I just get scammed?

those girls they used to say that they dont wanna go to macc and KFc, 味道不好,太多油。before they choose the bar but now adays they used to take tea house with bar. even they used to say that they pay the money , they order the 买单, and they disappeared , even u wait their its just waste of ur times and if u tell those things to the owner , they used to say that u 2 are together. so better pay the bill and go. if u really wanna slap that girl , go next day , catch that bitch who might be with another guy. catch her and slap on her face . no one can do nothing. what me and my friends did before.

Touche.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

Don't worry, your will get used to it and learn it step by step.

First time in China: Same situation to me: Pot tea for 150, sitting on a table 100, small boal of peanuts, 150, coke 50. And after that she asked me to give her some money for shopping because she forgot money at home.haha.

Similar situation: Lady or music bar: You will pay for everything. Entering the room, switch on the KTV, for not ordered fruits, drinks for hell of money, and the best, when you don't take care, they put some empty bottles or glasses of drinks in the room and you have to pay as well. My resume after 30 minutes, one beer, one plate of water melon, three chinese songs in the TV, two girls, no action and fun at all: 1300 RMB
And I was happy to pay after three guys forced me into a seperate room and made it clear to me that I have to pay.

I hate China for this, but finaly it's always your own mistake. Just don't trust anybody who is talking to you and want to have something from you (language exchange, walk, tea, money, asking for way...)

So take care everywhere, you will be cheated for everything! Taxis (fixed prices), markets (real price times 15), street sellers (wrong scales for fruits...), landlords (not real landlords, renovations...), restaurants (booking some more dishes)...

But finaly i love China, have fun!

Re: Did I just get scammed?

The reason these scams keep working (and it seems to work mainly on guys) is the same reason a lot of foreign guys go mental for chinese girls over here. They simply cater to your ego, just like Eddie Murphy says. It might now be what you want to hear but it's true.

They come up with a big smile so you drop your guard and then they tell you all the things you want to hear and before you know what happened they have an iron claw grip on your balls. I've seen it happen a hundred times.

Just remember, EVERYONE has their own agenda. OP should be happy he only had to pay 100.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

For the jaw dropping amount of 14 bucks this guy paid, maybe, just maybe, he simply took a girl out for a cup of tea in a "fancy tea room" but was too f*&^ing cheap to pay for it.

What was your master plan there, Hef? Were you planning on her buying herself a cup of tea, taking a little walk with you and then pulling on the knee pads?

Go back to wacking off in the shower.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

If you're willing to do something stupid and go to a tea house, you deserve to get scammed. Who the hell wants tea anyway? Dump that crap in the ocean. ESPECIALLY Chinese tea.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

He didn't get "scammed". He's just a cheap idiot without a clue.

It would cost almost that much to have two cups of coffee at Starbucks.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

100RMB scams ... OMG

the f*cking economic downturn is *really* taking a toll in china,
WHAT'S NEXT ?!

smells like... Victory.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

By the way, genius, the word is spelled the following way.....IMBECILE!

I guess that makes you one!

Re: Did I just get scammed?

I was in Beijing recently, Wang Fu Jin. Girl asked me about England etc etc and asked if I would like to have tea with her.
She took me to tea house near traffic lights top of shopping street. We went upstairs, she ordered pot of fruit tea, [not even pg tips] then I noticed the tea 100rmb and also the cost of private room 100rmb.
I reminded her she invited me so she could pay the f-ing bill, however i did throw 50rmb at her so she didnt lose complete face. And the tea was sh*t!!! And she was ugly.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

That's a nice story, PJD.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

Funny people are so easy to be scammed. Just go to wangfujing and these girls team up in pairs and always walk up and want to just start talking. They always say the same things, even if it is different girls, they obviously have been trained into what to say. I never go, no matter how good looking they are, and in the wangfujing case they are usually not that good looking anyway, but I always play with them. Just like others said here, turn the tables on them, I always "f" with them, give them some Chinese, then some English, drag them along then just bail on them when I get bored. How about the mother daughter teams waiting outside of resturants? My daughter is so hungry, have you seen those yet? Both usually look plump and fine, not like I am being cruel, I can tell who is really starving or not. Anyway, like it was said above, no girl that is real is going to fall all over you in the street because you are so hot and handsome, come on guys, wake up!

now you're making some sense. You know what, I'll do that next time I'm halloooooooed on the street.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

exactly, but i had an hour to kill so i play the game. for just a few rmb i dont care. its the people who end up in k.t.v getting massaged by 2 girls who are drinking you beer and eating your food who really get ripped off.
if you have to ask the question 'am i being scammed' then you are being scammed!!!
i was in shanghai 4 years ago and went to tea house with my western girlfriend, we paid over 150rmb for pot of tea, no scam just expensive tea!!
just know when to walk away.

Re: Did I just get scammed?

That seems like a fun new twist on Beijing Games. When bored, go hang out on wan-fu-jin and wait for the tea ladies to approach me. Then, when halfway through my cup of tea, excuse myself to the toilet and just bolt.
