Frontiers school offers 1-1 lessons for 75 per hour. Haven't heard anything worth complaining about them.

I've found private tutors to be in the 25 RMB to 125 RMB range. You typically get what you pay for after you filter out the complete nut-jobs.

25 RMB will get you a university student who really just wants to earn a bit of extra cash, have a foreign friend to practice English with, and maybe actually help them learn some Chinese along the way. The 100+ RMB teachers will get you somebody with a Master's or Ph.D. in Chinese teaching or Linguistics and a good 10+ years of experience.

So, the 80-100 range seems to be pretty normal for quality, 30-60 for younger with less experience. I've known people who have made all levels work in their own way.

Good summary!

However, it's not only filtering out the nutjobs, but also the ones, who lie about their education. Many of them never had chinese language training.

I had a girl come over for one lesson, she charged 75 per hour, was not picky if the hour went long and she was very helpful to me. I think you could even bargin her cheaper. She even came to my apartment. Her English was excelent, could explain things very clearly and wrote very clear Chinese characters and pinyin. If you are interested I may give you her number and let you see for yourself. I only saw her once, she did a good job, I am just too lazy.

for group class (4 students) just charge 20/hour~25/hour
all the teachers have at lease 3 years exoerience in Mandarin
teaching.
