You cannot ride on ring roads or Changan Jie. Shanghai probably has some motorcycle rules, too.
Highways should be no problem as far as I know, but I'm basing that on an assumption rather than information. But I have read several blogs about people cruising around China on their motorcycles.
Depends on your plate. If its Jing B, you cant drive inside of 4th ring road. But...well, nobody really cares unless you really want to show off your skills on chang an jie. I would just pretend I didnt see them when there are some cops around. They would do the same thing to me too usually.
I don't go on highways, coz I'm scared of those crazy blind drivers. But I can go to wu dao kou, tong zhou, lido, sanlitun...with no problem.
If you have B plates or some fake plates (Hebei or Inner Mongolian or watever), you can ride outside the 4th ring. And you cannot ride on main ring roads, only on side road. But if you manage to get A plates (Chinese bikes below 250cc, Harley Davidson bought from the official store, BMW or Honda(also official), which cost alooooooooooooooooot)
With A plates u can ride anywhere.
With B plates - outside 4th ring.
Or u can just put a helmet on, put some Hebei plates and ride anywhere...police dont normally stop ppl on motorcycles. Oh and its better if u have license as well, so there will prolly be no problem.
Oh and if you decide to get official plates, prepare your wallet for regular fines mailed to u. Cameras everywhere, and its not possible to ride motorcycle below 60km/h, what's the point of it then.

Ahem, since you challenging my linguistic ability:
1. Vocabulary is not eloquent. The manner in which someone speaks can be eloquent, but their vocabulary cannot. You can say my vocabulary is large, small, vast, limited, etc., but not "eloquent."
2. Generally, in English, the noun "sphincter" would require an article or posessive pronoun. i.e. "your sphincter," or "a sphincter."
3. Additionally, the first letter of your second sentence must be capitalized, as the first letter of all sentences in English must be capitalized.
Now, would you like another cyber-spanking, or will this be satisfactory for today?
1. how one would go about converting a foreign motorcycle license to a chinese one (or worst case, getting a local one)?
2. some good trustworthy places to buy bikes? I'd like to get a small 125cc or 250cc suzuki, honda, or even maybe try one of the chinese brands. places that'll help get the A-plates would be ideal.
I am unable to decide whether you are a puerile adolescent, in the case of many americans this seems to extend way beyond their 40th birthday, or just another lard-arse morbidly obese loser living endlessly in cyberland?
From a cursory look at your pathetic posts you seem to exist lurking out there waiting to pounce with your inane insults or worse still your pointless pontifrications on the world according to "the remedy".
You clearly get off on this sort of thing. Don't you have trouble typing all your 10 to 20 a day posts, your semen encrusted keyboard must be getting a bit sticky by now?
Get this through your jelly-like cerebral matter, I do not give a monkey's toss for you or your half-baked pronouncements.
You see I refuse to have a battle of wits with someone unarmed.
You can't ride below 60kph? That's the point of owning one, right? Haha.
All the restrictions make it sound a less than ideal mode of getting around!
What i meant was - with real plates you have to stick to speed restrictions - below 60km/h in the city. But c'mon, who rides a bike this slow?
To the guy lookin for bike - if you want official stuff - go to dealer...pricy but less risky.
If you want something bigger and/or cheaper(alot cheaper), go to Tianjin...that where all the bikes are...its 30 mins to get there on train and ticket abt 70kuai...fast train.
I was planning to go there soon, but dunno, depends on time....my work is killin me.
Oh...and you better get some basic knowledge about motorcycle parts here....cuz ppl cheat foreigners alot here (for example change some parts from motorcycle to cheap local parts and etc)

I was right about the English lesson, though, wasn't I? Yeah, you know I was. Keep using that thesaurus; you might impress a Chinese. Though, more likely, you'll just confuse them, and irritate the rest of us.

Does anybody have any good information on:
1. how one would go about converting a foreign motorcycle license to a chinese one (or worst case, getting a local one)?

It's funny when people try to use vocabulary they can't spell and don't understand.
You're trying too hard, guy.
Also, you're angry. It's the Internet. Relax.

Re: motorbikes where can you ride them
By the way for the guy looking for a bike, just go to any licensed dealer of Honda, Suzuki, etc.
I bought a brand new Suzuki, and the thing has had no problems other than the occassional flat tire in almost 9,000 km on the road.
Very durable, I've even crashed it 3-4 times, nothing wrong but a bent foot peg.
Cost me 6,500 for the bike and another 1,000 for plates.
It's just a 125 but it can do just over 100 km on the highway.

Re: motorbikes where can you ride them
A licensed dealer will even do your oil changes the first few times if you're not too far away from where you buy it.
