Mobile Voip in China
Hi guys!
I posted this on Shanghai expat, but thought that you could have an idea on this as well:
----------
I'm a mobile technology newbie, but trying my best to understand. But I need some advices from experimented people.
I will be in Shanghai on Sept 1rst, for at least 12 months. ( so monthly sim card is possible).
I need a new phone, for the fill the following needs:
1) Make VOIP calls. To be connected with the person I love in Europe, without being stuck in front of my laptop and not having to pay crazy international fees for nothing. Alternatively for business also, Having access to a skype, google talk or other. So this is my priority.
2) Be able to use pleco, that I tried and like very much. Windows mobile seems to be the way to go.
3) Gadget features for life: Camera, internet access etc.
So far I was thinking about an HTC touch pro 2. Expensive but with what I need. I can buy one unlocked in uk through amazon for example.
Model HTC Touch Pro2 (T7373)
Network HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)
My problem is: Will I be able to make confortable VOIP calls through a data service? If yes, which one? The Touch pro 2 is 3g WCDMA, is it compatible with the any of the chinese 3g? CDMA2000 or TD-SCDMA?
I read that China Unicom runs 3g on WCDMA, any confirmation? Is it working fine?
I can also wait and get the handset in china. In which case, do you have any recommandation for a handset/mobile plan doing Mobile VOIP in China?
Thank you very much for any insight!

You should try MO-Call - http://www.mo-call.com
They support quite a few mobile phones and have reasonable rates when you make international calls.

Re: Mobile Voip in China
I Have recently purchased a VOIP Beijing number and London number with dwwdid.com. I am testing recieving calls Via Google Talk. On my Laptop I can answer calls fine , but can be noisy sometimes. I have tested a view times using Google talk on my HTC 2 , but everytime the call is dropped after 1 ring. I am looking more into this to find a solution that works . It maybe the restrictions with china mobile .
