Tips on Making Computer Faster

What kinds of things do computer savvy people do to keep their computer in tip top shape? Mine is pretty new and is already showing signs of lagging. Slow start up, boot up times, when I click on a program icon there's a noticeable lag before it actually opens, general unresponsiveness. Ideally I'd like to get the machine running as close to the way it did new as possible.

I'm interested in hearing about programs that clean the sh*t out of your computer, clean up the registry, etc. Freeware suggestions appreciated. But any suggestions welcome.

General tips appreciated as well.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

Personally, I use freeware Windows System Care. It does a good job, and has many functions, which can give you a lot of control over your computer.

It's a good place to start.

Slow start up, boot up?

Try this prog

1. If its a laptop, clean the fan. I had a laptop suddenly lose stacks of speed, couldn't figure it out then unplugged the thing and sucked the fan hole. I rebooted with a lovely black mouthed smile and it worked like a dream.

2. Download, read about and learn to use "hijack this", its a great prog and cuts out all the spyware that spybot leaves on your machine. Spybot has been compromised, it claims to clean but actually leaves even more, even with the updates.

Be careful with this program, it'll be worth it. Hijackthis stops speed eating progs from starting in the background when you boot up. Google anything you are unsure about and make sure you do a system backup when it asks.

3. CTRL - ALT - DEL see what's actually running in the background on your machine, if unsure Google the processes and make sure you check 2 or 3 different opinions on any query.

4. Remove any programs that you don't use often, they might look impressive on your desktop but could be screwing your machine.

5. Use a basic desktop picture .jpg stretched. A .BMP or animation will often eat speed.

6. Check your screen refresh speed, (right click) on desktop (properties - settings - advanced - monitor) try lowering the value a bit, see if it speeds up.

Just some ideas.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

Windows Washer (at least the one you linked to) was a very old program, and they said it was just for cleaning internet history. Is it really useful for speed?

I also tried lowering my screen speed, from 75 to 60, but it hurt my eyes.

Very strange.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

It cleans temps and stuff not required. Go back up to 75 then and try hijack this, chances are the problem is there, everyone is running stuff they don't need.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

don't feed it KFC or Chinese street food.

US&A =/= amerikkka

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

download Ccleaner, delete unnecessary files/software, clear stuff on your desktop, check your storage, anti-virus installed.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

Using vista? Get rid of it and that will help immediately.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

With Computer u mean a windows PC? Propably, as those things only happen under windows. U running Vista or XP?

The programs above are all good.
A short checklist of stuff that clusters your RAM and speed.

1. Check Autostart (not the "StartUp" in your Windows, but a real autostart manager, there is too much crap getting installed) "Revo - Uninstaller" freeware - includes an autostart manager

2. Check "Services" (in Administration Tools); too many crappy services are on auto; put them on manual. Means they only get started up when actually run that application. you can also disable, but than some apps wont be able to start anymore, as some rely on certain services. But u cant do anything wrong with "manual"

3. Get a good uninstaller (like Revo), it cleans out your registry nicely when u uninstall; Windows uninstaller is utter crap. And has some other nice system tools aside

4. Get a registry cleaner, e.g CCleaner

5. A registry defrager is helpful too,

Cleaning up temporary files etc, doesnt really affect this so much. The problem of windows boot time and response time always is directly connected to RAM usage/ cluster, which is affected by stuff running in the background. So
1. Autostart
2. Services
3. Registry
are the places to clean up

u can also try --> Run --> regedit
but this is for advanced users

To monitor all services, apps etc running, get "autoruns" -freeware, and you really gonna see everything eating up your RAM, whereas Taskmanager (ctrl+alt+del) only shows you running processes

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

All right. Thanks all. I'll wade through all this when I get a free afternoon.

Oh yes! VISTA is absolute junk, I bought a new Dell online in Beijing and it came with Vista pre-installed, the machine was practically useless speed wise while Vista asked questions about everything i did, constantly crashed, wouldn't read XP files and drove me up the wall!

The machine ended up with a local computer guy and he had to take everything out before we could get XP in. there was no other way!

dont install too many software....

but now, i think...no uninstall? no vista!!!

dp ninja edit

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

Ordering it without windows might be the best way, the Dell China prices are very good though. The alternative is those computer markets around town but the games they play with switching components on the sly etc, makes it simply a false economy.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

and i've noticed Dell put their products on sale EVERY DAY

Dont Tell Anyone

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

Windows 7 is out in RC/beta version-apparently it eats both XP and Vista. Scheduled release is mid next year.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

Been running Windows 7 (dual boot XP)for couple of months now and it blows all previous crap from Microsoft.
Try going to PCPitstop register and then run the full tests (Overdrive), it will give you a comprehensive report on what exactly going on and what to do do fix it.
It also stores the info online so you can do comparisons tests at a later date on performance issues or you can link to other sites for advice.

Re: Tips on Making Computer Faster

XP is fine for me.
