My mainland friends say it's because they don't want too be mistaken for farmers. My preference is a bit of colour, it looks healthier on Chinese girls.

In china it doesnt matter whether a girl is ugly or not as long as she`s paled skinned she`s deemed to be pretty.Its a joke.

The parasols in the summer and the massive campaign on tv advertizing whitening lotion is enough proof.

Local chicks are dumbfounded to see that white chicks dont flee from the sun and some have tanned skin.They`ve been told Americans are white, blue eyes and blonde.Who are these tanned devils? hehehhe.

There`s no panacea for ignorance.

When I came here it was the first time in my life that I was complimented on being white and was told it is beautiful. My daily experiences in my hometown made me feel that I should be apologizing for being white.
"You white c**t", was a commonly heard and unprovoked phrase growing up.
Basically I don't tan at all, though I wish I did as it would give me slightly less chance of getting skin cancer.

Sometimes the same is different, but mostly, it's the same.

I would cite the continued sales of skin whitening lotions as the overwhelming response to this remark.
I don't condone it, and I think they are crazy, but I also think we can safely say that the perception in China is that the lighter your skin the further you will go in life here.

Sometimes the same is different, but mostly, it's the same.
