Yea I don't know how true that is. Factoring in cost of living I learned that earning only 15000RMB in Beijing I would have the same amount of money leftover after expenses as I did making 60000 USD in NYC. I certainly don't think the average Chinese guy is left with $1000 of spending cash at the end of the month.

Of course $1000 goes a lot further in Beijing than New York. Laowai are throwing 4000 down on just an apartment alone and still living well. I don't think the average Laowai who is actually working fulltime in China is pressed for cash.

I have learned I'm also guilty of being attracted to the Chinese girls most Chinese view as plain. Good news for me, that means they will be grateful someone is giving them attention.
