I don't think it's possible. I'm also getting the L through agency downtown. Never heard of this Visa thing at the border, and even it it's true, then at what rate?!

I think sweet_learner is referring to getting an exit stamp and not an entirely new visa.

He/she is clearly referring to an entirely new visa.
As with the others I'd like to hear about the details i.e. cost/fees. I've done the Hong Kong thing tons of times and have found that you pay for convenience through the nose and the best bet is to head into downtown and use an agency or just go to the consulate in Wan Chai by yourself.
What's the point of going from Beijing to almost Hong Kong? If you're down there you might as well enjoy a day or two in the city.

If you have any doubts, or specific questions - call them! There is a phone number of exactly that shop!
Yes, it's a full China visa, L type only. Brits can get it, but pay more. US passports can't.
Opening times do NOT match those of the border, better be there before 14:00
I have used that service myself and I can tell you it's 100% working and legit.
Again, visa regulations and service can change fast, call them, there is limited English.
